Dismay! I bought "Westviking" by Farley Mowat a while ago and just started it, only to find that the appendices aren't included in the book; they only included a page with a URL and a QR code.
The intro suggests to read the appendices first and then references them in the text. How annoying.
Has anyone run into this before? Not something I would have thought to check for.

The planet money podcast is doing a series on publishing a book. This episode is on bookstore economics. It’s in my queue to listen to, but I listen to planet money podcast fairly regularly and they’re mostly good.

"The potential of AI-generated “literature” to turn a quick-and-easy profit ensures that readers will continue to encounter more of this content in the future, especially as AI’s large language models become more refined. Already, studies have shown that readers cannot easily distinguish AI-generated forgeries from original prose.
Last year, I had lunch with a screenwriter friend in Los Angeles. He told me that his colleagues are particularly nervous about the use of AI to produce sequels. Once you have an established cast of characters for a movie franchise like, say, “Fast & Furious,” audiences will likely see the next installment whether it’s written by man or machine.
Yet my own brief experiments with Claude give me at least some hope for the future of literary art. A chatbot like Claude might be able to absorb and analyze “a statistical average of all the human minds that came before it,” but without the input of actual human experience and sensibility, it is hard to envisage them ever producing true art.
Whether AI can produce the next George Orwell novel or essay remains to be seen. That it can and will churn out an increasing volume of popular fiction and screenplays like “Fast & Furious 25” seems less in doubt."

"Many of today’s popular new media forms—podcasts, Substacks, and social media feeds—rely for their techniques and their content on the old medium of long fact. The popular podcast Freakonomics Radio was derived from the host’s 2005 book. The pioneering Serial podcast used the techniques of narrative nonfiction writing in audio form—and emerged out of public radio’s This American Life, whose founder, Ira Glass, edited the 2007 anthology The New Kings of Nonfiction, which linked audio storytelling with literary storytelling of prior eras. Reams of streaming documentaries and fictional dramas that strive for verisimilitude (such as Succession and The Diplomat) are made by showrunners and screenwriters versed in narrative nonfiction. Shows from Morning Joe to Rachel Maddow present authors as experts alongside policymakers and elected officials, and Maddow is herself the author of four narrative nonfiction books. Opening the broadcast, she often relates an episode drawn from the history books—literally—and then pointedly joins it to the present.
Those figures generally present books that are recognizably “on topic.” That’s good and necessary. But through my own work as an author and teacher, I’ve been struck by the pertinence of nonfiction books that don’t deal directly with current affairs. These books develop narratives that at first glance are well outside the news cycle, but as you read them, you find they speak powerfully to the moment precisely because they don’t succumb to the presentism, partisanship, and winners-and-losers schemas too often regarded as inviolable norms of media today."

Your Value as a Writer in The Face of Generative AI
The whole world seems like it’s in the midst of huge cultural and technological shifts. I don’t think anyone really knows what’s coming next. As someone who works in the software industry and has a degree in computer science, I’ve been contemplating the impact of AI* on both my careers, pretty much daily.
On the surface, things look grim. Now you can use a prompt to generate a book in minutes. Who can find your books when Amazon is flooded with AI generated works that are being made faster than you can write? How are writers who actually put in the work, able to compete with all of this?

I feel like I'm going in circles trying to decipher what #Draft2Digital means by "Audio - Active" in my book's account. I understand that D2D is partnered with Voices by #INaudio— a note by the Audio tab says to "check" with the company. But I would need to create an account with INaudio? Then why would my book have an active audio status in my dashboard by D2D?
The book is self-published.
Any insight on what any of this means would be lovely.
