"Jupiter and Io," Antonio de Correggio, 1520-40.
Correggio (1489-1534) was an Italian High Renaissance painter known for his very sensual and suggestive works, and for prefiguring the Baroque style. Despite his rather louche reputation, he also did a large number of religious works.
This particular work was one of a series of paintings that interpreted various liaisons of the god Jupiter, as taken from Ovid's "Metamorphises," and all were quite sensual and erotic. They were commissioned by Frederico II of Gonzaga, then ruler of Mantua, but were given to the Holy Roman Emperor, possibly under duress.
The image is unabashedly erotic, to the point that later artists would sometimes paint a miniature version in a room to indicate that the owner was a prostitute or other person of loose morals.
Correggio died young; reportedly he was a lonely, introverted man; little is known of his early life or training, and there are no records of a marriage or children. The passionate sensuality of his works hint at quite an inner life, though.

"Fulfillment (Lovers)," Gustav Klimt, 1910-11.
Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the guiding lights of the Vienna Secession movement, which gave birth to what we know today as Art Nouveau.
This work is actually a pattern for a mosaic. From 1905-11 he was involved in installing a mosaic frieze in the dining room of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, Belgium. The central motif was the Tree of Life, which forms a backdrop for several figures, including the embracing couple we see here.
Klimt's works could often be frankly erotic; not smutty, to be sure, but openly depicting romantic and sexual passion in ways that some found almost pornographic at the time. Today, they're tame, but still evocative.
Mosaic work also fitted Klimt's style; quite a few of his paintings look like mosaics in two dimensions. While there are aspects of this that are frankly traditional, the overall execution, with flat areas of pattern with no attempt to make them seem three-dimensional, marks the beginning of the transition to modernism.

Some of the style choices don't work for me, especially at the start of the #movie, but others are very well done and add to the mystery and eerie tone.
The #eroticism is palpable and often veers into inappropriate, but that's key to the plot.

Diving back into a (slow, inept) parallel reading of the "The Pleasure of the Text" and «Le Plaisir du texte», we come to and let pass unnoticed various sentences which are rather delightful if not obviously true (or obviously not true), and note only

Ah, this is fun: «au moment où il jouit» might, given the context, go into English as "at the moment that he comes" (or even "cums"); the French verb «jouir» is ambiguous between "enjoy" and "orgasm" just as the English "to come" is ambiguous between "move towards" and "orgasm".
Google translate primly renders it as "enjoys"; Miller spells it out again, as "at the very moment of his orgasm, his bliss".
In fact this edition has a small "Note on the Text" all about how French, unlike English, has words for the erotic that are neither, as he puts it, coarse nor clinical. How educational!
