  1. I'm recommending this #educational & #historical #documentary series.

[ On 8 May 2025, the world marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Allied victory brought an end to Adolf Hitler's 12-year rule. Journal entries from Hitler's supporters and opponents offer insight into life in #Nazi #Germany.

This four-part documentary series centers on eight individuals and their families. Each kept a #diary recording their daily lives, experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Illustrations accompany the entries to bring them to life, giving these sequences the look of a graphic novel.

The eight diarists lived scattered across Germany. They came from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and #political factions. Some become fervent supporters of the Nazi regime, others opposed it, and some were marginalized or persecuted. Several of the journal span the entire 12 years of #Hitler 's rule. But some fall silent after a given time. "Hitler's Reich - A German Journal" features no expert testimonies; instead, the #diaries stand alone, as personal records of the time in which they were written.

In the entries, we find descriptions of moments of happiness, youth, dance lessons, longing and love; but also of the first - still hesitant - Nazi salute, #Gestapo surveillance, "Aryan certificates," hunger, and the threat of deportation. They capture a time when many looked the other way, remained silent, or became complicit. They speak of what it felt like when the war "came home," the fear of nights spent in bunkers, and the hope of survival. The diarists wrote with the urgency of the present, not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Their stories reflect the rise, reign, and eventual downfall of the Nazi regime.

  2. Recommended #documentary about the global networks of WS fascists / right wing terror groups.

    World White Hate.

    m.youtube.com/watch?v=zV4H4R3Y

[ Filmmaker Dirk Laabs' research shows that soldiers and veterans pose a particularly great danger - in the USA, France, Germany, Spain and Russia. Former and active soldiers network globally and are potential assassins. Right-wing extremist mercenaries also represent a danger. This group is potentially even more threatening - due to their combat experience, access to weapons and professional networks. WORLD WHITE HATE unveils the parallels and overlaps between these very different right-wing extremist groups.

How can right-wing terror be countered and stopped? What can be done to protect democratic society, people and state institutions from right-wing terror?

Filmed in the UK, Scandinavia and Brazil, WORLD WHITE HATE charts the development of the threat posed by right-wing terror. It is exacerbated by populist politicians such as Donald Trump and radical right-wing parties.

The documentary WORLD WHITE HATE by Dirk Laabs analyzes the mechanisms of radicalization and discusses possible counter-strategies for democratic societies. The central question remains: “How can we win the digital and real battle against increasing violence from the right?” ]

  5. War in Lebanon - Beirut's first responders on the front line | DW Documentary

    youtube.com/watch?v=v2WAPA7NgV…

Daily airstrikes hit the southern suburbs of the #Lebanese capital #Beirut. The #Israeli #military says they are aimed at destroying #Hezbollah command centers and weapons storage facilities - located in a suburb, home to several hundred thousand people.

The Israeli strikes are also taking a growing toll on the civilian population, with hundreds left dead or injured, and around 1.2 million people now internally displaced. This #film features #firefighters and rescue workers belonging to a non-Hezbollah-affiliated civil protection organization. They put their lives on the line as they work around the clock - extinguishing one fire after the next and recovering the injured and the dead from the rubble left by airstrikes.

Whenever Israeli drones are seen approaching, they have to cease operations and seek safety. A team of journalists films the #firefighters at work in the devastated southern suburbs of Beirut. The firefighters take them on their scooters to immediately document the damage inflicted on streets in a part of town considered a Hezbollah stronghold.

With camera crews normally prohibited here, the team follows doctors and first-responders as they see to the injured casualties. The film shows the widespread suffering among a civilian population living on the front line in the ongoing #conflict.

Around 1,200 people in #Israel were killed in the #Hamas terror attacks on 7 October 2023. The Israeli leadership's war against the terrorist organization continues to this day. According to the Hamas-run health authority in the #Gaza Strip, over 43,000 #Palestinians have subsequently been killed there - over half of them reportedly women and children. Hamas is allied with Hezbollah, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the #EU and has been launching almost daily rocket attacks on Israel for the past 12 months.

