#UnitedHealth Group has avoided shareholder resolutions that would have asked investors at an upcoming meeting whether the company should audit how often it denies paying for members’ health care, following an outpouring of public anger last year.
One proposal from a group representing faith-based shareholders asked the Eden Prairie-based health care giant to develop a report on the human and economic toll that stems from limiting or delaying access to health care by #denying #payments via its insurance arm, UnitedHealthcare.
The proposal was withdrawn earlier this month, however, after UnitedHealth Group sought regulatory support for excluding the question from shareholder materials. Proponents said they believe they’ll have a better chance for success by re-submitting next year.

A second proposal sought third-party audits of denials to determine if correspondence with families included #factually #incorrect and #insensitive information. But UnitedHealth Groupsaid investor Chris Mueller missed the deadline for submissions.

Yet another mind-blowing episode from @adamconover's #Factually podcast — this time about the agency and communication abilities of plants.

I really love how Adam is able to explore such complex topics in a way that's both thorough and thoughtful, but also entertaining and engaging. Kudos also to Zoë Schlanger for being such an effective communicator. I'm definitely adding her book to my reading list!

I went from writing this to listening to @taylorlorenz talk to @adamconover on #Factually about #SocialMedia. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't use the opportunity to plug their #Mastodon accounts because talking about the alternatives is a big part of changing the internet landscape.

i think the main issues i have with the latest episode of #factually with adam conover are

1) he assumes the unwashed masses are rubes and easily duped and must be protected by "the elites"
2) he assumes that neural networks are generally incapable of synthesizing data across domains
3) is a human supremacist in the sense that he seems to imbue humanity with a "spooky specialness" in the cosmos making us uniquely capable of "thought"

do agree that large corpos trying to fuck up ai, though.
