RIP #michaeltilsonthomas Almost no one mentions his and maestro #johnmclaughlin #michaelgibbs and #georgemartin (see picture) collaboration on Apocalypse. But when talking about "anglosaxon symphonic" music in the 20th century, #mahavishnu remains important I think, just as much as all the cage and feldman and all the stravinsky work. That totally unironic, 70s megalomaniac character, its almost like a Howard Hughes style mad scientist/entrepreneur project goes Symphony.

Soooo. Some Moons ago I had this ear for a moment. Not sure if Larry had set the stage but for whatever reason there was a moment. Performers include Carly Simon and Carole King on backing vocals, Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and John McLaughlin (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) on “Someone.”

I haven’t listened to Birds of Fire in years, maybe decades! The title track at first seemed just crazy. No holds barred, turned up to 11. But the more I listened, the deeper into it I got.
