  11. The mesh was much too fine for it's intended use in #FreeCAD.

    #MeshLab is my favorite tool for STL filtering, i. e. to get smoother surfaces or less vertices. Reducing the model to only a few thousand vertices saves quite some computation time in FreeCAD.

    I am a Research Director at #CNR (Italian National Research Council). I head the Visual Computing Lab in Pisa ( vcg.isti.cnr.it/ ).
    Messing with triangles and computer graphics since the 90ies.
    My research interests cover many fields: geometry processing 3D scanning data processing, Digital Fabrication, Architectural Geometry, SciViz and digital heritage.

    I started #MeshLab (and I still help to maintain) and many other open source tools.

  27. Thumbs keys on my #MechanicalKeyboard (zephirum.tuxfamily.org) are rotated by 90 degrees to get a denser thumb cluster when using MBK #keycaps. Sadly this neat trick is not compatible with the brand new thumb LDSA keycap 😟 Thankfully their #3Dprint files are open source so I used #MeshLab and #Blender to create a thumb LDSA keycap compatible with my keyboard 🤩

    Bonus: original LDSA keycaps are available for pre-ordered from @fourstepper's shop for people who live in 🇪🇺

    It provides a set of tools for editing, cleaning, healing, inspecting, rendering, texturing and converting meshes. It offers features for processing raw data produced by 3D digitization tools/devices and for preparing models for 3D printing.

    As with anything 3D, there is a bit of a learning curve, but I did manage to select some "noise" in my iPhone's 3D LiDAR images and clean those up a bit. They do have a series of YouTube playlist tutorials which should help, as well as some sample 3D scans to practice on.

  29. Great FLOSS news. Meshlab is program for processing and editing 3D triangular meshes. For me it's kind of the swiss army knive for STL and other 3d files. I've been using it for years for my 3D printing projects e.g. to simplify an STL file, to create a voronoi model of a 3D object or to create a collada file.

    The last couple of years development seemed to be stagnating but now it has picked up again and how! Already five new versions this year...
