“Hm, I see,” the Badger said, sipping his coffee. In front of him was a half-eaten ham sandwich, the kind with thick slabs of honey-cured meat and fresh garden tomatoes. Around it lay heaps of oven-baked crisps, homemade pickles, and a pot of spotted dick. Nearby was the #letter he had received asking him to attend a very important meeting.
Normally, he would have disregarded such a letter as if it had been written in Hangul, i.e., indecipherable, but with Rattie’s and the Mole’s signatures, there was nothing else to do but concede.
The Water Rat waited calmly across from him at a table set up along the chattering river. Its busy spring flood, a sharp contrast to the fine, sleek animal’s unruffled demeanor. The Mole, however, was practically twitching with anxiety for his friend Toad. For that was who they were discussing.
“Hum,” the Badger cleared his throat again. “I’m sure I can’t defend him. Too many people.” The Badger, as you know, was a shy, retiring fellow who hated all Society.
“But you must,” the Mole said, his lip trembling. His hands fluttered like the titmice who flitted along the riverbank, darting in and out of the #fireweed #stems and hawthorn branches. “They shall throw him back in the gaol. The first time was bad enough, but a second time!”
“You really should eat,” Ratty said, joining the conversation. He pointed at his friend’s barely touched watercress sandwich. The shandy beside it had been disregarded as well. Even the Mole’s favorite beet salad was untasted.
“Badger is a fine fellow,” and here the Rat gave a nod to the noble beast, who pretended not to hear the compliment. The Rat continued, saying, “He would never abandon a friend.”
“Indeed, not,” the Badger said, all dignity.
The Mole held his breath till his learned friend resumed.
“I know a creature well versed in the law. She’s a trifle cynical and loves a good prank, but you can count on her in a pinch.” Normally, it wasn’t done for an animal to be so blunt about another. That he did so showed how seriously he took the situation.
“Who?” the Mole asked breathlessly. “Who?”
“Airisu, the Crow,” the Badger finished, holding out his cup for a little more of Rattie’s fine brew.
