It took me a long time to work out what people were talking about when they mentioned "Fireweed". This is because I have always known this beautiful wildflower as Rosebay willowherb. It's very good at turning disused land into a wildlife haven.

This is fireweed, a rather glorious #NativePlant that appears in profusion in my yard each year. It's taller than you are! I've read that parts of it are edible, so I'm going to try some nibbles to see if it might become a part of my salads.

Next in my Canada 🇨🇦 series: the Yukon. The symbols of the Yukon, its official bird, the Raven & its flower, fireweed cover the hand-carved map of the Yukon in this linocut. The block was inked ‘à la poupée’ (with different colours, pink-magenta and black in different areas) and printed by hand on lovely Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.
The raven is the largest member of the crow family 🧵

In case you wondered what moose like to eat (it’s fireweed next to my house), these photos were taken two days apart.

Full transparency: I painted this last night. But it was very late last night! And the part that’s relevant to today is that I looked at it again just now, when I took the second photo (with my thumb for scale), and I DON’T HATE IT. I painted something tiny and I’m still happy with it the next day!

One of the most surprising things about the PCT for me was how many burnt stretches of trail there are. The ones in Oregon and Washington tend to have dense fields of fireweed.
