Five lectures. A two-hour lab. An exercise released. A quiz built. Two online courses with no room and no timetable. One lab I supervise but never teach.
None of it is visible from a seat in the room. When preparation is invisible, that means it was done.

Well, tomorrow I have a meeting with my boss to talk about prolonging my contract.
Right after I give a talk about how terrible the situation for #postdoc.s is (precarious work environment, high prevalence of mental health issues).
I can't decide whether the timing is great or terrible.
I made the talk with #Quarto, and uploaded it to #Github, so you can check it out at https://tsievert.com/au-section-08-2026/#/title-slide
First time I created slides in Quarto and first time I publish them

Have any academics out there received official emails from your senior “management” about the appalling Arday affair? I’m curious about the tone struck in the message, whether there were any hints of wider empathy beyond formulaic platitudes, any intellectual engagement/analysis of the current situation, and whether there was any suggestion for how to protect members of the university and wider community from the recurrence of such a situation. #Arday #AcademicLife #university

Whenever I learn about a new statistical method:
Do I know what I'm doing?
- Highly debatableDo I hope for the best?
- 100%It's not helping that I need to run things on an #HPC, so my failing forward is hogging resources.
I sincerely hope #Reviewer2 is not reading my toots, but at least the results look plausible.

Ok, so writing *is* happening. Not the way I usually spend the last week of my summer vacation, but perhaps I'll finally get this damn article out of my head…

Over three hours of interviews for Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral network positions, one paper review, drafting a review article, and reviewing workshop proposals.
A busy day, but full of good academic things: interesting people, thoughtful work, and worthwhile projects.
I just wish there were slightly fewer worthwhile things at once.

- Know your audience and your message before working on your slides
- Clearly explain the main concepts, so that everyone in the room can follow
- Make the title of each slide the main message of that slide
- View questions as a unique opportunity to get feedback and deepen the discussion

AI may accelerate some research tasks by an order of magnitude, but science is more than productivity.
Mentoring students, developing expertise and passing on scientific culture remain central to the research enterprise.

Multitasking?
Of course I can multitask!
Look at me, waiting for my #rstats code to run and looking for new jobs, because my contract will end in 6 months and there hasn't been a clear commitment to prolong it, and drinking tea all at once!#AcademicChatter #AcademicLife #PhDLife #PostDocLife #AcademicMastodon

Should researchers still attend international conferences in times of climate catastrophe – how many, under which conditions? And what would “conferencing well” mean once the planetary dimension is taken seriously?

What makes a great PhD supervisor?
A Nature feature highlights small but lasting actions: giving confidence, protecting students’ time, encouraging independence and showing empathy.
Research culture is shaped one interaction at a time.
-
What predicts a successful scientific career? According to a massive bibliometric analysis, one of the strongest signals is simply publishing consistently early on. But the study also highlights the growing role of collaboration networks.

Science is often presented as something distant. Something that starts after a PhD, funding, or the "right" connections. But it doesn’t. I’ve put together a short presentation on how research actually begins – with a simple moment: "I don’t understand this."
