  3. The solution isn't to avoid reading sources with bad biases, it's to make sure that all the sources you read aren't biased in the same way. The solution is to read more news, not less. Kill the censor in your head and try to understand the specifics of different perspectives. This can only be done by actually reading news from different perspectives.

  5. Too many people act like Al Jazeera has some sort of anti-American bias, but the truth is that the way that paper has reported the war of the US and Israel with Iran shows the deep entanglements of Qatar, the country that funds Al Jazeera, with the US. Like many countries in the region, Qatar has long hosted a US military  base, which was obviously going to be a target for Iran after the US and Israel launched a brutal and unprovoked attack on Iran in the middle of negotiations.

And what does Al Jazeera do? It
parrots the US narrative of Iran as being a dangerous aggressor in the region, as if it was supposed to just sit there and wait for the US to launch more attacks from those bases. When according to that same article, the attacks by Iran resulted in only 28 deaths, not in Qatar, but in the entire region. Clearly these were surgical strikes meant in a defensive capacity to take out US military bases in the region while minimizing casualties. The same can't be said for either the US or Israel, who immediately attacked schoolchildren in Iran. As of Mar 1, at least 3,468 people had been massacred in Iran by attacks from the US and Israel.

All of this kind of behavior is of course even worse in mainstream US-based news like The New York Times, CNN, or CBS, which promote US exceptionalism and imperialist propaganda.

And my point is not to avoid biased news--that's impossible. My point is to expand the news sources being read, not just within one's own country, but internationally, and to make an effort to understand which sources are truly independent from each other. Because bias isn't just a matter of how true a story is, but also a matter of what stories get told and how a news outlet chooses to tell them.

Regarding Al Jazeera, it should be understood that it is currently more aligned with the US than with its victims. To get a perspective from the region that's not US aligned, one option is
    Al Mayadeen.

  7. Brian Griffin, Me, and the Difference Between Calling Yourself a Writer and Actually Becoming One

There is something strangely fascinating about Family Guy and the way it portrays ambition. Beneath all the absurdity, cutaway gags, offensive jokes, and chaotic humor, the show often presents characters who are deeply stagnant. They dream big, they talk big, they imagine themselves as important, talented, intelligent, or special, but they rarely change. In many ways, that is part of the joke. The characters are trapped in a comedic loop where development resets because the show itself […]

  26. Something I cannot emphasize enough if you want to better understand what's happening in the world and the geopolitics driving it is to read from multiple different sources, and always be trying to increase your base of sources. And there's nothing wrong with looking at easy to access sources, at more mainstream sources, as long as you don't stop there. Expand your perspective by understanding the diversity of perspectives out there. Go beyond 'I listen to X voices' by just passively accepting the few voices in that group who get amplified by social media influencers or featured by mainstream media (and who may in fact often be the worst voices to be listening to when it comes to advocacy for that group), and go looking for the voices that don't.

Use social media as one jumping off point to expand your exposure to different news sources and to smaller voices who will likely never get into the news, much less the mainstream media. The social media landscape poses many challenges for distinguishing true and false information, but this can also be said of traditional news, especially mainstream media. There is no substitute for critical thinking. The strength of social media, though, is in the much wider and more varied spectrum of perspectives that you will find on it. Take advantage of that. It can be invaluable resource if you take the time to seek out and sift through those perspectives.

There will never be any source you where you can simply uncritically accept everything it says. You have to learn about the source itself, try to understand both its strengths and its failings. But at the end of the day, it's not a question of whether the information is out there. It is. It's a question of whether you will take the time and effort to seek it out.
