  1. Hey, have #Mac filemanager app devs discovered that the folder tree structure popularized in #WindowsExplorer and #Konqueror is actually fucking good and way more useful than a sidebar full of dumb individual "locations"? Asking for a friend.

Catch of the Day: The 1MB Wonder! 💥💾

    Hey Retro Fans!

    The highlights of the day:

🪶 Off By One Browser: An absolute legend of minimalism visited us today. The Off By One Browser for Windows consists of a single standalone executable and is a tiny 1 megabyte in size. No bloated frameworks, no plugins – just pure, fast web browsing. It aligns perfectly with our philosophy!

🐉 Konqueror: The classic KDE file manager and web browser for Linux also stopped by. Just a reminder: This browser's engine (KHTML) was so groundbreaking back in the day that Apple used it as the foundation for Safari!

Whether it's tiny browser oddities or massive Amiga traffic – the Frog pond is buzzing. Keep it up!

  3. I have been trying the #Konqueror web browser for a while (from #KDE @kde). It works pretty well so far. However, #Nextcloud @nextcloud complains it is not a supported browser each time I log in. I ignore the warning because I haven't seen issues so far.

  6. In my "testing" #XFCE has been running very well with no noticeable issues. #Gnome looked good but ran slow and #LXDE had lots of glitches with the DE setup. I installed #JWM (have not tested) and plan to install #KDE to try out if available.

Web browsers are a very meh. #Dillo works okay, but is not great for "modern" websites. #Chromium (from Orange Pi) works okay but is very slow; standard Chromium is not available. #Epiphany was sooooo slow that is was not usable. #Konqueror installed but was missing dependencies to function. #Surf is working okay; good for basic sites but chugs on more demanding sites like Youtube.

Terminal apps all seem to be working fine. Simple apps like #GoodVibes and #Kpat work with out issues.

3D Games were not playable if they even loaded up. #Minetest opened but was like 1 frame per 3 seconds. #TuxCart installed but would not open.

So far on the #OrangePiRV2 the definitive winners are XFCE, Sakura (teminal), GoodVibes, Kpat, and #plank

  11. @danmodp When #Firefox got AI I switched to #Vivaldi and like it so far. Don't know if you'd count it as lightweight.

If privacy is your main concern then the obvious answer is the #Tor browser.

I am thinking of checking out #Konqueror again. It's been a good few years but I remember liking it, and it's good that there's a browser outside the WebKit/Blink/Gecko trifecta.

  13. Welp, I don't know why does what it does, but is cooked. What are some non-Firefox, and non-Chromium based browsers which are reasonably usable? ? ? (yeah I'm giving Qt WebEngine a pass but what other choice do I have?)

I wish devs could just do things that are cool, but they seem complacent and stubborn. In my ideal world Palemoon would align itself with FOSS and we'd all use it.

  14. @neil Just learned #konqueror is still maintained and has an idependent engine - KHTML. So this would be an option for KDE users. Though the focus serms to on #Angelfish which works well on mobile too, but uses blink engine from Google.

  15. @alcinnz @lapisdecor @dillo

Yeah, it's a pity that there's no way to get to #WebKit through #Qt anymore. Somewhat ironic, since Webkit was forked from from #Konqueror, which was a #KDE project built on Qt.

There's also #Suckless Surf as an über-minimalistic browser (not too bad as an #SSB, honestly), but it's not a serious contender for daily driving. I don't even daily drive #LuaKit, and I love vim-style programs.

  16. Which exactly is #KDE's browser? I know both is, but... which is the "de facto" web browser if you were to recommend one to the general user? #Falkon or #Konqueror?

I still find no reason to move away from
#Firefox, but just in case, I should prolly start looking for an alt considering #Mozilla's becoming more and more... hopeless/irrelevant.

#Chromium based browsers ain't a (valid) choice for me, fuck #Google.

Update: nvm, Falkon's not an option as it's a
#QtWebEngine browser, which is Chromium based.

  18. @canleaf @[email protected] @LilahTovMoon webkit hasn't been the Chrome engine since who knows how long ago. Probably close to 20 years now'

Went like this: ' web and file browser had a quite clean but basic HTML engine . Apple wanted an engine for their new browser and picked KHTML. Mozilla's gecko (not positive was gecko then) was a mess so wasn't used. KHTML was hurray! Became AppleWebkit. Google picked it for new Chrome. Soon forked wk to . Power of GPL.

  19. Everyday I like more the #KDE ecosystem.

One of the things I like the most on using #Konqueror as a browser is that it has support for multiple independent splits, it means I can have different zoom applied to the same site across splits.

Potzblitz.

  21. @HelloIt_sMe45

    #MozillaFirefox for almost everything.

#GoogleChrome for Google sites (mostly to keep Google out of my Firefox).

#Chromium for work stuff (because also GMail, GDrive, etc).

Sometimes I open #Konqueror for nostalgia sake.

  22. @[email protected]

#Mozilla has long lost its way.

I get that nobody wants to trust
#Chromium based #browsers because of the evil #Google-plex, but in reality ever since Mozilla started pushing telemetry and experiments on its users Mozilla hasn't acted much better.

Google will win, at least for a time, until a new
    #browser comes along.

If people put as much money and resources into
#KDE and #Konqueror we could have an actual competitor to Chromium but nobody wants to do that.

  23. If you really think about it, 98% of browsers nowadays are actually reskinned Konquerer with enhancements, the other 2% is Firefox.

  24. @nixCraft I’ve been a long-time #Safari (on macOS) and #Konqueror then #Epiphany (on Linux) user because I favor small and standard-compliant engines. And because Safari is so much more battery efficient. However, there are always web tools that don‘t work - mostly things like Zoom, Teams, etc. Those I use with #Chrome which has better options for screen sharing, recording, etc. - but I want to switch to #Firefox now because I don’t trust Google anymore.

  25. @nixCraft , and (non google spyware Chrome version), , . Sometimes , which is where KHTML > AppleWebKIt > Blink came from... go !!

  26. Watching my #browser options crumble, clinging on to #firefox, ready to have another serious look at #konqueror

  27. @keithzg @kpeace @aral I wonder what the #Konqueror / #KHTML developers browsed with as they were building their software, hm?

  28. @charlietuna @donmelton Fun fact: #Safari is based on #Konqueror (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konquero). And to their credit, Apple has given a lot back to the open source community. :)

(At least, #WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is based on #KHTML, the engine that powers Konqueror. WebKit was then forked to make #Blink, the engine that powers #Chrome and all #Chromium based browsers.)

  29. @ruari Well I’ve used #KHTML back in the day when it came with #Konqueror ;)

The thing is, I believe in someone forking #Blink when I see it. Until then, I focus on not letting #Gecko die.

  30. File Browser Integration for and is ready to use at github.com/jonelo/jacksum-fbi- - it could help you to calculate and verify the graphical way. The file browsers , , , , , resp. , -Filer, and are supported.

  31. Week 2 of : this time - a Debian based distribution with (aka desktop) by default. I like this good old KDE3 experience in general, even though keyboard layout switching didn't work out-of-box. And one horrible thing about the distro - they offer Google Chrome in default set. WTF, you do already have a nice native for TDE!
