Sure, recirculate all you like, but that’s not going to put much of a break on water consumption (Fouling and evaporation alone will see to that). As for energy supplies, does the SA Premier have any idea of the scale these #LLM #GenAISlop hosting datacentres will consume? I guess not.

Bad thing all ‘round IMO. We do need datacentres but those… definitely not. Let’s wait for the financial bubble surrounding all this AISlop Hype bursts before committing to any infrastructure. That would be the sane and logical thing to do. Let’s see how *Bought* our political leaders are on this ….

  5. @tizilogic I’ll take that to be a rhetorical question or a form of sarcasm aimed at the #AISlop industry. I on the other hand can think of many practical uses for such infrastructure, none of which include #LLM #GenAISlop hosting.

PS. It is worth noting that #ComputingInfrastructure has a limited number of years for #ROI (as short as five years) before it is superceded by cheaper, faster, better technology. I cannot see #TechBros achieving anything near the #profits requried to pay for all their *gear* within such a short time frame. They will bleed #cash and #crash before those 5 years are out IMHO — maybe a little longer if financial #markets find other ways to hide the accumulating #debt with some new *derivatives* clever enough to dupe #finance #speculators and the financial #press.

Agreed. I am also uncomfortable about the authority of an #AI toolkit used to detect the use of #LLM #GenAISlop in a written work. To me such procedure lacks authority. I am left wondering if Digital Humanities ( #DH ) can step in to give any such test some academic credibility, We have seen some progress in #DHTools that successfully establish authorship for disputed creative works (text and musical scores). I also did a literature survey in preparation for a thesis I was working towards some years back which showed that #DHTextAnalysis techniques might be rigourous enough to detect more characteristics. Comparison of such characteristics between author and #GenAI produced literary work would be a more emphatic way to demonstrate #AIContent in written works.

  9. In the past five weeks, the #Korean stock market has collapsed, shedding almost 40%, threatening the livelihood of millions of South Koreans. (Source: abc.net.au/news/2026-08-03/kor )

[No AI was used in writing this toot — I’d rather not write at all otherwise]

The use of #GenAISlop machines to determine whether text was provided by #LLM #TextRegurgitatingMachines is a monster of a cyclical process. Like the integrity of police officers overseen by other police officers in another branch of law enforcement. Lawyer oversighted by a professional lawyer body… and so on. #Credibility and #Transparency are unlikely to prevail in such nepotistic circumstances, corruption is everywhere but a step away.

What are #Authors to do? Build a #TrailOfEvidence and unimpeachable record of #Provenance for every work they wish to publish? How are they to do this? Are there non-AI tools to help? This is a really f*^%#d up world the #TechBros are imposing upon us all with their inane #MarketingHype hitting the mark with many incompetant and gullible executives in charge of the #publishingIndustry. (This is all conjecture on my part based on very little but general observations of what LLM GenAI is doing — or not doing — in every field of endeavour).

“Pangram is not infallible. I’ve used it to run some of my newsletters through it, and they came back as 80% AI when I wrote every word myself. This is one of many reasons why I disagree with Substack’s decision to partner with Pangram. Another reason is that once a tool like Pangram is available to the masses, false accusations start flying around, and careers can be ruined. Whether you admit it or not, there is A LOT of jealousy in the publishing world, so it wouldn’t surprise me if someone who disliked author X decided to use Pangram on their work and made the results public. This is not the publishing world I want to live in.” (Read more: AI Accusations and Book Publishing - Kathleen Schmidt, Aug 01, 2026). A blog post on Substack, sry. kathleenschmidt.substack.com )

PS. I wonder how many *airport* books by some of the most successful authors in the *genre* would pass muster if subjected to #Pangram or similar GenAI tool generated analysis? Not many I’d wager. Further, what’s the bet Pangram is itself code produced by a GenAISlop machine. This AI ponzie scheme is just getting wilder and wilder by the day… BOOOMMM !

But, look, there’s no financial bubble at all…

When it bursts, there are going to be global repercussions, govt bail outs (for those “too big to fail” aka #TheRich and famous) and the #NeoLiberal con of #TrickledownEconomics will finally come home to roost as everyone else (but the perpetrators of this folly) will pay, and pay, and pay some more. That’s if we don’t all boil off by then…

Dear Zeus, these are both depressing and desperate times. Desperate for that bubble to burst sooner rather than later.

I wouldn’t trust what any #GenAISlop has to say. Historians have various perspectives on the Menzies’ years and while each of them have reseached the subject matter from primary sources, they still argue slightly different conclusions. How could a #TextRegurgitatingMachine possibly do any of that?

I don’t wish to shoot the messenger here, just the #TechBros marketing hype.

Thank you for making a note that you did use #GenAI to draft your toot, I appreciated it. I would’ve gone to wikipedia myself, at least there is reasonable trust that humans are behind those texts and the references aren’t made up.

