  1. I'm looking for #comic suggestions about life as a #PostDoc for a department talk I'm preparing.
I have a pretty good collection from @phdcomics and a few from @errantscience, although with the latter I feel that I must have missed some.

If you can think of any other sources or specific comics, please link them below!

  13. I really appreciate the ritual of everyone in a lab group presenting their work to each other on a regular basis.

Presentation and communication skills are seriously undervalued in science, so enforced practice seems like a very good thing.

More importantly, though, I find it incredibly valuable to reflect on what I've been doing, why, what it means, what I can learn from that, and how it ought to shape my work going forward. There's something about declaring these things publicly that forces me to be concrete, and makes it much harder to deceive myself.

Then, of course, there's the precious feedback. So important! For me, that's the main reason to do science in academia. I don't think a human mind works very well without the perspective and criticism of others.

  17. Don't tell IT, but I just realized that my #rstats GAM/BAM only used a single core on the #HPC while I requested 128 🫣

Now I'm up to 4 cores at least, no idea why #mgcv isn't using more.

I didn't expect it to be this difficult to use more resources.

Catgirl: Mrrp. I need to brush up my methodology …
Male Cat: (reads, then yawns) … u up for that nonsense again?! You‘re neglecting me, brushing furs is high.
    Catgirl: Purr …
    🤷🏻‍♀️ … but I love theory.

Gabin Agbalé, PhD student in Alexander Marx ’s Causality group at RC Trust, attended the Reinforcement Learning Summer School 2026 in Milan. 🇮🇹🎓
The program connected directly to his work on causal representation learning and offered space for feedback, exchange, and future collaborations. 🌍🤝

  24. I went down the airtightness rabbit hole today to try to disentangle the different units used by researchers, industry and standards. So we can talk about them in a meaningful way. GAH! Blower doors need the 50Pa but buildings don't operate there. In all fairness. I LOVED IT! I am such a building geek 😍 #PhDLife

  26. Having a low work day today. Need to recover from the syncope last night. Will finish methodology today (1 page left 🤣🤣) Then maybe take it easy if my brain needs it. But more often than not, I get into a track and keep going. This will end soon and I will be editing my novel instead of my thesis 🥰 #PhDLife

  30. Omg my first article is finally out! 🎉

Making Space: a case for unruly food pedagogies

    tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

This paper explores the intersection of food pedagogies and disability by considering what happens when disabled bodies are centered and made space for in pedagogical approaches to food and cooking.

Using Carla Rice's concept of the "unruly body" and Manning's proposition for an affect-driven "radical pedagogy", we acknowledge the fragility of learning and its often meandering trajectory, paying particular attention to the embodied experiences of unruly bodies and their interactions with other bodies and objects in space.

  32. 🎓Congrats to Kenneth Chan on successfully defending his PhD!🎉
In his thesis, “Metre-Scale Radiative Effects at the Stratocumulus Cloud Top”, Kenneth investigated radiative effects that were previously overlooked on the meter scale in the cloud top region of stratocumulus clouds & their significance for the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer. He uncovered a warming layer above the stratocumulus cloud tops, the "W-layer," & we are very proud of his discovery! ☁️

  41. 🎓Mariana Salinas Matus successfully defended her PhD thesis, "The Role of Mesoscale Eddies in Southern Ocean Carbon Uptake Variability Across Space and Time." Congratulations!🎉
🌀Mariana's thesis improves the understanding of the global #CarbonCycle & identifies key mechanisms controlling the variability of #MesoscaleEddies. We're very proud of Mariana & wish her well as she starts a postdoc in @TatianaIlyina's new Department at the MPI for Marine Microbiology.🌊

    Of course I can multitask!
Look at me, waiting for my #rstats code to run and looking for new jobs, because my contract will end in 6 months and there hasn't been a clear commitment to prolong it, and drinking tea all at once!

  47. After almost 2 years of back and forth.. technical (website) issues, lack of proper editorial oversight 😬 and 3 rounds of peer review... My first paper has finally been accepted for publication! 🎉

    I can now breathe.
