I've been a little less active lately, it's been a busy season here at the Ranch! Though, I am excited to share that we just shared our free October newsletter: Eating Ethically on a Shoestring Budget. In it we share some important information and ideas about eating more ethically without falling for greenwashing and ridiculous price tags on, let's face it, products that probably aren't *that* much better than the cheaper alternatives.
Share it with a friend if it helps you out, because that helps us out!

Apparently MUD Jeans these days (since 2016) has nothing to do with the old company. All the #jeans are made from post-consumer #recycled material or organically farmed cotton. It's not a worker-owned cooperative, but at least it's a B Corporation. They claim to be trying but seems like it's still pretty bad working conditions for production.
Anyway, that's the best I could do without wearing myself out on research. Buying jeans is always stressful af.

Local Food
Can public institutions procure food locally? How do land grabs impact local food movements? What are the local food discourses in Canada? What are the ethical considerations of eating locally?

Some ideas for things we can do (alone & together) instead of just doomscrolling and posting links to bad news.
Where we earn, spend & invest our money matters.
Further ideas welcome!

It's "that" time of year so I'm just here to say that buying second hand is more sustainable than buying new EVEN if the company you want to buy new from claims to be sustainable.

The fashion industry is bad for the environment, built upon exploitative labor, and really only designed for a narrow (slim, able-bodied) group of people.
@damemagazine’s Nicole Froio talked to crafters who are documenting their process on social media to show followers how much time and effort goes into making clothes — and therefore what’s being sacrificed if they opt for fast fashion.

I wouldn’t normally link to Youtube (even if it is via Invidious) but this chat between Mike Berners-Lee and @GreenRupertRead on ways of tackling the #polycrisis is worth the 40 minutes of lughole infiltration. 👂

Every time you can avoid going to the grocery chain store for your food, you are keeping money out of the hands of those running this genocidal economy.
Today, my small act of resistance is making preserves. There is a loquat tree growing next to my house that produces pounds of fruit every year with little help from me. Make use of what you have. Go on a consumer fast.

If you need some new clothes - t-shirts, undies, shoes, etc - there’s a big discount happening at Etiko at the moment.
They’re an ethical + sustainable clothing retailer, based in #Melbourne #Australia and make good quality stuff. I’ve been wearing their stuff for years now.
The discount is to clear out existing stock as they make some changes to their products and operations.
Don’t buy it if you don’t need it, but if you do need some things and can afford it, consider buying from these folks.

Is fair-trade a meaningless "social washing" (think green washing but the social and worker justice version of it) label?
Anyone know anything about the legitimacy of fair-trade?
I consistently buy my coffee and chocolate with fair trade labels but would like to know if I've been tricked.
Please boost. Would like to hear from someone who is knowledgeable in this.

OK, so. "No #EthicalConsumption under #Capitalism." We all know that one. What it means is that any product getting to you, produced, traded, and sold to you in a capitalistic system can not be completely free of the systemic problems of a capitalistic system, like exploitation and ecocide.
However, that does not mean that you can not avoid a specific evil not inherent to a capitalistic system by avoiding a specific product.
Like, for a completely random example, merchandise and media associated with a specific IP, where the owner made clear that buying into that IP is taken as endorsement of the views of said author.
That is on top of the inherently unethical ways of capitalistic production and consumption, so a defeated sigh and the mantra "No ethical consumption..." does not absolve of that. -
"there is no ethical consumption under capitalism"
guess what buddy: consumer choice has a huge has a huge impact on the world, regardless of whether it's 'capitalist' or not. moral behaviour is always about picking the better choice over the worse one, not about some arbitrary threshold of purity.
"no ethical consumption under #capitalism" is a stupid meme and you should stop proliferating it.
