I didn’t know Carly Simon was only a year younger than I, but so much of her work echoed my own timeline that I should have realized.
Her songs became my personal soundtrack of those heady nights of that era (when I was liberated from a sad marriage, discovered younger men, forged a new career, partied like the 1970-80’s, and “hot girls on a hot summer’s night” wasn’t just a song lyric).
My CS playlist casts me into deep nostalgia as nothing else can — friends & lovers & children gone forever, a riotous redheaded persona transformed into today’s hag in the mirror, the best music tortured into Muzak.
I’ve already left instructions that her song be played at my wake: “Life is eternal, love is immortal, and death is only a horizon…”
Nobody did it better…🎶🎵

So, she wrote the song about someone who was vain and in the chorus she sings that he's so vain that he probably thinks the song that she's singing (which is about him) is about him. Like that's some 'gotcha' moment.
