  1. Two days hiking, mountaineering and a little bit of climbing with my son.
We departed yesterday morning and started our little adventure at Bristen Kohlplatz. We hiked up to the Etzli hut SAC, which is currently closed for renovation.
After an hour break we climbed up the east ridge of Rossbodenstock and trained alpine climbing, rope handling a.s.o. The climb it self is nice and not too challenging. Ideal terrain for training. We were able to leave the climbing shoes in our backpack.
And the Best: Nobody else there thanks to the closed hut.
After that we picked up our luggage and finally found a nice spot for the night.
As both of us were quite exhausted this morning we opted for the shortest option and did some climbs at the climbing garden Spillauplatten before descending to the bus stop.
Currently we are sitting in the train back home, exhausted but happy.

  2. The legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja is among 10 climbers killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the global mountaineering community.

Purja rose to fame through the documentary 14 Peaks featuring his record-breaking climb of the world’s 14 highest mountains.

  3. I felt inspired to write a blog post ... "Treading the fine line between Scrambling and Rock Climbing"

Some thoughts on personal doubts, risk, mountain companions & rope protection in that grey area where scrambling and rock climbing overlap.

  4. Some snaps from this week's "Arista del Campanitas" scramble.

Feeling inspired, I'm drafting a blog titled "Treading the Fine Line Between Scrambling and Rock Climbing" — exploring that gloriously confusing grey zone where our discipline labels overlap.

First image traces the approximate route; the rest capture the kind of scenery that makes you forget your legs are burning.

  5. What a day yesterday. Lasting memories of that one for sure. Las Campanitas ridge to Veleta. A complex, dramatic route done without fuss or drama. Here's one with Linda at the summit of Salón 3325m with other members of our group scrambling up the right hand ridge

  6. Really looking forward to "la Arista del Campanitas" tomorrow. This ridge to Veleta 3394m summit is a proper scrambling route with grade 3+ (S) rock sections. Will be nice to get in the cool air above 3000m and get my hands on warm rock again.

  8. Reading discussions about yesterday's Grossglockner news (about the Austrian whose girlfriend died of hypothermia close to the peak of Grossglockner in january and who has now been charged with grossly negligent homicide) I think that maybe we have to remind people that:

    - It's a 3798 m mountain (12 460 feet). It's dangerous in a windy winter night, but it's not the Mount Everest death zone when it comes to height and oxygen and the risk of high altitude sickness. Don't know why people would bring up Everest as a comparison.

    - It's absolutely not relevant what the law says in other countries or what the law "typically" says in someone's opinion. It's only Austrian law that matters here.

    - Just because other people were murdered in the mountains doesn't mean that was the case here. The case was investigated and the authorities decided to indict him for grossly negligent homicide so they don't think there was an intention behind it.

  9. CW: climbing accident (fatalities)

Wow. Really bad climbing accident out in Washington at the North Early Winters Spire, three people died when a rappel anchor failed and they all fell down a steep couloir. On the face of it, strikingly similar to the infamous Sharkfin Tower tragedy back in 2005 which also killed three people.

  10. It's early days, but as someone who wants to #mountaineer one day, I was fascinated.

Genus #Blautia, a common #gut #bacteria studied for other reasons (increased cognitive development in infants & lower risk of #obesity & #diabetes in adults), can also possibly reduce damage caused by #AltitudeSickness

  11. What an adventure 🤠
We as #AlpSoil_Lab from #EuracResearch set up our highest pitfall traps yet at high #alpine sites at 3300m and 3100m.
These #GLORIA sites are quite steep and challenging to reach, but I can't wait to see the #soilfauna living up there 🔍

  12. Hey #MountainMonday, here a short trip (8 years ago) from the Timmelsjoch/Passo del Rombo (2474 m) up pathless to the Timmelsjochberg or Graslahnerspitz (2969 m) at the borderline of #Italy (#SouthTyrol) and #Austria (#Tyrol).
At the top, I repaired the small #SummitCross and found a young Golden #Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). There was also a Common Raven (Corvus corax) chasing a Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus).
