It is really fascinating to me how software categories/archetypes have changed over time, i. e. what 'type' of program is responsible for which function of a computer.
Nowadays it's a given that the following archetypes of programs exist as separate applications:
- Web browser for connecting to the WWW, displaying web content, downloading files (and using a metric ton of web applications of all kinds).
- File browser for navigating directories and doing file operations, as well as volume and storage device management for some reason.
- Mail client for sending and receiving e-mail as well as managing your mail contacts.
- Audio player for playing audio files.
- Separate music organiser for tagging and managing a music library.
- Calendar app for dates, appointments and reminders.
And so on and so forth.
I just keep being positively surprised and delighted when I discover systems, desktop environments and programs that subvert this structure.
Like, #Konqueror being file browser, web browser, FTP client, mail client, feed reader, image viewer and more in one!
Standalone download managers being a thing!

Or #KDE's excellent PIM suite (#Kontact) that unifies everything from a phonebook to a mail client to an RSS feed reader to a calendar!So many common programs actually come with extra features from when these program types still used to be different! You don't need a ZSH framework to use it - the framework code just adds the repo's bin directory to your $PATH automatically. If you're not using a framework, add it's bin directory to your $PATH.

I'm currently a little desperate. I'm on #Xubuntu #Linux with #zsh and #tmux. I'm using the resurrect plugin for tmux, and I've also installed "Oh my tmux!" from here: https://github.com/gpakosz/.tmux
Maybe that's a little over-configured ... .
What I'm trying to get is the resurrect plugin to restore my previously saved session with all running apps in their panes/windows.
What I get is the restoration of all my tmux windows and panes with the previously started applications in there (bmon, qalc, htop, nvim). But ... unfortunately htop is the only application running when the restoration is finished. bmon, qalc and nvim seem to crash. I can see the "UI" of the application (for example nvim) and underneath the prompt of my shell.
I've played around with several configuration options but nothing helped. Is there any good tutorial for noobs like me? And is this even possible what I'm trying to achieve?

ZSH people: I keep thinking I should switch from ancient Bash to ZSH on my Mac, and each time I try it I last about two minutes. Is there a simple way to make its tab completion not overwrite stuff I've already typed? And not put random spaces in the middle of paths that it's completing so that the next tab starts again from the current directory instead of adding the next path component?

Alt+Dot(orEsc,Dot), it shows the previous command's final argument. Do it again for the command before that.Alt+{2,Dot} (holding Alt, press 2 then Dot) gets the penultimate argument. Keep holding Alt so you can press Dot to go to older commands.#bash & #zsh. Note, some terminals don't support the Alt implementation. Esc can't enumerate.

My zsh took ~2s to start every terminal tab. I stopped guessing and profiled it with zprof, then cut it to 350ms.
What did it: removing nvm (mise already owned node), lazy-loading conda instead of activating base on every shell, and deduplicating compinit which was running thrice.
The takeaway: time it before you touch it, attack the biggest bar, prefer deletion to cleverness. Full write-up with commands and commits below.

Petite bagarre avec ma configuration #zsh ce matin.
Je l'ai revue récemment pour l'alléger et réduire le temps de chargement de mon shell.
Parmi les optimisations : `compinit -C` qui permet d'utiliser le dump du système de completion plutôt que le regénérer à chaque fois.
Problème : ça a cassé la completion (plus rien ne fonctionnait).
J'ai découvert qu'un `compinit` est exécuté par la conf système (`/etc/zsh/zshrc`).
La solution : mettre `skip_global_compinit=1` dans `~/.zshenv`.

@dec_hl Currently zsh within waveterm.
My ~/etc/zshrc* have followed me around from one machine to another for 25yr+ so that's home.
Waveterm is a very recent change - it combines tiling layout with sysinfo monitoring, file-mangling and browsing all in one (although you don't _have_ to). Basically iTerm2 died on me and I jumped ship. And you can do lots without touching YAML or JSON, unlike some others.
