  13. Editorial in "Development" by Alex Eve and James Briscoe:

"We also have a collective responsibility to challenge how IF [ #ImpactFactor ] is used: in grant reviews, in hiring decisions, in promotion committees. If we believe that research should be judged on its own merit, we need to act on that belief, not just as editors, but as reviewers, as panel members, and as colleagues ."

  20. multilevel evaluation system centred on research quality”
“This provides crucial support for moving beyond the dominance of the #impactfactor – a measure of citations published within a given journal over a fixed period – paper counts, while enhancing China’s academic voice,” he said.

Rather than simply counting citations, the #DongbiIndex assesses their quality, constructing a citation network based on the assumption that high-quality papers cite work published in similarly strong journals.

  34. At #ISSI2025, Mike Thelwall suggested that the Leiden Manifesto should be updated to reflect the rise of large language models (LLMs) in research assessment.

He proposed four new principles — calling for transparent prompts, awareness of #LLM instability, cost-benefit considerations, and a reminder that LLM scores are not evidence of scientific contribution.

  40. I enjoyed and appreciated this editorial on the benefits of society journals vs for profit ones, for the academic community.

I was a bit perturbed though by the mention of journal impact factors. I thought academic communities were trying to move away from using this? Is it all just talk and actually this is an honest editorial that they are not?

  42. Following up on the #eLife / #Clarivate saga, DORA has posted a statement:
    sfdora.org/2024/11/25/clarivat

    extracts:

"This development reinforces how a commercial entity such as Clarivate, can, through its ownership of scholarly databases and indices, hold the academic community to ransom. Clarivate’s announcement is disappointing as it both punishes innovation in peer review and disregards the important role of authors in deciding how and where their research should be published."

"As funders and institutions increasingly move away from using single metrics to assess research(ers), the role of Journal Impact Factors is becoming increasingly irrelevant."

"We therefore support eLife and encourage it to continue its innovation and encourage other journals to consider doing the same."

    Go #eLife, Go AWAY #ImpactFactor!

  43. Our dialogue with Vasyl Cernat regarding Romania's evaluation reform continues in the pages of #Scientometrics. Dr. Cernat argues that MDPI’s practices - such as inflated impact factors, an abundance of special issues, low rejection rates, and rapid manuscript processing times - raise questions about the quality of 🇷🇴 publications:
