Pretty quiet weekend for ham radio this time around. Aside from the bands not being all that great, I had to be an adult and do things around the house too. Boo! But at least I did get some parks in. =)

BitX 17a – IF Filter
I was graciously given a partially completed BitX 17a kit by Thaire W2APF back in June, and I’ve been working on it slowly. The tests seem to be working out OK, and I’ve even gotten to use the oscilloscope and the tinySA a few times.
Here are a few notes on the IF filter measurement based on what I understand from the manual.
At this point you have the first opportunity to see the IF Filter passband. If you slowly tune the 12.96 MHz signal across the IF frequency range while monitoring RF voltage at the ungrounded end of R65 with an oscilloscope or an RF detection probe and voltmeter you can see the relative response at various frequencies. By recording the signal level at 200 Hz intervals and plotting this on graph paper you can generate a picture of the IF filter response curve. Unless you convert your voltage readings to log scale though they will look a bit rough. For a truly representative graph you need to convert your voltage readings to db.
It is possible to set the BFO frequency now. Once you know where the lower edge of the IF filter passband is located, you can calculate the 20 db point on that slope and set your BFO for that frequency. Alternatively, you can adjust the BFO so you can hear the zerobeat as you tune across the upper sideband but not hear it on the lower sideband. That will get you in the right area for later fine tuning on a signal being received from the antenna.Input -18.5 dBm. Low output ON for signal. Mod None. Adjust frequency on tinySA by hand.

Measure VRMS on scope.Lower edge of the passband appears to be at 12,957,600 Hz, which is 5.78 dBm. 20 dBm down from that is -14.22, which is at about 12,956,700 Hz. Let’s aim the BFO for that I guess.
Did I do this wrong? Please let me know!

In #Stuttgart verschwinden 190 Meter Busspur. #StuttgarterNachrichten so: "Stadt korrigiert Verkehrsplanung [...] Die Fahrer der Linienbusse meiden den Fahrstreifen." Selbst schuld also.

folks at #dwebcamp, do you know that I been maintaining a fork of Patchwork #SecureScuttlebutt client called Poncho Wonky? I brought it up to date with dependencies and added a lot of features, some of which I described in:
https://andregarzia.com/2026/01/three-months-of-poncho-wonky.html
I added many more since then including multiple identities, a goodreads alternative and so on.
If you need help onboarding to #SSB come find me at the camp, I will help you. I'm easy to spot, look for the blue hair and neck tattoo.
If you just wanna grab a binary release for Poncho Wonky:
https://github.com/soapdog/patchwork/releases/tag/v5.3.0
The source is also available there.
Keep Scuttling,

implementing something no one asked for in #SSB is one of my fav things to do =^.^=
#decentralisation -
I've just tested the principle of #SSB processing using Controlled-Envelope Single-Sideband modulation (CESSB) in #GNURadio and it is beyond beautiful.
It uses a two stage process of clipping and peak stretching that combined can reduce the effects of over modulation typically introduced by #agc
Even extremely overmodulated input signals (25x) still produce clean audio indistinguishable from the original source signal.

At last summer's Estonian Ham Fest, someone joked that they would use an AI-generated female voice to call CQ in future contests, as this certainly would attract more attention.
I haven't spent much time on HF since then, but I was stunned today when I heard OE1GAQ calling CQ on 20 m with a female robot voice. It even says: 'I am an artificial intelligence station, over,' and it got lots of responses.
Fellow hams, this is devastating! As if SSB wasn't already dying and amateurs weren't already moving on to FT8. Any ideas about how to react to this? Do we have to specify a call in analogy to 'CQ DX' calling only for humans? It's frustrating to see this AI stupidity spreading everywhere, but seeing it taking hold even in SSB makes me sick.

Another super silly idea. This time #SSB speech processing.
What if we break down speech into several tones and harmonics using a polyphase channelizer (#PFB), subsequently select the maximum tone of each channel.
Then reconstruct the speech by only restransmitting the fundament of each channel?
Would it even be audible, how many channels would be needed. Do we need to select multiple tones per channels and would the resulting speech be pleasant to hear?

This weekend was Museum Ships on the Air! I got my 15 ships to send in my logs for a certificate, so I'll be doing that soon! Band conditions weren't the best, but that made the ship even more rewarding to get. A few POTA sprinkled in there with them, too.

Welp, here's the weekend's contacts. Really annoyed with myself that I ended up doing digital (the blue ones) but in my defense, those were all 6m and 10m. The bands were open, so I decided to have a little fun with it. Otherwise, just the red ones are SSB, and that's all I could actually manage in propagation the way it was this weekend.

I bet it would be really cool if somebody modified the Heltec #meshtastic firmware so that it's broadcast in ad hoc open Wi-Fi connection with a dead drop public dashboard. Or even a #SecureScuttleButt node #ssb

Another #POTA activation while being in #Eichstätt (Bavaria), DE-0010 (Altmühltal Nature Park). Equipped with my KX2 I could work #SSB only. Condx were not optimal. In between it rained. In the end 11 QSO in the log.
Thanks hunters!

Å fy faen endelig 😭😭
Så frustrerende å diskutere datasenter med folk som ikke snakker om sammme ting.
Deilig å være et sted hvor dette faktisk blir nyansert.

The last 2 weekends in one map. The bands have been horrible lately, and this is all I got. Mostly all on 20 meters, a few on 40 meters. It was tough but fun.

My experience is pretty boring, i think. I don't know how exotic my QSOs get, as when i was SUPER active, I didn't know how to tell how exotic a station was.
Most all the #DX i have ever done was #MorseCode
But i did hit the #MIR on #2m #VHF back in the day. that seemed pretty exotic.
