Everything is a ploy or accused of being a ploy in a ploy to regain narrative or control. Accusations are admissions and eventually all action is suspect. Huxley or Orwell spectrum employed depending on side and usefulness. #ai sandbox to ethical arrest is a marketing tactic and stock safeguard. #trump ruins it in his own ploy, hurts it all (inc his).

  10. A #SpaceMirror Will Test Turning Night Into Day. What To Know About the Controversial Project

by Jeffrey Kluger, Jul 14, 2026

Excerpt: "The company envisions multiple uses for sun-reflecting satellites: assisting search and rescue operations, allowing construction projects to operate around the clock, charging solar power stations, increasing crop yield. But critics cite all manner of risks. Human and animal #CircadianRhythms could be badly affected if the sun—or a simulacrum of it—never sets. The practice of changing the clocks by a mere hour twice a year is already known to mess with human sleep-wake cycles, after all. Plants could bloom when they shouldn’t and die before their time. Orbital mirrors flashing and winking back to Earth could distract airline pilots. Finally, #LightPollution is already interfering with astronomical observations—a problem made even worse by satellite constellations like #SpaceX’s 10,000-strong #Starlink fleet. #ReflectOrbital’s 50,000 birds would dwarf even that."

  11. Weekly output: FCC frees Verizon from phone-unlocking rule, Donut Lab’s solid-state battery, Wikipedia turns 25, Google traffic trends

This week brought a lot of unpleasant headlines, but none made me feel uneasy like the news that Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson was subjected to an unexpected visit by the FBI at her house Wednesday that concluded with investigators confiscating her work and personal laptops, her phone and her smartwatch–all seized, it now seems, on a fraudulent pretext. Since then, the man who spent his equivalent of pocket change to buy the Post in 2013 has said nothing about that in public, yet another way in which Jeff Bezos has shown himself an unworthy successor to Katharine Graham and her son Don Graham.

In addition to what you see below, I wrote a post for Patreon readers sharing bonus bits about what I learned at CES two weeks ago.

1/12/2026, FCC Unties Verizon From 60-Day Phone-Unlocking Rule, PCMag

Two days after the Federal Communications Commission granted Verizon’s wish, Verizon suffered an hours-long outage that people could work around relatively easily if their phones were unlocked to allow them to add a third-party eSIM.

1/15/2026: Wikipedia Is Now 25 Years Old [Citation Not Needed], PCMag

I had made a mental note to myself to write an essay about the free online encyclopedia hitting the quarter-century mark, but then the actual date snuck up on me. Fortunately, the lede and the headline basically wrote themselves.

1/17/2026: Donut Labs’ Solid-State Battery-Powered Motorcycle Turned Heads at CES, But Big Questions Remain, PCMag

Writing this left me feeling over my skis more than usual–I don’t cover battery technology in any great depth, this startup has disclosed almost nothing about the design of its solid-state batteries, and two outside analysts weren’t willing to assess their pitch. But reading up at length on this company and on others working on better EV batteries did make me realize one thing: There’s enough innovation happening here that we don’t need Donut’s invention to work.

1/17/2026: AI Is Still Hammering News Sites, Google Search and Social Referrals Plunge, PCMag

The brutal declines in Google search traffic reported in a study published Monday by the University of Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism caught my eyes and those of my editors, but I also found some news value in this report’s stats about which online platforms and technologies newsroom leaders plan to emphasize or back away from.

    >>"We can do this the easy way or the hard way," Carr told the right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson. "These companies can find ways to change conduct to take action on Kimmel or, you know, there's going to be additional work for the FCC ahead." <<

Carr's adoption of Hollywood gangster cliche would be laughable were his actions not so dangerous. As with Trump, Miller, and Hegseth, the rhetoric suggests not just resentment towards "the libs", but an impoverished imagination trying to master surging anxieties about masculinity.

  13. #Skydance deal allows #Trump’s #FCC to “#CensorSpeech” and “#SilenceDissent” on #CBS

FCC now has “never-before-seen controls” over a #newsroom, commissioner warns.

    by Ashley Belanger – Jul 25, 2025

Excerpt: "Like many protesting #Colbert's firing, Gomez suggested that the FCC's requirements to approve the Skydance acquisition 'may only be' the 'beginning' of the Trump administration's #censorship and ongoing 'assault on the #FirstAmendment.'

"Notably, the White House issued a rare statement in response to a recent #SouthPark episode Paramount aired, which mockingly depicted Trump seducing Satan. The White House fumed that 'no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump’s hot streak.' But Trump (whose current term's ratings are at an all-time low) taking the time to acknowledge the episode drew jokes on social media that South Park may have riled Trump enough to scramble the Paramount acquisition approval. At the very least, the statement shows that Trump still cares what people say about him on TV. Trump has long been considered the US president most obsessed with TV, and critics now fear that he has seized new powers to more effectively block negative coverage."
