  1. “To coin a phrase”*…

Elliot Thornley nods to Shakespeare as the prodigious coiner of words (and phrases) that he was…

And then reminds us that Jeremy Bentham was no slouch with a neologism himself…

It’s pretty amazing. Shakespeare really shaped the English language!

So did Jeremy Bentham. He’s best-known for inventing utilitarianism and the panopticon [see here], but he also coined the words:

    • Minimize
    • International
    • Percentage
    • Pluralism
    • Monetary
    • Locating
    • Marginalize
    • Codify
    • The prefix ‘self-’
    • Maximize
    • The prefix ‘post-’
    • The prefix ‘infra-’
    • Exhaustive
    • Insurable
    • Collaborator
    • Alleviating
    • Unaffordable
    • Exclusionary
    • Inexclusively
    • Antagonising
    • Deontology
    • Disambiguation
    • Eudemonic
    • Evidentiary
    • Characterizable
    • Perusable
    • Preferability
    • Remediation
    • Astuteness
    • Uncalculating
    • Uncoerced
    • Unbridgeable
    • Subvariety

You can find even more Bentham coinages at my source [lots more].

And as if all that weren’t enough, Bentham kind of invented jogging:

Bentham appears to have been a regular jogger—or, as he put it, ‘circumgyrater’. According to the journalist George Wheatley, who stayed with the eighty-one year-old Bentham in March 1831, before both breakfast and dinner Bentham would take ‘a few turns in the garden, which … he calls circumgyrating’, which Wheatley described as a ‘trotting or taking up a kind of trotting step’.

    Joanna Pruchniewska

So not only are you quoting Bentham, you might be mimicking him too…

The second-greatest coiner of English words? “You are quoting Bentham.”

More coinage (and source of the image at the top): “Coined Words Acknowledged.”

As we commend contrivers, we might recall that it was on this date in 1940 that another colossal coiner of phrases appeared: the Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies animated short “A Wild Hare”– the first “official” Bugs Bunny cartoon– premiered (though long-time readers will recall that Bugs [or at least, his prototype] made his inaugural screen appearance two years earlier).  Directed by Tex Avery, “A Wild Hare” was nominated for an Academy Award.

  3. Mr. Newberger’s AI Funnies : World Cup Photo Bomb

Spain has won the World Cup. The players are lined up. The trophy is ready. All they need is one official championship photo. Unfortunately, Donald Trump is absolutely determined to be in it. What follows is a series of increasingly ridiculous attempts to sneak, disguise, charm, and force his way into the front row—while Gianni Infantino desperately tries to protect the dignity of the occasion. Think presidential vanity meets Bugs Bunny logic.

  7. Culture ought not to stand still. Old guys gotta learn to keep up. But what an amazing set of symbols, now mostly lost, were the Bugs Bunny cartoons. The Trickster versus the god of Blind Impotent Rage. Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam were adversaries worthy only of richly symbolic defeat.

Bugs Bunny Against the Machine. The monolithic factory symbolized by the staccato dissonant arpeggio repeated in common time. The Trickster throws a spanner into the works of capitalism and forces his truce upon the State from the bottom up.

Bugs Bunny In Drag taught me so much about the gender straightjacket, about men and lust. Benny Hill hit the same bullseye but with nary a single grain of the same wisdom. Nor of subtlety. Eyelashes and lipstick work even better than bare breasts.

  9. Fun fact. I used to belong to the #ChessClub in high school. I memorized what moves my pieces could make, then would beat my opponents by NOT using standard chess strategies, instead just doing some random move that would throw them off, allowing me to win. I never took chess very seriously either and had fun with it -- something else that would piss off my opponents. I think there's some sort of life-lesson there. Heh. No wonder #BugsBunny was one of my heroes growing up. He had a knack for throwing off his opponents as well (though I think giving my opponent a big wet kiss would violate protocol. Though I might have done that with one of my exes when we played chess. 💋 ).

  11. The first appearance of Bugs Bunny was on this day in 1938. "Porky's Hare Hunt"

While Porky's Hare Hunt was the first Warner Bros. cartoon to feature a Bugs Bunny-like rabbit, "A Wild Hare", directed by Tex Avery and released on July 27, 1940, is widely considered to be the first official Bugs Bunny cartoon. It is the first film where both Elmer Fudd and Bugs (both redesigned by Bob Givens) are shown in their fully developed forms as hunter and tormentor, respectively; the first in which Mel Blanc uses what would become Bugs' standard voice; and the first in which Bugs uses his catchphrase, "What's up, Doc?" "A Wild Hare" was a huge success in theaters and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cartoon Short Subject.

  13. Wait!

Y'all didn't tell me that my only hero, and much of the rest of the Looney Tunes lineup, is in Coyote vs. ACME!

    Now, I'm interested.

I'm not a Wile E fan, but I hate the Roadrunner and its evil corporate backers.