We now know there’s no such thing as a “Rogue AI” (more marketing hype, as if we needed more), just #TechBros using #GenAISlop machine to hack into other networks gone too far. When are people (especially #Journalists) going to wake up to this ponzie scheme anyway?

    100%
And, it is all about money. THe #TechBros have conned a lot of money into their #GenAISlop ventures, none of which have delivered the revenue stream they promissed investors. They are fighting each other over the same pool of advertising revenue. To date some have barely made 10% of the revenue they peddled to the markets (others not even that) because they do not charge enough for the use of their product to recoup capital costs, let alone make a profit. If they did charge what is required, they’ve have no market. Furthermore, the billions of dollars invested in their business is the same pool of capital that funds them all, the money is just going around between them, in shares deals and cross-investments, etc. It’s another indication that the deregulated financial markets which lets them trade paper like this is broken and will eventually crash (thank you neoliberalism). It’s not a case of if, but when and I think near term soon.

/Apologies for the tooting so much text about something you already know/

A great example of management drunk on marketing kool aid (the left behind thing is indicative of hard marketing) because that is exactly what is happening with #GenAiSlop (not all AIs are similarly shit). In the case of the AI bandwagon and marketing hype, it is a condition referred to #AIPsychosis (I tooted about that a little while ago) with no known cure but eventual failure.

It is staggering to learn that some of the most remunerated executives fail to apply a smidgen of #criticalthinking and do #DueDiligence before mandating AI useage. So much for the insistence of offering big pay packages to attract ‘the best’.

Dear dog, this world has gone to pot…

  29. An interesting write up from #ABCNews.

The editor-in-chief of Reuters, Alessandra Galloni delivered the 2026 Andrew Olle Media Lecture in Sydney talking about the future of #Journalism while #GenAISlop imposes itself as an alternative way to get news (This is bad).

“AG Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times, lent a very eloquent voice to these fears in a recent speech in Marseille. He warned that tech companies are "hijacking the public square" leading to "a future where a crucial wellspring of a healthy society and a stable democracy — the truth, understanding and accountability provided by original journalism — continues to dry up."

  31. I am listening to a podcast called Polytechs (politechs.dev) where the hosts interview Dr E. Bender (Computational Linguistics academic, podcaster and author) to talk about Rhetorical technology (all things #AI in this podcast) and besides the reasoned discussion about #GenAISlop and #LLMs in general, which I found most interesting, I was astounded by the amount of research that is available on AI, #GenAI and artificial general intelligence ( #AGI) wondering how is it that none of this material makes the light of day in our public forum discussion or any #NewsOutlets whatsoever. Made me realize how manipulated we all are to think that #GenAI — or as Dr Bender calls Text Extruding machines — is a revolutionary technology that will answer all of our questions.

Dr Bender also talks about the #Racism and #Eugenics that lies behind the historic antecedents of GenAI and the #TechBros push to sell it to us. The discussion also looked at the idea that GenAI #Hallucinates and proposed other words to better reflect what these machines actually produce (Hint: they certainly do not hallucinate).

I was also very receptive to Dr Bender’s #Definition of AI, she says that it is simply a #MarketingTerm and has nothing to do with #Intelligence (artificial or otherwise). I view #ChatGPT and the likes as stochastic word and part-word ordering machines using statistical engines to parsing large uncurated document repositories in a non-deterministic way.

    Well worth a listen:

  33. In trying to undersand why the world is going to shit, we have discovered why the upper echelons of corporate management (and large institutional investors) are all in on #LLM-based #GenAISlop applications (#Enshitification personified). They’ve all succumbed to #AIPsychosis, assuredly a neurological condition with built-in #Denialism, with the only known cure being #Insolvency followed by #StockMarketCrash and global #EconomicCollapse.

In parallel, the question that is really bugging me is: why do #RightWing nut jobs keep banging their heads against a wall? Do they suffer from a similar type of neurological impairment? I originally thought they were all motivated to behave like they do because of particular unresolved character flaws that I conflatingly call ‘victimhood’. A self flagellation of the soul. A longing to be confirmed martyrs and pitied as such while raging at the world as the cause of their affliction — the circulatity is staggering. A condition recently appearing to be of epidemic proportion.

    An article in #NewPolitics (Eddy Jokovich) has another explanation from the political perspective: A craving for limelight and a fundamental propensity to be lazy;

“…rather than developing policies for Australia’s actual economic, social and environmental challenges, the Australian right wants to import a prefab Trump–Farage–CPAC culture war that has never borne any electoral fruit in the past. So why do they keep doing it? Because it’s cheaper than developing the serious policy work, it’s far more angry than decent democratic debate, and it’s a lot easier than governing competently.” (NOTE: I have reservations about the claim of electoral ineffectiveness)

Good write up. I enjoyed reading it.
I, like you, will say what I have to say about #GenAISlop but I will not enter into arguments with #AIPsychotics. Instead, I’ll get a dose of #CoryDoctorow @pluralistic and come away smiling and a lot more relaxed. Still, the #AIBubble troubles me somewhat because of the inevitable economic fallout when (not if) it bursts.

