When is a long prayer actually long?
Innsbruck FB 1118 first felt endless: Passion prayers, repeated scenes, and thirty-three Miserere. But its prayers unfold across Hours, Sundays, and multi-day cycles, and even “brief words” open into extended meditation.

A medieval prayerbook rabbit hole:
I started with a lovely prayer about angels, heavenly bread, sunlight, cedar trees, and worms.
I ended up mapping a flexible but surprisingly stable choreography of prayer after Communion.

What happens when you spend too long cataloging lines, rubrics, crosses, and prayer structures in a 16th-century prayerbook? Apparently I default to poetry. Send help.

A prayer said once is an event. Repeated across the day, it becomes a practice that holds.

I deciphered some heavily abbreviated scholastic Latin pasted into a book binding and found Johannes Nider’s Praeceptorium divinae legis hiding in the flyleaves of a Thalbach devotional book.
Fragments really do have a place in intellectual history.

Musicologists love antiphons. But a 16th-century prayerbook suggests the real center of gravity in the Divine Office was the psalms. The evidence? Counting drop caps.

History is sometimes an act of accumulation: 397 folios. Hundreds of candles. Countless tiny details.
Today’s blog post discusses reading for details that earlier editors thought didn’t matter.

@JourneysInFilm oooooooo looks cool! I hadn’t heard of Rebel Hearts but have put it on my watch list! #nuntastic!
My mom was friends with several nuns during those protest years; I suppose that’s one of the reasons I got interested in nuns’ experiences in general

@scholar_farmer And that reminds us that we've been meaning to ask you: Is Rebel Hearts on your radar?
Even though it's not medieval, it struck us as something you might enjoy, because it is definitely #nuntastic

Another blog post on that Thalbach Segen that I wrote about last week -- a "blessing" to be performed by the Sister during the mass. This gives the second half, and an assessment of how she works through spatial acts, equivalences, stacking of salvic things, and completeness articulated through binaries. She is creating whole-world protection for herself. Nifty!

“Bad is the companion who hinders the common task.”
Quoted from the 15th c Heiningen Philosophy Tapestry (and drawn from Aristotle) but applicable to so many different circumstances!
-
The Sisters of Kloster Goldstein who fled the old-age home to return to the convent are allowed to stay — if they give up social media and lawyer consultations
It’s almost like their Provost didn’t have their best interests at heart
(He didn’t)

I created a two-page assessment of a devotional miscellany ca. 1460-1480, and sent it off to the museum as my "thank you" gift for having gotten permission to access it.
Definitely female ("Suenderin"); definitely monastic (both liturgical and non-liturgical intercessions for the dead), and roughly datable for its prayer against the Turks.
It's been a busy 24 hours. I probably should have slept more of them, but at least I have a work-product to show for my time!

Today I learned…
We were talking about enclosed nuns and SATB repertoire. (Go watch the Vivaldi Gloria documentary about the SATB women of the Ospedale. Do it, I’ll wait!)
Anyway, on of our conference colleagues reported that her mother and her twin sister, both age 80, were now comfortably singing tenor and bass respectively.
So convent SATB was almost certainly possible in at least some places, even without instrumental support
Love that!

I wrote a thing! This is my first extended assessment of Vorarlberg prayerbooks, focused on prayers "before" the image of Mary

The Sisters at Kloster Goldenstein are definitely winning the publicity war! The three Augustinians are making the case that the church needs to give back by letting them inhabit their cloister as they'd been promised. And they've got a great Instagram presence to support their claims! I blogged about them today (and donated too)

I've been writing blog posts about some of the interesting prayers from the Thalbach prayerbook, a 16thc manuscript probably copied by a Tertiary sister in the Bregenz convent -- nearly 300 pages in a single hand. These prayers, I'd argue, give an important glimpse into 16th c Franciscan spirituality. Today's contribution: a prayer on Mary's sorrows as redemptive

blogged today, on a convent sister at Thalbach who becomes Maisterin. She kept a diary, much of which was incorporated into the Convent Chronicle -- and she gives us a lot of details about the world around her. Have a read if you like!

Does this count as #nuntastic or not? I suppose it all depends on your point of view. Could make for an excellent TV mini-series, at least.
