This + the final statement of proposal A : " Debian is not here to generate as much code as possible requiring manual review by a shrinking number of human volunteers, or to package every piece of software, or to rush new features, but these are what LLMs are used for. " could readily be applied e.g. to scientific research.
"/Universities/ are not here to generate as much /papers/ as possible requiring manual review by a shrinking number of /human researchers/" ...!

More than 3 years after joining Mastodon (Nov 2022) then stopping any posting on Twitter (Dec 2022), I have finally deactivated my Twitter/X account. I will continue to post on Mastodon, Bluesky and LinkedIn for now. #MastodonScience

Google just introduced DolphinGemma an AI model designed to decode dolphin communication. Yes, AI is now learning how dolphins "talk"! 🤯
By analyzing patterns in vocalizations, DolphinGemma could help us understand dolphin behavior on a whole new level.

The northern half of the U.S. is forecasted to be in the view path where the auroras may be most visible. Aurora forecast for over a dozen states this weekend Things that the human eye can't see, your phone can, so it'll be interesting to see just how far south we're getting aurora images this time
There is a huge geometric storm on the Sun, 16 times the size of Earth blasting on us earthlings this weekend. #MastodonScience #northernlights https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/05/10/northern-lights-aurora-when-time/73638964007/ -
In a new paper, published today in Current Biology, we analyse the genome of renowned composer Ludwig van Beethoven using a polygenic index related to musicality, as a way to illustrate the limits of genetic predictions at the individual level. Beethoven, one of the most celebrated musicians in history, scored unremarkably, ranking between the 9th & 11th percentile based on modern samples. We explain why this is no surprise & how it can provide a valuable teaching moment on the complex relationships between DNA & behaviour.
An interdisciplinary collaboration across two Max Planck Institutes (Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen & Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt), University of Amsterdam, Karolinska Institute, Vanderbilt University and others.

#MastodonScience biologists, can you help me remember what is the name of this initiative of #scientificPublishing with a sort of pooling of #preprints that get reviewed and then a few journals partners of that will (or will not) offer to consider the paper for publication?
I think @Co_Biologists journals were among partners but I can't find that again through your website. And of course I'm happy to read about other's experience with that process.

My question from this research is: We know that they make us gain weight, so do artificial sweeteners get ‘tasted’ by our bodies and mess with our blood sugar regulation? #science https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg26134751-400-why-do-we-have-taste-buds-in-our-heart-and-testicles/?utm_campaign=RSS%7CNSNS&utm_source=NSNS&utm_medium=RSS&utm_content=currents #MastodonScience

Yesterday it was one year that I joined Mastodon, thanks in great part to the excellent initiative of @alxsim in creating #ecoevosocial in a timely manner.
My activity on Twitter had been slowing down, and I've been really happy of the new place and pace I've found here. At the same time I regret what we lost with science Twitter, and I'm afraid we'll never get back anywhere.

😓 And reminder in case you might not be seeing how bad these numbers are: this is +21,000 micromorts. Which is 10x riskier than ascending the Matterhorn 🏔️, 100x more than base jumping 🪂 or 1000x than a tour in Afghanistan as a US soldier 🪖

On the anniversary of #MahsaAmini death in Iran, I am calling on #MastodonScience to help me find a permanent laboratory job for a female Ph.D. scientist from that country who has obtained a green card to the USA. Its time to show our solidarity to the #women of the Iran with more than hashtags. PM me for more info, trying to keep the person anonymous but generally #marinebiology

Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty

@pmeyfroidt I received it and decided to reply to increase representation of #MastodonScience in the replies. Also noticed the journalist advertises his Mastodon handle on Twitter (although it's inactive for now).

Welcome @alexfletcher, very happy to see you here!
A few #fedi things you may want to check:
#opencheck allows you to help preserve the connectivity of #sciencetwitter tree while also help creating a directory of #mastodonscience
@mechanobio is one of my preprint bots, from there you'll see the others
If you mention @academicchatter then all people following this bot account will also see the message -
There seems to be a rather widely shared feeling that lack of URL search is a limitation for #MastodonScience

#MastodonScience, note that this affects all the StackExchange websites, including e.g. #MathOverflow (used by professional #mathematicians) and all those more used by #students, such as #physics.SE, #biology.SE, ... which are currently far from bad in general.
On top of having to mark #AI student papers, lecturers will have to deal with misconceptions self-reinforced by super confident AI explaining out science there.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/astronomers-see-a-star-eating-a-planet-for-first-time-ever #mastodonscience multi-university team of researchers published a study on Wednesday in the journal Nature that described the first ever observation of a star swallowing a planet. The cosmic feast seems to have occurred in our very own Milky Way galaxy, roughly 12,000 lightyears away in the constellation Aquila. #NASA #Astronomy
