"Water Lilies," Claude Monet, c. 1915.
Y'all know Monet. His water lily paintings occupied the last few decades of his life, all done in the garden of his home in Giverny. He was depressed after the deaths of his wife and son, but also was beginning to suffer from vision problems due to cataracts.
When he finally underwent cataract surgery in 1923, he destroyed some of his earlier work or retouched it; I have no idea if that's the case here. Still, it's a lovely image...the water lilies on the water's surface juxtaposed against the reflection of a willow tree. It's a gorgeous image that actually challenged some notions at the time; the idea of including the tree's reflection, but not the tree itself, was a bit daring.

"Waterlilies, or The Water Lily Pond (Nympheas)," Claude Monet, 1904.
Y'all know Monet by now.
Monet was a passionate gardener and also quite the perfectionist. He obsessively arranged plants around the pond in his garden in Giverny for maximum reflection, would clip dead blossoms off the water lilies, and even trimmed the pads to keep them an ideal shape. Rumor has it he paid to have the road by his house paved because he hated the dust that settled on his flowers.
From the late 1800s to about 1910, he worked on hundreds of water lily paintings, often having several canvases by his side that he would switch out as the light changed, and then return to them the next day. Sometimes he'd find he overworked a canvas, and slash at it in frustration with his palette knife.
He did about three hundred paintings of his garden in that period. This is one of four water lily paintings from 1904 that have survived; the rest were discarded and destroyed.
I once read a book where a character says to another, "You're as jittery as a water lily in a Money painting!" and that made me laugh....

These water lilies in Battersea Park’s Old English Garden caught my eye after yesterday’s rain. The droplets on the lily pads created such beautiful textures against the still water. This walled garden is one of London’s quieter spaces - perfect for contemplation on a spring afternoon. Shot on iPhone, no filters needed when nature provides such perfect compositions.

I've had a Phonak bag hanging from the closet door in my office for over three years. That's where I put it when I brought my hearing aids home. Phonak is the brand of my hearing aids, and the bag contains some accessories, I believe. However, I no longer use the hearing aids that came in that bag, as I've gotten new ones which I've been using for several months. Perhaps this bag symbolizes how static my life has become. There is another bag, made of cloth, on the side chair in my bedroom. If I wait a few more years, I can add a third to my growing collection of Phonak bags. I think I'll do something life-changing with the bag today.

"Water Lilies," Ohara Koson, 1920s.
Ohara (1877-1945) was a pre-eminent painter and woodblock print designer of the late 18th and early 20th centuries. He belonged to the shin-hanga school, which revived the styles and aesthetics of the ukiyo-e school, but also was a major practitioner of the kachō-e subschool... kachō-e means "bird and flower". His specialty was images of the transitory moments of nature, like a bird that could fly away any second, or as we have here, beautiful blooms but with a pad that's been nibbled on.
He also did some historical work, with scenes from the Russo-Japanese war, and some satirical prints, like a delightful scene of sumo-wrestling frogs. But his kachō-e work is best-known. He sold well in the United States, even during the start of WWII.

"Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge," Claude Monet, 1899.
Monet needs no introduction, and this image hardly does, either. It's almost a cliche.
Monet was a passionate horticulturist, and this is an image of a water lily garden he cultivated, with a Japanese-style bridge he built himself.
Monet did a series of paintings of his garden, a dozen in all, that steadily became more abstract as he grew nearer to death.
This one, though, is almost THE quintessential Impressionist painting, reproduced everywhere and hanging on many people's walls. But it captures so many things loved by the Impressionists...light, nature, and Japanese influences (they LOVED Japanese art).

I'm considering purchasing a Lincoln Nautilus for travel. In fact, yesterday my wife and I went to the local Ford/Lincoln dealership and agreed to a deal. I haggle. The only problem, as it turns out, they didn't have the car and weren't sure that they could get hold of it; so, my wife and I left and told them to call if they have any break throughs. Of course, they tried sell me other cars, but couldn't spur my interest. I'm not having second thoughts, but I want what I want. I don't like going through the process of buying a new car. You talk to a sells person who can't make and decisions and must disappear behind the curtain to get a decision from the wizard.

In between writing, I like to paint. Sometimes, my favorites inspire me. One of those faves is Monet. I finished a mixed media of waterlilies tonight. Feeling pretty good about it. I like the blend and the flow. It’s a watercolor background with soft pastels and (minimally) some pastel pencil.

#NupharVariegatum is the yellow pond lily that's native to BC. The leaves are usually seen floating on water. The lake levels are very low right now. Hundreds of leaves are seen sticking out of water.
