🌳📝 So apparently, writing non-fiction is like channeling your inner Bob Ross and painting a happy little tree. 🤔 Just start with the trunk and voilà! And if all else fails, blame your professor for making your class the academic equivalent of drawing a stick figure. 🎨💼

It's only shortly past 8 in the morning, but I need to #vent.
I just overheard a new #tenure track assistant #professor talk about how they got there.
In a nutshell, they haven't left the department since their master studies and stumbled into the tenure process by accident.I am (kinda) happy for them, but I am also so incredibly fucking jealous!
I have switched not only university but country after every degree/job, so by now I live in country number 5 since starting by studies.
The longest I've been in the same country was during my #PhD plus pandemic and unemployment for over a year.Especially older #academics don't seem to understand this, because whenever I mention any of this I encounter completely blank stares. Note, I'm in a department where most senior staff is local and celebrating 15-35+ years at the same employer.
I'm in my mid-30, I don't want to move every few years when my temporary contract ends.
I want to be able to plan more than 1-2 years at a time.I absolutely love doing #research, but I hate so many aspects of #academic culture or what has been normalized over the years for #AcademicLife.
I plan on staying in #academia despite of it.#Rant over, time to calm down and sip my tea.

According to WHO, 7% of the global adult population struggles with #alcohol dependency, and over 64 million suffer from drug addiction. Yet, these issues often remain hidden in universities due to the fear of judgment and reputational loss. #Nature recently published an eye-opening article about academics who have courageously shared their stories of #addiction and recovery: https://doi.org/10.1038/d41586-024-04218-z 👏 #AcademicPressure #ScienceWithoutStigma #AcademicLife

1/2: Global Faculty Development might sound like a slogan or exaggeration of international outreach, but I learned from having such a position at Kansai University in Osaka from 2016-2020 that Global FD can have a specific and practical definition in a suitable context. Basically, Global FD means meeting the needs of non-native English-using faculty members in non-Western countries. Specific guidance could involve preparing teachers for English-medium (or other international language) instruction (particularly to classes with international students), giving presentations at international conferences, publishing journal papers, and other scholarly
tasks. Research findings: "Meeting Global Faculty Development Needs in Japan" at https://www.researchgate.net/publication/330778631 or https://www.academia.edu/38264974