  7. Rescuing orphaned baby elephants in Kenya | #DW #Documentary

    youtube.com/watch?v=3mrcRgUBiV

    > Naomi Leshongoro and Pauline Leriong are #Kenya's first elephant nannies. At the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, the two women take in sick and orphaned elephant calves. They care for the baby elephants, then release them back into their natural habitat.

As is true elsewhere in Africa, the last thirty years have seen many elephants in northern #Kenya fall victim to poachers, who hunt them for bush meat and ivory. The decimation of these grass-eating pachyderms also upsets the local ecosystem’s fragile balance.

In 1995, the locals in Samburu started a unique initiative. They founded the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust with the aim of restoring natural biodiversity in the region. ("Namunyak" translates as "blessed place"). In 2016, the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary was established to help with the region’s biodiversity efforts. Here, sick and orphaned elephant calves are cared for as they grow up. Later, they are released back into their natural habitat.

The project demonstrates a new vision of species conservation and coexistence between humans and wild animals. Other aspects of the project include educating the population about environmental issues and integrating women into the world of work.

Naomi Leshongoro and Pauline Leriong are pioneers in their role: they care for the elephant calves and prepare them to return to the wild. At a time when water shortages and drought are threatening people, domestic and wild animals, and ecosystems alike, these women and their helpers are tirelessly working to contribute to a more sustainable future.

  8. Putin’s fleet - Russian espionage in the Baltic Sea | DW Documentary

    youtube.com/watch?v=Br3K93-z6P…

Western intelligence services are warning of the threat of a #Russian shadow war against #European states. #Germany is possibly one of the targets of this hybrid warfare. Authorities have observed suspicious ship movements in the #Baltic Sea.

Russian "research ships" keep on appearing unexpectedly in offshore windfarms, in #submarine exercise areas and above gas #pipelines... and off the #German coast, in the Baltic Sea. What is the vessels’ secret mission? Why do they often travel with their location transmitters turned off and armed special forces on board? And why is it so difficult for police and #military to do anything about these mysterious ships? An international journalist team takes a closer look at #Russia’s suspected spy fleet and sets out to decode their morse code messages.

  9. Georgia votes on its future: Where is the country headed? | DW Documentary

    youtube.com/watch?v=eUsvBgzisH…

Between #Russian pressure and #European influence: #Georgia is at a crossroads. How is the country faring ahead of parliamentary #elections?

Rarely has so much been at stake for this #Caucasus nation as in the parliamentary #elections on 26 October. The governing "Georgian Dream” party aims to bring the country even closer to #Moscow’s sphere of influence. The divided opposition, on the other hand, is trying to win back the people’s trust with a pro-European course. Many fear that if the current ruling party wins, the nation could drift into a dictatorship. But the young generation is pushing back, among them 18-year-old Nanuka #Mestvirishvili. She talks to people who’ve lost faith in politics about #democracy and #disinformation. Who will set the country’s future course?

  10. The forgotten displaced from Abkhazia | #DW Documentary

It has been more than 30 years since fighting broke out between #Georgia and #Abkhazia. Some of those whom the conflict displaced found refuge in a former Georgian sanatorium: the Hotel Metalurg. Now, they’re under pressure to leave again.

It was one of the bloodiest conflicts that followed the collapse of the #Soviet Union. #Abkhazia wanted to secede from Georgia, and expelled almost all ethnic Georgians from the small region on the Black Sea. Thousands moved to #Tskaltubo, an abandoned tourist resort known for its Soviet-era luxury sanatoriums. Over the past three decades, most of the community’s men have moved away, leaving behind many women and children. The buildings they live in have fallen into disrepair, including the Hotel Metalurg itself. Now, there are fears they will be driven out of what has become their second home. Many, especially the older residents, still hope to one day return to their real home of #Abkhazia.

  11. Hong Kong: Chinese control and the future of protest | #DW Documentary

In #HongKong, protests have fallen silent. The Chinese state is more restrictive than ever. Back in 2019, artists were among those who took to the streets to demonstrate against the curtailing of basic rights. How are they doing, five years on?

