  1. I am listening to a podcast called Polytechs (politechs.dev) where the hosts interview Dr E. Bender (Computational Linguistics academic, podcaster and author) to talk about Rhetorical technology (all things #AI in this podcast) and besides the reasoned discussion about #GenAISlop and #LLMs in general, which I found most interesting, I was astounded by the amount of research that is available on AI, #GenAI and artificial general intelligence ( #AGI) wondering how is it that none of this material makes the light of day in our public forum discussion or any #NewsOutlets whatsoever. Made me realize how manipulated we all are to think that #GenAI — or as Dr Bender calls Text Extruding machines — is a revolutionary technology that will answer all of our questions.

Dr Bender also talks about the #Racism and #Eugenics that lies behind the historic antecedents of GenAI and the #TechBros push to sell it to us. The discussion also looked at the idea that GenAI #Hallucinates and proposed other words to better reflect what these machines actually produce (Hint: they certainly do not hallucinate).

I was also very receptive to Dr Bender’s #Definition of AI, she says that it is simply a #MarketingTerm and has nothing to do with #Intelligence (artificial or otherwise). I view #ChatGPT and the likes as stochastic word and part-word ordering machines using statistical engines to parsing large uncurated document repositories in a non-deterministic way.

    Well worth a listen:

  3. Ah, the latest drama: AI is allegedly "killing" the web 🎭🔪. Meanwhile, news outlets are valiantly defending it with the same level of originality as a "war in the Middle East" headline 📰💤. Yes, because clearly, subscribing to newsletters and podcasts is the digital CPR we all needed to save the internet. 🙄💻

  5. Also can anyone share with me any news outlets out of the U.S ? I’ve seen images of people protesting Trumps Presidency but no news outlets are talking about this. #NewsOutlets #ThankYou

  6. FYI: Fascist #Project2025 ghoul #BrendanCarr who is the new #FCC chair, is going after #newsoutlets for...criticizing Trump.

That's what NEWS OUTLETS are supposed to do! CRITICISE GOVERNMENT.

  8. #Republicans Are Already Trying to Grant #Trump Dangerous Powers

    Opinion by #HafizRashid

"House Republicans are trying to push through a bill that would give President-Elect #DonaldTrump powers as president to designate #nonprofit organizations as '#TerroristSupporting' even after it was seemingly defeated earlier this week.

"The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act #HR9495 would allow the secretary of the treasury the ability to revoke any nonprofit organization’s tax-exempt status by branding it with a terrorism label. Earlier this week, the bill failed to receive the necessary two-thirds majority in the House to advance to the Senate.

"But on Monday, the House Rules Committee plans to hold a hearing that could set up a new vote on the bill, which initially had the support of all but one Republican and 52 Democrats. With the GOP only holding a seven seat majority in the chamber, they would need the support of more Democrats to advance the bill, which was introduced to combat #protests against #Israel’s war on #Gaza.

"Under any circumstances, the bill would threaten #FirstAmendment rights to #FreeSpeech, but after Trump’s election last week, there are now fears that the president-elect could use these new powers to crack down on his enemies with little recourse. Many #universities and #NewsOutlets are nonprofit organizations in addition to #activist groups.

"After the bill’s initial failure on Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU] celebrated the rejection of 'new broad and easily abused powers.'

"'The freedom to #dissent without fear of government retribution is a vital part of any well-functioning democracy, and now is not the time to grant the executive branch new powers to investigate and functionally shut down and silence its critics,' said Kia Hamadanchy, senior policy counsel for the ACLU, in a statement.

"Now, the bill could be given a retooling and sent up for a vote again, giving a president who has already threatened to use the #military against his critics even more sweeping powers. The question is if #Democrats will recognize the bill as granting dangerous powers to the presidency, or see it as a chance to clamp down on protesters they have tried to ignore at their peril for the past year.'"

  10. Washington Post decided to not endorse an USA presidential candidate. The timing is very suspicious indeed but I do think that news outlets should remain neutral and let the readers do their own research and come to their own conclusion.

  13. I know I keep hearing #NewsOutlets discussing how "making news is expensive, so ads are how we pay for it" or "we have to gatekeep these critical news articles, with paid subscriptions in order to survive!"

Bullshit. Ronna McDaniels was hired for 300K per year to occasionally show up and talk bullshit to sell right wing ideology.

How about NOT hiring people like that? How about NOT hiring people like Geraldo (Junk journalist, always has been) for 2-300K/annum, and pay, I dunno, a decent 150K to two other quality journalists?

  16. @tchambers
    @Gargron @Raspberry_Pi

Actually, #TexasObserver, and other #newsoutlets, are an important additional factor:

if you are interested in any areas of #MediaOnMastodon (at all), then you should follow that #handle. The more followers a media presence has here, the easier it is to explain the (presently) additional expenditure to their board.
Also, it helps them in their business model and marketing.

  18. @thor
Correct. Over time things will become clearer.

    What we know is.

In Sept 2019 #banks were not trusting each other in the overnight market (#repoMarket). Many credible pundits were waiting for a crash.

Throughout Jan 2020 #newsOutlets (incl. #RT) were almost overhyping #coronavirus. To most viewers it probably seemed a problem for #China. Also after congresspersons were briefed about it, divested from #shares and #realEstate.

The crash wiped out many #passiveInvestor's #pensions.
