Spent most of the day trying to get #WSL to work again in order to use #Docker after it spontaneously broke, with no luck so far. Tried lots of combinations of uninstall and reinstall and repair and reset and restart and maybe I can use Hyper-V instead, all with no progress at all, not even different errors.

Update: maybe got it to work? Right before I had to leave for an appointment so I am not that confident yet, but it cleared what had been the problem all day.

I'm literally not surprised at this news...United women's team has had, zero investment this summer, sold off the top players, and of course Ratcliffe has already said in not so many words that 'he couldn't give a fuck about the women's team'...so, Skinner leaving right about now was inevitable, plus he is a stubborn fucking coach and probably should've gone in 2024 but got them into the WUCL so, got a reprieve and 2nd bite of the cherry.

I ended up setting up #GitLab #Runner on my holiday-and-not-work Windows based ThinkPad. I did it with a twist though.

GitLab runner itself runs as a windows binary. Individual jobs use #WSLc - new containers powered by #WSL virtual machine.

The whole thing is very light-weight, easy to use and does not need docker to be installed.

I am very happy to be able to use #WSL at work. We have recordings from Zoom that we need to retain but, sometimes they are pretty huge. I used #Handbreak to get them to a smaller size however it was hit and miss because there is no target size. I was able to use #FFMPEG to watch a folder for videos and then transcode to a target file size, its amazing and so easy. #UbuntuCLI #Linux #Ubuntu #OpenSource

Upgraded my WSL Fedora 42 at work from 42 to 43 to 44.

Very important thing to check before doing that:

Open WSL-Settings and set the VM timeout to a high value (by default it is 60 seconds).

The VM was killed because it was "idle" while DNF5 worked its magic a.k.a doing the release upgrade.

So the resulting Fedora 43 was half upgraded with its repos still pointing to the 42 ones and and dozens of packages mixed up between releases.

Noticed that and fortunately had one release left to upgrade to.

The upgrade to 44 worked just fine.
