  1. CES (Consumer Technology Association) 2026 isn't just about gadgets.
It's about where technology meets humanity.
IEEE - Advancing Technology For Humanity .

I had the honor of speaking with Mary Ellen Randall, President and CEO of IEEE, from Las Vegas during CES this week.

#IEEE — the world's largest technical professional society — has been around for over 140 years. 500,000 members. 190 countries. And a mission that cuts through the noise: advancing #technology for the benefit of #humanity.
Not for hype. Not for quarterly earnings. For humanity.

We talked about Jensen Huang receiving the 2026 IEEE Medal of Honor. Yes, #NVIDIA built the chips powering the AI revolution, but the recognition goes deeper — it's about the entire ecosystem enabling breakthroughs in #healthcare, autonomous systems, drug discovery, and beyond.

Mary Ellen shared something that stuck with me. She sees this moment as a new Renaissance. Like Florence in the 1400s — painters collaborating with sculptors, scientists exchanging ideas across disciplines — we're at an inflection point where everything is intersecting.

(I wonder why a reference to the Rinascimento resonated with me 😅)

The difference? We have the tools to do it globally, instantly.
But speed without ethics is reckless. IEEE is developing standards for #AIbias prevention, certification programs for responsible development, even protections for young people online. The slow, unglamorous work that lets innovation happen safely.

"Engineering with purpose" — that's the phrase she kept returning to.
In a world obsessed with moving fast and breaking things, it's refreshing to talk with people committed to building things that last. And building them right.

  2. A significant EU reform landed recently, reshaping how we safeguard elections, media, civil society, and the information space.

We’ve published an in-depth analysis that connects the dots across the Democracy Shield, the Civil Society Strategy, and the deeper cultural shifts beneath them.

  3. 🎙️ Here is what in my news today! :)

A new transmission from Musing On Society and Technology

🌀 From Cassette Tapes and Phrasebooks to AI Real-Time Translations

There’s something beautifully awkward about trying to understand someone in a language that’s not your own.

I’ve been dreaming of real-time translation since I was a kid — not flying cars, not robot butlers (though I’d take one to fold laundry). Just the idea of truly understanding someone, in their language.

Now, with AI-powered translations in #Google Meet, we’re there.

    It’s seamless. Flawless. Magical.

    And then… it sucks.

    Like, existentially, beautifully sucks.

Because while machines can now speak for us, we may be forgetting how to actually understand each other.

As a proud Gen X analog soul, I remember the rewinds, the mixtapes, the Maxell cassettes, the static. I felt language — in the waiting, the effort, the emotion.

Now? Everything’s fast. Clean. Automated. Translated. But at what cost?

This isn’t just about tech. It’s about humanity, connection, and the spaces in between. We don’t live in 0s and 1s — we live in the gray, the glitch, the hybrid.

  4. We need a workable system for reputation management that is

    - decentralized and transparent in its operation

    - robust, and immune to being gamed [see the first item...]

    - multidimensional, since people's strengths and weaknesses, and impacts on others, vary with type

    - discounts past behavior in favor of more the more recent

I think we have evidence that reputation management works in small groups, villages, families—so the challenge is how to apply our new tools for information management to our new, larger, social groups.

We need to apply new technologies to our new circumstances, to scale up our collective awareness and decision-making to match the exponentially increasing flood of data and connections.

And not by delegating to an independent agency such as an AI, or a 'trusted' leader or organization, or to an electoral system that fails on many of the criteria listed above.

Next, a system for modeling our values, multilayered and fine-grained, with increasing coherence over increasing context of meaning, and increasing scope of consequences…
