  4. Launched last year and new-to-me, from Powder: One Man Is Preserving Freeskiing’s History, and It’s All Online. “Dedicated to the once-nascent freeskiing movement, it includes an exhaustive collection of movies, webisodes, contest results, pro models, books, and even toys, like the Jonny Moseley Huck Doll, all in one place.”

  5. The rising cost of Australian ski resorts: ‘It was like throwing $100 bills out the window as we drove up the mountain’
    By Jenny Valentish

Australia experienced a boom in beginner-friendly skiing in the 1980s and 1990s. But have global heating and rising lift prices ended that run?

  6. Some friends asked me, "What's that tag on your running shoe?"

For runners, cyclists, or anyone engaging in sports outside, this is perhaps the best safety device you can have - it's called RoadID, and it is a steel tag engraved with a website that first responders can use to access your name, emergency contacts, basic health information like allergies and chronic illnesses, health insurance and more. On the rear of the tag is an ID and PIN that first responders may use to access the information online, 24x7x365.

I have no financial interest in RoadID.

The tags come for shoes (probably the worst, since [people who suffer serious injuries after being] hit by a car lose their shoes, it's amazing, see below), wristbands, watchbands, and other creative tools.

I've had mine for more than a decade, and recommend them highly (though the company auto-subscribes you to their marketing bullshit every time you make a change, so one must remember to de-tick the box allowing them to spam you).

Edit: the de-shoeing phenomenon has led to lots of online discussion and also, when the US supported a national institute of health, some creative ideas for triaging injury severity: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/

Edit 2: I said everyone hit by a car loses their shoes. The statistics prove otherwise and suggest it is more likely in severe traumatic damage (which is the only kind I’ve seen), so I (and my idiot police academy instructor) was incorrect

  8. Oh, skiing pictures, such that they are. We went to Le Massif and Mont Grand-Fonds east of Québec City. Grand-Fonds is pretty old-school. So is Le Massif, in some ways, but it's much bigger. Le Massif also had a strike starting just after we left. Anyway, these pictures are all from Mont Grand-Fonds. #skiing #QC
