Is the #ecoevosocial server updating slowly / lagging for anyone else?

Dear ecoevo.social community,
given the price of our hosting has been steadily increasing in the past two years due to the increase in data, I have decided to move the server to another provider.

The plan right now is to take the server down for a few hours on the 30th of September to do the migration. You should expect some perturbations on that day and maybe the following days.

I will keep you updated on the details.

Yesterday it was one year that I joined Mastodon, thanks in great part to the excellent initiative of @alxsim in creating #ecoevosocial in a timely manner.
My activity on Twitter had been slowing down, and I've been really happy of the new place and pace I've found here. At the same time I regret what we lost with science Twitter, and I'm afraid we'll never get back anywhere.

ecoevo.social has been up for a year!

The server has now 5161 registered users (who mostly signed up early before the end of 2022), 1457 users active users during the last month, 2829 users active during the last 6 months.
While the retention rate could be better (around 15% 6 months after sign-up), I am very happy with how this community turned out and the interactions we can have here.
This server allowed me to take the plunge and delete my twitter and facebook accounts.

Our instance was upgraded to Mastodon 4.2, which brings some new nice features.

At some point, we'll have to have the discussion about the approaching launch of Meta on the fediverse and what this server, ecoevo.social, should do about it (i.e. to block it or not). I'm still undecided myself about this but feel free to raise your concerns or thoughts under this post.

If you haven't followed Meta will soon launch a micro-blogging plateform that is supposed to one day be connected to the fediverse through activitypub.

@alxsim @biorxiv_genomics @biorxiv_genetics @Julien_JOSEPH I love that the bots exist, thanks. OTOH the fact that they're on #EcoEvoSocial means that the local timeline becomes very encumbered and it's harder to see posts from people. Yet I don't want to mask #biorxiv or #preprint in all cases. Not sure what would be a good solution, just raising the issue in case it's relevant.

#EcoEvoSocial thanks for the useful and diverse feedback. It is reassuring for me as my position is that I use the active voice most frequently but I allow myself to also use passive voice, especially in methods (e.g. ‘Birds were sampled’). I know some academics are dogmatic about not using the passive voice and wanted to check if this was a shared view/general rule!

@AnneCharmantier #ecoevosocial Active voice! I was trained early to use passive, then took a career-changing scientific writing course with @clauswilke . It just feels good to state clearly, directly what you did in a Methods section, and takes fewer words (reduced "sentence lard", as Claus called it 🧈😂).

I've only been here a few days, but I've taken to Mastodon far quicker than other social media.

I appreciate the accessibility that's built in. I had set up bot notifications on Twitter to remind me to put alt text, and on Instagram I generally camel-case hashtags, but most users don't so it felt like a token gesture. Here it's baked in.

And perhaps having a specific interest helps. Finding the ecoevo server immediately felt like home.

@alxsim Because you have asked us users, I will say that cannot vote as my voice was not exactly there: I think ALL journals making money from the research from the kind of people at ecoevo.social is okay to be allowed at ecoevo.social as long as they give a financial contribution to ecoevo server.

Just ethical stuff seen from money pov. Ethical publishing is still somewhat arbitrary: people are pushing their views here and there. Not sure which one to follow.

We need to have a community discussion.

I added a new rule that I hope will avoid for-profit content on the server. (https://alxsimon.github.io/ecoevo.social-docs/rules.html)

But what do we do about for-profit journals?

My position is that journals managed by societies are welcome, but what about the other ones? Do we allow them on the server?

My personal view is that they shouldn't be allowed here as they are not contributing back to the community (#AcademicParasites).