Unlike many of his contemporaries, multimedia artist Samson #Young chose to remain in Hong Kong rather than going into exile. Young plays with codes and hidden references in his complex art installations. Filmmaker Kiwi Chow also stayed. He sold the rights to an internationally acclaimed documentary about the 2019 protest movement to a friend outside the country.

Others felt they could no longer stay in Hong Kong, like Kacey Wong, who now lives and works in #Taiwan. Despite their different paths, these artists all ask themselves the same question: Will Hong Kong ever be as free as it was before the protests, or will Beijing’s grip get even tighter?

  12. How can ships become cleaner? | #DW Documentary

Soot, particle pollution and heavy fuel oil: freighters and cruise liners are real climate killers. It’s high time for a change of course on the seas. The film shows how both #innovations and tried-and-tested ideas can make shipping cleaner.

Container ships supply people all over the world with goods, while #cruises attract millions of passengers every year. But ships also cause around three percent of global #greenhouse gas emissions.

This is despite the fact that emission-free #maritime #trade has been possible for thousands of years - thanks to the wind. "We need to get back to sailing ships," says Captain Andreas Lackner. Fifteen years ago, the #Austrian and two friends put a sailing cargo ship into operation. The "Tres Hombres" has been working since 2010, transporting up to 40 tons of goods across the seas without an engine. The clipper ship takes cocoa and rum from the Caribbean to Europe, or 20,000 bottles of organic wine from La #Rochelle to #Copenhagen. "We’re closing the gap between fairly paid producers of organic goods and conscious consumers," says Lackner.

Others have also rediscovered the power of the wind. Ralf Oltmanns from East Frisia sailed the world's #oceans at the age of 16, before founding an advertising agency. Now, 30 years later, the passionate sailor has developed a new twist on a century-old propulsion system in order to make large ships cleaner. The Flettner rotor, named after its inventor, Anton Flettner, is a type of sailing machine: a cylindrical structure that rotates in the wind to generate thrust. Oltmanns has used the original invention to create a modern product. "Depending on the size of the rotor and the wind conditions, a freighter can save between 5 and 25 percent on fuel," the 63-year-old calculates. The rotor could make both cargo and passenger ships more climate-friendly. Anna Braren was convinced by his idea: Her shipping company equipped its first ship with the Flettner rotor in 2021.

With countless innovations and strict regulations, #Norway is leading the way in the transition to emission-free #shipping. The #Scandinavians are focusing on #electric motors and hybrid #technologies. #Climate change is already being felt in the #Norwegian Arctic - another reason why the government is getting serious. From 2026, only emission-free ships will be allowed to sail in #Norway's most beautiful fjords. And climate-friendly #tourist ships are already sailing along the traditional postal ship route.

  15. Could the blood of camel species help save us from serious diseases? | DW Documentary

What’s known as #nanobodies from the blood of #camels are at the heart of a #medical revolution. Due to their special properties, these nanobodies can be used in a variety of ways, whether in the fight against #infectious diseases, in #cancer therapy or in the diagnosis of #Alzheimer's disease.

Small #antibodies with a big impact: camel blood contains #immunological superpowers. It all began in the 1990s with a chance #discovery at the Free #University of #Brussels: students used #dromedary blood in an experiment and came across previously unknown antibodies. The university #scientists discovered that these antibodies are present in all camel species. And, they have amazing properties. Small fragments can separate from the base of the antibody -- without causing any damage and while retaining their full binding capacity.

This was the discovery of the nanobody: a tiny, extremely robust #molecule which, due to its small size, can also penetrate areas too small to be targeted by complete antibodies. The nanobody, however, can attach itself with extremely high precision to pathogenic antigens.

This discovery triggered a wave of innovations and shook up the big #pharmaceutical companies. In 2018, the first drug based on nanobodies went on the market, designed to combat an autoimmune #blood clotting disorder. Numerous potential applications were developed within a very short space of time. Whether in the fight against cancer, in Alzheimer's diagnostics or to kill #pathogenic #bacteria - the success of camel antibodies has been so resounding that many #medical research centers now have their own herds of llamas or alpacas.

But why do members of the camel family in particular have such immunological superpowers? With the help of camel experts and microbiologists, the documentary sheds light on the surprising abilities of camels and the medical revolution of nanobodies.
