This is a biggie. She's probably about 1.5cm long, bright orange armor that is showing the dotted raised texture that isopods get when they're really big. Millipede back there too. There are easily 200 isopods in this photo, ranging from centimeters to nanometers.

The American Giant Millipede is a detritivore and an industrious, docile creature. It eats leaves and rotting wood, and likes moist, dark habitats. When threatened, it curls into a ball to protective its soft belly (a very long belly) or releases a noxious liquid. P.S. Please don’t come say hi while I’m in bed!

A desert millipede in New Mexico. I rarely saw these when I was growing up, but now they're common in the White Rock Canyon area of Los Alamos County. Curiously, this species was kept as pets in Europe awhile back. They're harmless to humans (though they'll munch on your fingers) and I find them endearing.

Baby millipede spotted in the terrarium! Cute little all translucent white the size of a long rice grain, zipping along the front by the glass.

(Yes, this is my cute. Cats and arthropods.)

That's really fucking cool. I saved these two millipedes from the raccoon-destroyed riparium, literally the only living thing that survived. I put them both in the indoor isopod home, and they've clearly been thriving.

Seeing that little offspring that I helped create makes me feel better about losing our six white-tipped goldfish, at the very least.
