On thursday, I went to climb the " #Supercrack of #heidelberg " (by Wolfgang Güllich) with a friend. The #rock, even though similar sandstone according to my limited geology, was so different than in Palatinate, more dense, smooth and tough.

The crack is a handcrack with little crimps or holes, and almost no feet. I ... died. A lot. 3 moves at maximum, then i had to fall and rest. In the end, to retrieve a overcammed friend, I had to prusik 2-3 meters. Well, I learn 😅

Reminder; if you are into the spending time in the #outdoors (#hiking, #backpacking, #trailrunning, #camping, #kayaking, #rockclimbing, you name it), it's even more important for you to have medical training and carry the right equipment than it is for the average person. Take a class, buy (or, better, build) a #firstaid kit, and carry it. Weight is a number; don't let being #ultralight stop you from carrying the right stuff for each trip. The farther out you go, the more you should take.

"Halfway up The Nose of El Capitan is one of the wildest pendulums in existence"--it's called the King Swing! I shot this way back in 2015 with my Sony a6000 (a CMOS sensor camera) and a 70-200mm lens for a 35mm equivalent of 300mm. Still, it's cropped waaay in. The climber's goal is seen in the fourth frame, grabbing onto a crack in the rock face so they may continue their climb up The Nose and to the top.

Today, I was with my trad-leader friend at the Frohndellpfeiler in Palatinate. The crack was a "6", and it was amazing to see my friend lead this so effortlessly and securely. The route was a mix between actual hand- and fist-jamming crack-climbing and even a short shoulder crack portion, finished up by some slopey hell. I was able to top it! With only ~4 falls into the rope (3 times at the place of the video). I´m so DAMN proud!

Various routes from day three

Various photos of a few of the routes we worked on day three, in the Upper Gorge. This area is “trad[itional]” climbing. In many areas, hangers are bolted into the rock for clipping in safety gear. In this area, you have to bring your own hardware which you temporarily insert into the nooks and crannies of the rock.

Beautiful block from day one

On our first day in Red River Gorge, we drove to a nearby “roadside crag”. After a brief walk in, we encountered this magnificent block covered in 10a+ routes.

Third route

Once we had our top rope up, we spent the rest of our daylight here. Staright up, dihedral with a 5.8 finger jam crack. Paste your feet on the right and bury your hands… four attempts, but I couldn’t quite pull this one off.

Straight up the middle of this. Blank and mossy until you get to this unique feature mid-face.

Then we moved a bit left on that same wall. This was crazy hard to make the first move to get up onto the wall.

This wall was just a few degrees from vertical. Standing on tiny features like edge of a nickel. The upper lip is about 200 feet, and roofed out at least forty feet. Route started with this sheer, wet, mossy wall with a fist-jam crack (insert entire hand, make fist so it can’t come out and the walk up the wall :) Spent all day climbing all over this wall, and then one other route.

Few shots from Friday

If you ask me, this was a pretty sweet place to start climbing! Super easy warm up… before we moved onto some much harder stuff. I can just barely climb the “easy” climbs here. Lots of insane over-hanging stuff that is way beyond me.

I did about 6 climbs in the afternoon before I was totally “burnt”. A couple of them were a grade or more above my best climbs the last time Mike and I were on the rocks. Really happy about that; Means my general “get in shape” continues to yield broad (health, life, parkour, climbing) benefits without my having to hyper-focus on specific sports.
