  1. RIP #michaeltilsonthomas Almost no one mentions his and maestro #johnmclaughlin #michaelgibbs and #georgemartin (see picture) collaboration on Apocalypse. But when talking about "anglosaxon symphonic" music in the 20th century, #mahavishnu remains important I think, just as much as all the cage and feldman and all the stravinsky work. That totally unironic, 70s megalomaniac character, its almost like a Howard Hughes style mad scientist/entrepreneur project goes Symphony.

  5. Listen to Miles Davis' "Right Off," recorded in 1970, released in 1971 as part of "A Tribute to Jack Johnson." Got Billy Cobham hittin' the 2 and 4 accents for that rock beat now. Likely should be played loud.

  6. White label promo of the first Japanese pressing of one of my favorite albums. Desert island pick for sure.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire

    (1973 – Japan, Promo, CBS/Sony – SOPL-175)

  7. Miles Davis - Jack Johnson

I've read multiple conflicting accounts of how this album came together. Despite it being two tracks (Side A - Right Off; Side B - Yesternow), it was edited together by Teo Macero from a bunch of separate sessions.

But whatever the truth is, the band absolutely cooks. Probably my favorite "Electric Miles" album.

  8. Sometimes a little Flamenco is very refreshing. This trio has released multiple studio and live recordings over the years, each one being a masterpieces on its own.

Artist: John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia
Album: Passion, Grace & Fire (1983)
    Release: Late 1980s reissue
    Region: US
    Label: Columbia – CK 38645

  9. The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!

Major gear shift to this fusion milestone, featuring Williams (on drums, of course), John McLaughlin (guitar), and Larry Young (organ).

Heavily on the “rock" and/or free side of fusion, lots of tempo changes, lots of distortion on the guitar, as well as mic-saturating organ.

  10. As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 507 on The List, submitted by Almoehi.

Based on the fact that this album was submitted for The List more than once, chances are a lot of you know already this one. I, for one, did not, and so I wasn’t sure what I was in for. As soon as I put it on though, it sounded so familiar. Not in terms of the music itself, but the feeling, the energy, the vibe – whatever the right word is for that magic that a fantastic live music recording captures, particularly when the event that is captured is clearly a celebration of music. Like, we all obviously love when a musician is excellent at what they do and plays beautiful music. But when it is obvious that the musician absolutely digs what they do and are just as ecstatic as the audience is to hear the music they and their bandmates are playing?! Now that is something incredibly special to witness, absolute bliss.

And, because the night captured in this album was the meeting of three spectacular guitarists and their different specialties, this album distinctly reminded me of a concert I attended 14 years ago that featured the guitar trio of Pavlo (Greek-Canadian, specializes in romantic Mediterranean style of guitar), Rik Emmett (former lead guitarist of the Canadian hard rock band Triumph), and Oscar Lopez (Chilean-Canadian, specializes in Latin acoustic guitar). Though I didn’t know it at the time, the creation of the Pavlo/Emmett/Lopez trio was inspired by Di Meola/McLaughlin/De Lucia, and the concert was in support of the one album they put out together, Trifecta (which went on to be nominated for a Juno Award that year, i.e., essentially a Canadian Grammy). Just as it seems the audience had the pleasure of witnessing that Friday night in San Francisco, that night was an unforgettable, joyful meeting of three guitarists who loved playing their guitars.

So, all that is to say – if you dig guitars, excellent guitarists, and excellent guitarists who love what they do, listen to Friday Night In San Francisco, and maybe also check out Trifecta. I also highly recommend checking out Pavlo’s discography, particularly Fantasia.

*My surveys are getting a bit out of hand, so I’ll put the choices/results at the bottom of posts from now on. The survey choices that led to this spotlight were “Here in my car”, “Where the image”, and “Breaks down”, with the first being the winning selection. The survey result was translated as picking the first album in The List with one of the phrase’s words in the title, the matching word here being “in”.

  11. I remember Jazzed-up Indian Classical fusion band Shakti bringing the house down at Bozar Brussels.

Now on Tiny Desk, in intimate miniature form!

Just listen to those insanely complex rhythms and melodies:

  14. Sunday afternoon, eschewing the mellow & instead #NowListening to #JackJohnson by #MilesDavis.

When it comes to #jazz, I’m normally a hardbop guy & this is assuredly not that. But I am a guitarist & when #JohnMcLaughlin cuts loose, it’s something else: heavy, discordant, spiky, with Miles anchoring the melody over everything.

This is the #MoFi reissue & sounds properly three dimensional, very natural, with incredible dynamics.
