  1. My favorite part of teaching-related conferences: The people who run parallel sessions are educators, interested in actually getting a message across, not just talking at you.

At this week´s #NVMO (Dutch Medical Education Organization) I learned so much from the round tables and workshops- from poetry in education to why (or why not) send students abroad, to what motivates educators.... all in the space of a day in a way that hit home. Love this.

  6. Transforming into... what?
Transformational learning turns your world upside down, but when we work toward transformational learning for students do we need a direction?

After all, Optimus Prime is a transformer but that's not exactly what I have in mind with transformation in my Veterinary Medicine students...

  11. “Life is long if you know how to use it.” -Seneca

On helping students make time for professional development, even when it is busy- and practicing what you preach. On graduation, veterinarians (and the rest of us) are never "done" with work; there is *always* more work to do. Which is why it is so important to gain skills in carving out time for professional development, especially when you don't have time.

  16. I'm always proud when our graduates take flight, but also worried knowing how harsh the veterinary profession can be.

What do professional socialization in VetEd and grant writing have in common? We can both use a challenge-focused professional identity.

Thoughts in my blog post including references to the most excellent papers by Armitage-Chan, by Wiebke Jansen at FVE, and by Emma Scholz .

  21. Professional socialization in veterinary education - or teaching veterinarians how to be veterinarians - starts before students arrive at university. But are we expecting too much from them if we expect them to already have experience when they arrive at 18 years old?

  26. We have a new preprint available, a pre-registered methods study looking at the relationship between practical exam performance and academic practice, self-efficacy and self-esteem in vet students. The results may shock you!

  31. How do we prepare veterinary students to talk about The Big Issues as professionals, like climate change, sustainability, animal welfare, and the role of veterinarians in these conversations? How do you prepare students to discuss with people who have very different opinions or background than their own?

  36. How can veterinary students learn to approach stakeholders, patient owners, lay public and other non-vets in ways that acknowledge expertise of all? How can this be approached so that doesn’t discount the science-based knowledge a vet brings to the table?

  41. Talks by Isabella Spaans and Anne-Roos Verbree (both from UMC Utrecht) on role models for students in human MedEd gave me much to think about; we very much need diverse role models in veterinary MedEd, but this needs careful attention. Being the only lighthouse in the midst of other kinds of buildings can be a lonely place to be.
