2️⃣/2️⃣ Filmstrips document how generations of Americans learned, worked, communicated, and understood the world around them. Preserving them means saving a unique historical record before more of it disappears.

Last night, got the courage to watch The Zone of Interest, by Jonathan Glazer, which I strongly recommend. My one note here is: the sound is another story being told in parallel to the images, giving an eerie and tense feeling throughout. The author´s research on real footage was a key to this film. #cinema #cinemaresearch #filmheritage #filmpreservation

This week we lost avantgarde filmmaker Ken Jacobs, whose flickering experiments with film and light reinforced the lesson of variable media preservation: we keep things alive by keeping them moving.

Donations and patronage keep me able to save #filmstrips. We are way behind, and dangerously close to having to shut down. We aren't eligible for grants, and this is full-time work. Can you help us spread the word?

twelve years ago, a painter by the name of anders ramsell painted 12,597 aquarelle paintings of blade runner, shot by shot, of the entire film edited down to ~35 minutes. it took two years of painstaking work, all done in his spare time after work each night.
the video circled around the web for a few years, and quietly disappeared from every single site it was hosted at.
a few months ago i spent a few hours digging for it, and finally found a copy of the original file.
i'm not sure how long it will last over at IA, so enjoy it while you can. it is a true achievement. 🙏

@thudfactor It's almost like we need lots of folks making a concerted effort to preserve these things, innit? #FilmPreservation

George Willeman's job is to preserve 100 years of film history at the Library of Congress. As one of the many speakers in our digital curation webinars, he explained to our students why nitrate film is paradoxically one of the most durable yet volatile audiovisual formats, depending on how you handle it.
You can watch our "explosive" interview with George here:

'What If the Only Way to Protect Films and TV Series from Streaming Platforms...Is to Break the Law?'
Hollywood has a long history of scrapping films and TV to save money, but the recent purging of "content" from streamers poses a new kind of threat to our cultural heritage.

Probably will have to track this movie down later on, guessing since it's on the festival circuit now, no international distribution yet or streaming. Even more reasons to be a #movies hoarder. #FilmPreservation
A new documentary acts as a cautionary tale urging us to be more aware of how we store and preserve what we film and watch:

If you're in NYC, a high recommendation for "To Save and Project," the annual MoMA film preservation fest, going on now.
One highlight: The US premier of a restored "Kaze no naka no mendori (A Hen in the Wind)" by Yasujiro Ozu. https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/8362

Until I do my second transfer, here is a Public Domain piece of Television History that has now been liberated from oblivion, and is yours to enjoy, remix, review, re-use, re-release, abuse, archive, re-enact, study, or ignore.
It's available on peertube: https://mountaintown.video/videos/watch/1a4701a6-a754-4aa3-9feb-3100e4589e7b where you can download it directly to use and abuse as you see fit.

Alright! I got a new setup for my #FilmPreservation project and I was all set to spend the evening digitizing film, but I have a problem!
I blew the bulb in my amplifier section!
Film projectors make use of optical sound. That sound is delivered by a bulb glowing above a light sensitive circuit, over which the optical soundtrack passes.
No bulb, no sound.
The main bulb in this projector was replaced with an LED, but the sound bulb was left as is.

When I say "video gear" I mean two 80s ENG cameras, a hardware video mixer, my #FilmPreservation rig, my desktop which is currently my main capture rig, two newer cameras, and a couple of raspberry pis that do composite stuff.
At some point, once everything is set up, I'll do a tour video.

A development in my #filmpreservation project
It looks like many (but not all?) of my space patrol kinescopes are negatives. That's a little abnormal, and not something I've ever dealt with before.
I know I can invert the video in post, so I'm not worried about that at all, but I have no idea how/if I can capture the audio?
Anyone have any experience with this or insight?
