  1. RIP #michaeltilsonthomas Almost no one mentions his and maestro #johnmclaughlin #michaelgibbs and #georgemartin (see picture) collaboration on Apocalypse. But when talking about "anglosaxon symphonic" music in the 20th century, #mahavishnu remains important I think, just as much as all the cage and feldman and all the stravinsky work. That totally unironic, 70s megalomaniac character, its almost like a Howard Hughes style mad scientist/entrepreneur project goes Symphony.

  2. New #review today: "#GaryHusband's work with #AllanHoldsworth and #JohnMcLaughlin alone gives him a high profile, and there are so many more artists he’s worked with. But he’s also been working as a leader of his own projects, and Postcards from the Past serves as an entry point to that work. But it doesn’t just feature tracks from his releases — it contains a wealth of material that’s never been available before." #ExposeOnline #jazz #JazzRock expose.org/index.php/articles/

  4. Listen to Miles Davis' "Right Off," recorded in 1970, released in 1971 as part of "A Tribute to Jack Johnson." Got Billy Cobham hittin' the 2 and 4 accents for that rock beat now. Likely should be played loud.

  6. The logical next music to visit with, after "Filles de Kilimanjaro," is "In a Silent Way" (1969). Listen to "It's About that Time." Miles hasn't hooked up a wa-wa pedal yet, but Wayne has switched to soprano, and McLaughlin has arrived. The sound is evolving quickly.

  8. Konec i začátek: Apocalypse a vize Johna McLaughlina

  9. Soooo. Some Moons ago I had this ear for a moment. Not sure if Larry had set the stage but for whatever reason there was a moment. It was pre #COVID but there had been this close interval of irreparable losses in muso land and we were reeling. I’d become furious at the term “rest in peace” as ignorance of the continuum…like we were insulting the **Very Large Spirits* of our fellows who had just left the building. That moment was with #JohnMclaughlin and I’d probably just said the dumbest thing-

  10. New #review today: "The previous releases we’ve reviewed from drummer #PhilHaynes have not covered the breadth of his career, which has spanned a variety of different streams of #jazz. On Return to Electric, he pays homage to the heady days of the late 60s and early 70s when jazz musicians started using electric instruments. His companions on this journey are bassist #DrewGress and guitarist #SteveSalerno." #ExposeOnline #ChickCorea #WayneShorter #JohnMcLaughlin expose.org/index.php/articles/

  12. White label promo of the first Japanese pressing of one of my favorite albums. Desert island pick for sure.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire

  13. Miles Davis - Jack Johnson

I've read multiple conflicting accounts of how this album came together. Despite it being two tracks (Side A - Right Off; Side B - Yesternow), it was edited together by Teo Macero from a bunch of separate sessions.

But whatever the truth is, the band absolutely cooks. Probably my favorite "Electric Miles" album.

  18. The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!

Major gear shift to this fusion milestone, featuring Williams (on drums, of course), John McLaughlin (guitar), and Larry Young (organ).

Heavily on the “rock" and/or free side of fusion, lots of tempo changes, lots of distortion on the guitar, as well as mic-saturating organ.

  22. James Taylor, One Man Dog, 1972 on Warner Bros.

This was Taylor’s fourth studio album, with “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” 18 tracks means lots of short bits / interludes, some of which can feel a bit unfinished but overall I like the effect.

Performers include Carly Simon and Carole King on backing vocals, Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and John McLaughlin (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) on “Someone.”

  23. Ted Tocks Covers - Year 7 - Day 47

    The Pink Panther Theme

In a world where the credits roll long after the film is over, we lost the great composer Henry Mancini on this day exactly thirty years ago.

Today’s feature is the timeless piece known as ‘The Pink Panther Theme’ which became synonymous with a series of hilarious film starring the legendary actor Peter Sellers.

  24. I haven’t listened to Birds of Fire in years, maybe decades! The title track at first seemed just crazy. No holds barred, turned up to 11. But the more I listened, the deeper into it I got. This album needs to be heard in its entirety. The climactic track, One Word, damn! A true #fusion classic. #JohnMcLaughlin #MahavishnuOrchestra #Nowplaying #jazz #vinyl

Now on Tiny Desk, in intimate miniature form!

Just listen to those insanely complex rhythms and melodies:
