  1. What happens when you spend too long cataloging lines, rubrics, crosses, and prayer structures in a 16th-century prayerbook? Apparently I default to poetry. Send help.

  2. I deciphered some heavily abbreviated scholastic Latin pasted into a book binding and found Johannes Nider’s Praeceptorium divinae legis hiding in the flyleaves of a Thalbach devotional book.

Fragments really do have a place in intellectual history.

  3. Musicologists love antiphons. But a 16th-century prayerbook suggests the real center of gravity in the Divine Office was the psalms. The evidence? Counting drop caps.

  4. History is sometimes an act of accumulation: 397 folios. Hundreds of candles. Countless tiny details.

Today’s blog post discusses reading for details that earlier editors thought didn’t matter.

  14. Another blog post on that Thalbach Segen that I wrote about last week -- a "blessing" to be performed by the Sister during the mass. This gives the second half, and an assessment of how she works through spatial acts, equivalences, stacking of salvic things, and completeness articulated through binaries. She is creating whole-world protection for herself. Nifty!

  15. I transcribed and translated a Catholic Segen, a kind of activating prayer, from the 16thc Thalbach prayerbook. Here I provide Part I and an assessment of *how* the prayer works

  17. “Bad is the companion who hinders the common task.”

Quoted from the 15th c Heiningen Philosophy Tapestry (and drawn from Aristotle) but applicable to so many different circumstances!

  18. The Sisters of Kloster Goldstein who fled the old-age home to return to the convent are allowed to stay — if they give up social media and lawyer consultations

It’s almost like their Provost didn’t have their best interests at heart

    (He didn’t)

  19. Today I learned…

We were talking about enclosed nuns and SATB repertoire. (Go watch the Vivaldi Gloria documentary about the SATB women of the Ospedale. Do it, I’ll wait!)

Anyway, on of our conference colleagues reported that her mother and her twin sister, both age 80, were now comfortably singing tenor and bass respectively.

So convent SATB was almost certainly possible in at least some places, even without instrumental support

    Love that!

  20. I wrote a thing! This is my first extended assessment of Vorarlberg prayerbooks, focused on prayers "before" the image of Mary

  21. The Sisters at Kloster Goldenstein are definitely winning the publicity war! The three Augustinians are making the case that the church needs to give back by letting them inhabit their cloister as they'd been promised. And they've got a great Instagram presence to support their claims! I blogged about them today (and donated too)
