I grew up with the VHS-version (upper-left corner). I wonder how many lossy transfers it had gone through before my eyes.

The bluray-scan (which according to comments was the same as with the dvd, but DVD-version was then compressed) looks so shiny and new. Really challenges the "world used to be black and white, or at least bleak in colour" -mindset I carry (against better knowledge).

Here are two preview scans, randomly picked out of the stack of slides I got last weekend. The images are neither cropped nor digitally corrected. I just blew away the loose dust.

This sunset! Remember, this old color reversal film was exposed 65 or 66 years ago and shown countless times.

I think it should really be worth washing, scanning all the film snippets and then framing and packaging them again for the long-term archive.

Arrived!

Another stack of slides arrived yesterday. Most slides are from the 1950's and 1960's, the latter framed in then still luxuriously expensive slide frames with anti-Newton glass.

Everything is very smudged and dusty on the outside - my whole scanning table is dirty. But fortunately the slide film itself is perfectly preserved... 🤩🤩

In total, around 1,200 more slides arrived yesterday. Together with the stack of films from a few weeks ago, I'll probably have enough to do until the summer. 🙄🤭

This film needs some TLC. The image quality is fine, but the physical film has issues--it's not supposed to be twisty like that, and it has trouble running through a projector. This is due to uneven shrinkage, maybe caused by long storage in a hot attic. Kodak's code symbols on the film margin tell us that this is a 1948 print.

Our film archivist has prescribed #Vitafilm treatment. It will sit soaking in a can full of Vitafilm for a month, and then spend 5 months in a sealed can so that the vapors can work some magic.

I did succeed in running this film once, and it's quite entertaining, so I hope we can show it to you all in the theater someday. It's "Hold Still", a Christie Comedy starring Anne Cornwall, most famous for costarring in Buster Keaton's "College", but based on this short film ought to be better known in her own right.
