  4. What Empire Cannot Erase

We are watching, once again, what empire does: not only to bodies, but to the long memory of a people; to the libraries and sacred sites; to art, language, and the ruins that hold the oldest threads of human spiritual inquiry.

We are thinking of the civilization that gave us Rumi, Hafez, Omar Khayyam, Forough Farrokhzad — mystics and rebels and lovers of paradox who understood something about the human soul that we are still, centuries later, trying to catch up to.

This gathering is an invitation to come together: to read poetry aloud, to hear from #Iranian voices, to sit with grief and beauty together rather than alone.

We will work with #political and #moral vocabulary shaped by Iranian thinkers such as Ali Shariati, who wrote against domination, spiritual emptiness, and the violence of imposed power.

We will make space for what doesn’t fit into headlines or talking points—the complexity of empire, the difference between a government and its people, the #authoritarian forces at work not only abroad but here at home. We also gather with the political inheritance of those who taught generations to resist domination and spiritual emptiness, including Ali Shariati.

  6. "Yes, the information technology boom was most certainly one. That era, when Cisco Systems was asking the public “Are you ready?” for the Internet Age, was extraordinary. For six straight years starting in 1995, US nonresidential fixed investment — a broad category that spans structures, equipment and intellectual property — contributed more than a full percentage point to overall GDP growth. Such a thing cannot be found in US statistics going back to 1930. And at the start of that process, in December 1995, Greenspan told his fellow monetary policymakers he had a hypothesis that surging investment in computing and telecommunications technology was bringing down cost pressures. He said that should be incorporated into how the Fed set interest rates, and marshaled the panel behind a reduction.

But the other element of Greenspan’s observation was the importance of globalization (...) He noted that it could take a decade to be sure about the disinflationary process he suspected was underway. And when he had that extra decade of data to analyze, he emphasized the importance of bringing China and the former Soviet-bloc economies into global supply chains.

“Over the past decade or more, the gradual assimilation of these new entrants into the world’s free-market trading system has restrained the rise of unit labor costs in much of the world and, hence, has helped to contain inflation,” then-Chair Greenspan testified to Congress in November 2005. In his 2007 memoir, he flagged that “China is by far the dominant contributor to this trend.” By then, his bigger worry was that the disinflationary impact of the integration of the Chinese workforce was coming to an end. As it turned out, his concern that globalization had run its course was premature."

  7. "... the very success of globalisation, the very success of free market capitalism, in creating global wealth - transferring jobs from rich countries to poor countries quite often ..."

This is either ignorance or propaganda. What corporate-driven globalisation did was *move* wealth, not create it. Mainly from working people to the 1%; inequality and the billionaire population have both increased rapidly since the 1980s.

OMG! A wild ride… “Based off the newest tranche of emails and texts released by the Justice Department this weekend, Epstein, at the very least, believed that he was orchestrating the downfall of the global order in the 2010s. In June 2016, he emailed venture capitalist, early Facebook investor, and Palantir founder Peter Thiel, writing, “Brexit, just the beginning.” He then laid out the most succinct mission statement we currently have for what Epstein was trying to accomplish. “Return to tribalism,” he wrote. “Counter to globalization. Amazing new alliances. You and I both agreed zero interest rates were too high, and as I said in your office. Finding things on their way to collapse was much easier than finding the next bargain.” 😮

Read that again: “Epstein… believed… he was orchestrating the downfall of the global order”.😐

Been wondering ever since I read that terse email “Brexit, just the beginning” implying that #Epstein & #Thiel think they caused it. Now this rationale. ☝️

Can this really be so? Or is this #billionaires delusion? How could we know, how could we test for the truth of this hypothesis?🤔

  13. "Q: How would you describe what the Trump administration’s vision of American power is?

A: It’s much more modest, at some level. They don’t believe in Manifest Destiny at a global level. They may have some vision of American greatness and certainly a blunt patriotism.
    (...)
They don’t do golf clubs as well as he’d like, and their palaces aren’t as good as the ones in the Emirates. Really, it’s a bit of an embarrassment.

To get to a more serious kind of vein, I think they think of America as embattled. They also have this extraordinary narrative of the United States as the loser in globalization.

You can break that down — Sullivan will tell a story about the American working class as having been victimized. The Trump people will talk, but it’s not very plausible because that’s not who he in any reasonable sense represents.

I had the dubious pleasure of chairing a panel with the C.E.O. of Bank of America and C.E.O. of E.Y. and Rachel Reeves of the British government and Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Commerce secretary, the key guy behind the tariffs. He, in fact referred to himself as the hammer gleefully — the enforcer of the Trump administration.

And journalists had the temerity to ask the chairman of the Bank of America, the C.E.O. of Bank of America: Can you really agree with the commerce secretary’s characterizations of globalization having been bad for America?

The obvious answer is: Who are you kidding?

They genuinely seem to believe that the American state — because they’re very confused about budgets and who earns what money for where and what tariffs do and the relationship between the private sector and the public sector is quite blurred in their mind — in some general sense, the vital bodily juices of America were sapped by entering into an openness to the world that extends from trade to globalized universities to large-scale migration."