    Thanks for the read.

  37. #AIPsychosis is now at plague proportion, and a day of reckoning is coming which will burst the #GenAISlop market and the #StockExchanges with it… what the repurcussions will be, I don’t know, but I don’t need to be an economist to know it will affect as all, and not in a good way. This essay attempts to make sense of the #COEs drunk on #KoolAId:

“This essay is an attempt to describe the bizarre dynamics that are currently at play, as I am in the rare position where my wellbeing is not contingent on paying lip service to madness, and to reassure the people trying to survive amidst all of this [AI Spychosis] that they are not crazy.”

Clearly some people have no idea about the AI landscape or purposefully conflate all AI tools under a single umbrella term to give creds to #LLM-based #GenAISlop ,or as I call them #TextRegurgitatingMachines (there’s nothing intelligent about those) in the same way that ultranationalists deliberately conflate anti-Semitisim with anti-Zionism and anti-Israel.

  43. My Comments to Sinclair Davidson's (IPA) article in Crickey News about the announced AI policy:

"NOT ALL AIs are GenAI CHATBOTS.
There is an erroneous tendency, in our news outlets, to lump all coded AI systems under the single "AI" label which not only confuses the issues and problems to be delt with, but also fail to inform the public (voters and consumers) on the different software applications and their requirements. Most of this conflation is quite obviously deliberate and only serves the interests of the 'overvalued' stock holders in LLM-based General Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems -- I call these software apps 'text regurgitating machines" making full use of the GIGO paradigm.

So much marketing hype has been unleashed on the world by a congery of dubious tech speculators that, combined with their propensity to champion a debunked (2008) Neoliberal economic system, are set to impose their ponzie scheme on the gullible and the unprepared to pocket the profits -- at least until their bubble bursts. LLMs (Large Language Models) and their requirement for mega-sized storage and computing power (datacentres) are surreptitiously riding the technology wave of other, very useful, tightly curated LLMs used by task specific AI applications which do not require the massive storage and computing hardware that most news outlest is talking about -- including your article.

The fourth Estate has a social licence to inform society, but ought not to parot the propaganda lies of wealthy individuals set to pillage and rape the world for their own self interests. At the very least, Crickey ought to require clarity in its published material, and in this case, ensure that clear differences between various AI systems are identified before selecting one of them to report or comment on.

I am an avid supporter of independent news and its mission to decorticate all issues of public interest."

Can't expect much else from the IPA.

“Australian writers, musicians, artists and journalists will always have ownership and control of their work.

Our laws will spell that out, plain as day.”

Firming is #GasFed #PeakGenerators right? The old #Labor : ‘we need gas to transition’ tagline to provide energy when the sun don’t shine and the wind don’t blow, etc….

With #GenAISlop #TechBros #Datacentres favouring #GasTurbines generators, that’s leaving the door wide open for #environmental disasters and sets us up to fail in meeting our #emissions #targets (as pitiful as they are already).

That’s a clever move and a necessary one, but without mandating those #Datacentres develop their own renewable energy source, they will will have a monumental impact on the consuption of electricity that has to come from somewhere… potentially imported into SA. At what costs to the consumer? At what cost to the environments? At what cost to Emission targets? The devil is very much in the details. I’m not across them but I can ask questions and remain sceptical about #GenAISlop #ComputingFarms.

  51. “Greens call for pause on data centres until mandatory standards are in place
    By Holly Tregenza

The Greens say the government should impose an indefinite pause on any data centre developments until mandatory regulatory rules are in effect.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called AI "the new extractive industry" and says without the right regulation, big tech companies will take Australia's resources "and leave Australians with nothing to show for it".

"It is essential that we get the rules right. To do that, we need a pause on the approval and construction of new hyperscale data centres while we do this important policy work," she says.

"Just because big tech companies want to move at hyperspeed, doesn't mean that we need to fast-track and roll out the red carpet for them." (Source ABCNews Live)

Given that the #LNP and #PHON are unlikely to support the #AILegislation when it hits the floor in Parliament, this is a great opportunity for the #Greens and #IND to get that legislation right as well as the political coin that comes with that.

"We'll create a legal obligation for the next generation of large-scale data centres to underwrite new power supply, to pay their full share of grid connection, so no costs are passed on to homes or businesses," (Source ABC NEWS live)

We’ll have to wait for the legislation to find out if #ClimateAction is in there, because, given what we see elsewhere, these #TechBros #Datacentres aren’t shy about burning #FossilFuels (enough to power entire citites in some cases).
