That settled things, and after another round of tea, stew, and barley grain, the shaman led us out into the night fog. She turned and began following a shale-littered trail that climbed to the top of a ridge. On the far side, the murk parted, revealing Himeji Castle below. It stood white against the velvety black sky, glittering. Mist swirled around it, like ghostly arms embracing the fortress. Above, a slender moon and bright stars shone. As we gazed, a comet streaked across the heavens. I would forever remember the beauty of that scene.

“The cowherd seeks his lover,” Seirei-onna said. “#Crossing for one night is more than I shall ever have. Now go. The way is open for you, as it is closed to me.” She gestured to a path leading down to the lights of the castle town below.
