My favorite part of teaching-related conferences: The people who run parallel sessions are educators, interested in actually getting a message across, not just talking at you.
At this week´s #NVMO (Dutch Medical Education Organization) I learned so much from the round tables and workshops- from poetry in education to why (or why not) send students abroad, to what motivates educators.... all in the space of a day in a way that hit home. Love this.

Transformational learning turns your world upside down, but when we work toward transformational learning for students do we need a direction?After all, Optimus Prime is a transformer but that's not exactly what I have in mind with transformation in my Veterinary Medicine students...

On graduation, veterinarians (and the rest of us) are never "done" with work; there is *always* more work to do. Which is why it is so important to gain skills in carving out time for professional development, especially when you don't have time.

Talks by Isabella Spaans and Anne-Roos Verbree (both from UMC Utrecht) on role models for students in human MedEd gave me much to think about; we very much need diverse role models in veterinary MedEd, but this needs careful attention. Being the only lighthouse in the midst of other kinds of buildings can be a lonely place to be.

How do we help inspire future veterinarians with diverse role models, without asking too much of the role models?
At last week's meeting of the Netherlands Society for Medical Education (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medisch Onderwijs (NVMO) was themed "Equal opportunity in health care education", it was both inspiring and frustrating to think about Veterinary Med and diversity.

@jillymackay I am trying to get to #veted2023 for my first #VetEd conference, but I live in Vienna and my flight (via Amsterdam) has been cancelled! Now rebooked via Paris (very short transfer!) and hope to make it to #Edinburgh later today! It took that comment to make me realize that last year at this yearly crunch-time, we still had hybrid teaching. I miss it when trying to get everyone out the door early enough to get to my first lectures on time.... but when I'm actually in the classroom, I'm so glad to teach to humans rather than little Teams dots.

This week is teaching-heavy (actually, the next 6 weeks...). Partner is non-academic and was a bit confused that I'll be on campus every day this week. "But you're teaching? Oh, wait, you mean *live*?"
Indeed, all live- no more online classes. Live teaching is better for the students, better for me as a teacher. Much more complex for work-life. It's going to be a bumpy landing into summer break...
