Whenever I learn about a new statistical method:
Do I know what I'm doing?
- Highly debatableDo I hope for the best?
- 100%It's not helping that I need to run things on an #HPC, so my failing forward is hogging resources.
I sincerely hope #Reviewer2 is not reading my toots, but at least the results look plausible.

I had three meetings schedules for the rest of the week, and two have just been moved! Happy days. However, the big grant writing deadline just got moved forward. Boo :( #OverlyHonestMethods

Once again I am scaring myself with how fast I can now crack out some plausible sounding proposal text #OverlyHonestMethods

From our actual paper on speech perception experiments run in the field on Scottish Gaelic: "For one participant, bagpipes were playing outside the building for Experiment 3 and part of Experiment 2. The participant did hear the bagpipes, but did not report any difficulty hearing the stimuli, and these two experiments do not involve reaction time measurement." Ussishkin et al. 2017. I've always wanted to post that one as #OverlyHonestMethods . I was really frustrated when those bagpipes started up outside the window. #AcademicChatter #Linguistics

"One gram of soil (from Hamilton, Canada) was mixed with 10 ml of PBS and serially diluted before being plated on a soil agar medium."

2025 March 20Spent this morning poking a radio telescope with a stick to diagnose a problem. The best part is, it actually helped.

Listening to the legendary planetary astronomer Heidi Hammel:
"We were guaranteed a hundred hours of observing time, as long as we didn't break the telescope. More on that later."
(They did not break the telescope.)

@dr_leigh
"A incubação durou três dias porque esse é o tempo pelo qual o estudante esqueceu o experimento na geladeira."

"We have pointed the telescope at the Sun to melt off the ice."

Today I belatedly realized that when considering a potential millimeter-wavelength observing project; I should actually think about the time of day and the weather.
Radio astronomer problems.

"If the reaction had released as much hydrogen gas as the spectrum suggested, the vessel would have exploded in my hand. It didn't, so there was less hydrogen."

"We were wondering about waste heat, so I experimented by trying to use the instrument to cook a hot dog."
(Not something I was involved with - although #TeamRadar has accidentally cooked insects and birds before.)

Reading Masiero et al. 2021 on baking sodium and potassium out of asteroids; by passing near the Sun or anything else that can heat them up: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/PSJ/ac0d02/pdf .
I get briefly confused by "K" for "Kelvin" and "K" for potassium.

@paulknightly throwback to when #overlyHonestMethods trended on Twitter several years ago

an attempt to preserve this (still true) wisdom from "birdsite" from 2013: https://twitter.com/ianholmes/status/288689712636493824 citing: "You can download our code from the URL supplied. Good luck downloading the only postdoc who can get it to run, though #overlyhonestmethods"

We include exp 4 although it's barely related. We've been sitting on the data, and it's not enough for a separate paper #OverlyHonestMethods

We ran 5 subjects because although we had strong significance after 4, a reviewer said it sounded too low #OverlyHonestMethods

The next derivation is trivial, but it took three months to figure out. #overlyhonestmethods
