  1. How does a tiny natural molecule like hypericin become a powerful dye against cancer without using heavy metals? 🧬✨

My new paper reveals that aggregation is the key! By stacking together, these dyes suppress energy loss and enhance triplet yields through "vibronic coupling control".

This "strength in numbers" mechanism explains why hypericin is so effective in PDT.

  3. Sky lit up. Instagram lit up. But are we ready for a real solar storm?
That beautiful aurora could be a warning shot from the Sun.
    Space weather = Earth problem.

  4. We're just migrated from another instance, so here is our (re)introduction:

Neurofrontiers is a bilingual blog about interesting neuroscience topics that tries to be accessible to the broader public while still maintaining scientific accuracy. It's run by a team of two people: a computational neuroscientist, and a graphic designer. We think that being on social media allows us to stay up-to-date with the most recent discussions in science and hope to be able to connect with like-minded individuals.

Posting interests below so we show up in mutual searches:

  5. Realized today there was a time (circa 2016-2020?) when #ScienceTwitter was an amazing resource for career advice. Long threads re: “how to apply for grad school”, “what to expect in a chalk talk”, and other highlights from the hidden curriculum.

A practice to revive as we settle in new places?

  6. @jglypt I post & read on Mastodon because I prefer a non-monetised space where I curate my own feed and we are not manipulated by algos. Many highly intelligent people found the learning curve here too steep and opted for the convenience of Bluesky. I would like to read what they say, & be read by those people too. I see nothing wrong with opt-in #Bridgy, & every reason to reunite communities as valuable as #ScienceTwitter & #AcademicTwitter. Let's encourage widespread use!

  7. The Open Science Network demo at #Fediforum will focus on three key questions:

    - What features are missing in federated spaces to effectively access scientific content and news as in the first wave of #ScienceTwitter?
    - Which open data sources should be aggregated to merge a scientist's social and professional presence in a single meaningful profile?
    - What are the missing features to enhance scientific discussion, collaboration and production in a federated environment?

  8. @BeAware Yes but if they do that it works well. Anyway it's a significant first step to be readable?
& if people wish to interact, they can do so in one place rather than in the fragmented conversations that would result from cross-posting? #bridgy seems capable of reuniting the lost worlds of #ScienceTwitter.

  9. Hire me ✨ to characterize phylogenetics and ecophysiology of cyanobacteria? 😍 🦠

  10. This is my first job search since Twitter changed to X, and the migration to Mastodon.

Any advice for finding postdoc positions here?

  12. "Der Niedergang von #ScienceTwitter" — Mit dem Wandel von Twitter zu X hat die Plattform als Ort für lebendige und wertvolle #Wisskomm offenbar ausgedient – sowohl innerhalb der Wissenschaftsgemeinde wie auch darüber hinaus …

I'm not seeing a search opt-in nor privacy settings via web interface here on med-mastodon nor on my account at mstdn.social.

Plain text search would be helpful in bringing more folks over from #medtwitter #sciencetwitter etc.

  14. “Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst & uncertainty.”

That survey with only a 5% response rate went viral & got me wondering about other evidence & how the #ScienceTwitter #MastodonMigration was panning out.

    So I updated my study tracker & wrote a new post @PLOS : absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/

tl;dr There's been a big recent surge here; the future of #ScienceMastodon looks bright; ScienceX is materially diminished tho the network is still there.

  16. Welcome @alexfletcher, very happy to see you here!

A few #fedi things you may want to check:
#opencheck allows you to help preserve the connectivity of #sciencetwitter tree while also help creating a directory of #mastodonscience
@mechanobio is one of my preprint bots, from there you'll see the others
If you mention @academicchatter then all people following this bot account will also see the message
