Not voting, as I was born #disabled

In the #blind community, I was #sighted, although I was born with #cataracts and have always been #LegallyBlind. My dad was blind, and navigated everywhere with his #whitecane. He ws part of an #advocacy #organiztion, and he traveled around the #US by air. His sister, my Aunt Buffy, was a #COBOL #programmer for Sears in #Chicago. She took me to her work once. We rode the #El with her #GuideDog, Ginger.

This meant that it was tough to get away with "Blind kids can't. . ." unless I'd actually *tried*..

  5. One #accessibility issue I mention frequently is web designers, presumably for aesthetic reasons, making low-contrast colour choices. It also frequently goes along with selecting a #font so small that only people with excellent vision (and no #presbyopia) can read them, even if the #contrast were higher.

Here's an example. I'm not pointing out the software in question, even though you could identify it easily, because this isn't a dunk on that project, specifically.

This is the reference #documentation for an API, a small excerpt from the navigation links that run down a column on the left side of the page. The #text is darkish #grey on a lighter grey background. The contrast is terrible, particularly ignoring the highlighted entry because that's bolded as the current selection.

If you have #cataracts or any other #vision problem, you're going to have trouble with this. But it gets worse.

That text is 7 pixels high. On my monitors, it's 3 mm high. Ridiculous. Note that if you have fine motor-control problems or use alternative input devices, these are also extremely difficult to click on.

Here's the kicker: for this site, I have Firefox set to #scale the text up to 133%. That 7 pixels / 3 mm is *after* enlarging it.

#Web folks, please try to remember that not everyone is a twenty-something able-bodied person with zero accessibility issues.

  11. This is fascinating & really educational:

This site allows you to either use a sliding scale or put in hex codes to define #colour for both background and text, as well as determine text font size and thickness, and every combination is graded for #accessibility for people with #cataracts, #glaucoma, and various kinds of #ColourBlindness.

You can 'see' how that person would see your website.

A fail means that the #color combo offers some visual strain and should be avoided if possible.

  13. 8 days post-op. Here's what I've notice

Depth perception has greatly improved. I wasn't aware that this was something that was going to happen. Thrilling.

Noticed font size on my phone is larger than I need it to be.

    My distance vision is great.

But also- I'm still healing. Yesterday I noticed weird flashes of light as I walked down the hall at work, everytime I passed under a light fixture.

I have a secondary cataract starting in the eye. Already. 🙄

6 days until the left eye.

  15. A sad day. Next #Sunday we were supposed to be going to the #aoarena in #Manchester to see the Gladiators Live Tour. Alas my eyes are that bad now I’d not be able to navigate to my seat or even see the show…. So cancelled and put the tickets up for sale.
I was looking forward to it so much.

  17. Longing to get back to drawing, I miss it, hopefully not too long now. Cataract op on Friday. This is Sir Lenny Henry.

  18. In some good news, the missus just visited her eye specialist post-second eye op (cataract removal) and she now has 20/20 vision in both eyes; able to read the bottom line on eye charts.

    I'm jealous.

  19. Of all the ways I could have taken after my father, cataracts in my early 50s would not have been my first choice at all.

It's VERY hard for me to ask for help and just getting a drive to get checked combined with my general anxiety resulted in putting it off so long that both cataracts are ready, well, past ready, for surgery.

On a similar "hate to ask" point, I've got a coinsurance out of pocket looming. If you want to defray those costs, a print or a digital download from my Etsy would be a great form of support. Or you can message me for other options.

  20. I've been to Boots opticians this morning and been tested for Posterior Capsule Opacification, and yep tested positive.#PCO #cataracts

It means skin has been growing over the back of my replacement lenses and yep I need YAG laser treatment to remove it.

I'm being referred on a priority basis and hopefully will get an appointment in between 3-6 weeks. In the interim, I'm not allowed to drive :(

At least I'll get sorted out pretty quickly. Sigh.......

  22. I found out last week that the weird vision issue in one of my eyes is infact a cataract. I’ve been processing this for a few days, and I’m really just a bit numb.

I’m sad that my eye is broken with no advance warning. Surgery may be an option eventually, but it’s not bad enough yet - I am only 40 and the surgical fix doesn’t last indefinitely.

I don’t really know why I’m putting this out there, but if anyone has any non-scary cataract stories I’d love to hear from you.

  24. CW: spoonie, eyes, fibro flare

Had an eye exam today. It's been over two years since my last exam. Nothing major, but for the first time ever, I've been told that I have the beginning of cataracts. Just something to check regularly.

Still can't see clearly, and it's been almost two hours since the dilation. Also not that unusual. Ordered new (progressive) glasses.

And my fibro is flaring. I was out about two hours.

  25. #cataracts A good ‘clear' eye day today. 13 days in after the surgery on the left eye and the vision continues to improve.

These screen shots are taken from the Kindle App on the iPhone. Prior to the surgery the larger text was the level I could read, this morning I could just read the smallest text the app can display.

Okay I admit I could not comfortably read at that size but at least I could actually see it!

The vision in the eye is still varying day on day, but significant improvements have been noted overall.

  26. Well poo it looks like I have #cataracts I’ve got my pre-assessment appointment on the 7th of July.
Terrified of the thought of eye surgery but the possibility of not needing glasses is awesome.

Squid, an #African penguin based at #Birdworld in #Farnham, #Surrey, developed #cataracts as a chick

Her friend, named Penguin, steers #Squid around their enclosure, helping when she gets disorientated at feeding time

  31. Some weeks ago I was informed that I had #cataracts in one eye, I thought I would go blind soon, but today I was meeting the eye clinic to get info about operation, they Informed me that I have it on both eyes.

I have #Aspergers and automatically move my head when hands are on my face so the operation will be done under anesthetic, so they want to wait a bit over a year to do both eyes at the same time.

It a common operation that give clear lens but not fix vision, so glasses will be needed

  32. Debunking a myth:

    Honey. Will. Not. Dissolve. Cataracts.

(In fact, added sugar potentially adds to the growth )
The peppermint oil & cayenne aren’t helpers either. & I’m hoping she is ingesting these, rather than putting in her eye.
    So what helps ?
Answer: Cataract removal surgery which takes under 10 minutes.

Doctors don’t have all the answers, but they do have a decent amount in their area of expertise, try to keep some perspective when attempting to make decisions. Well-meaning friends & the internet aren’t your best options. #ophthalmology #eyes #fediverse #cataracts

I don't object to dead tree books; I struggle to read them due to my visual #disability.

Books are #books and people should #read.

The why I read #audiobooks is below. If you were looking for an argument about planetary impact by book format, that's down the hall and on your left.

If this isn't the answer you were looking for, you can go about your business. Move along, move along.

I was born with #cataracts and I grew up with the #TalkingBook program through the American Printing House ... as an adult, I was kicked off of government assistance due to my sight measuring at 20/50 (this was an error; see below. I live in #Texas and ...). The error is, in restoring my sight to low-end normal, they cleaned out the innards of my eyes. I have no organic lenses and no support structures that could accommodate implants. All the ability to focus is in my eyeglasses. It's like having a telescope that you can't adjust - I have "distance" vision at the top and "reading" in the bifocal insert. And they're a special type of lens that even my workplace's vision plan does not cover. So yes, I technically see 20/50, but only what I'm directly looking at. To look at anything, I have to turn my entire head.

  36. Pleased to have made it through an #EyeTest with little change to my #prescription and best of all still no sign of #cataracts or #glaucoma despite 26 years of permanent #steroids. Also relieved as someone severely #immunosuppressed that the #optician and other staff were wearing #masks thus protecting themselves and patients. #NHS #Eyes
