When you absolutely have to touch a part in your experiment because it does not perform well enough anymore, but you don't know whether you can fix it or whether you will completely destroy it -- and then it just works and even exceeds expectations 🤩 So relieved right now. The laser that seemed to be slowly dying in the last 1.5 years is not actually dying!

Multitasking?
Of course I can multitask!
Look at me, waiting for my #rstats code to run and looking for new jobs, because my contract will end in 6 months and there hasn't been a clear commitment to prolong it, and drinking tea all at once!#AcademicChatter #AcademicLife #PhDLife #PostDocLife #AcademicMastodon

For those (such as fleeing US researchers) looking to understand the French academic system, a handy diagram:
All credit goes to @anne who made it for me when I moved to France for a postdoc a few years ago!

Gah, not the best week... error in our code led to several week's work needing to be redone, plus received the results of the #RamonyCajal, the big 🇪🇸 national fellowship scheme. Reserve list again, but too far down to have any hope 🙁 Feedback: win more grants of course! Which exactly?! #PostdocLife

Everything (well, not actually, there is so much more) wrong about German university hiring in one picture:
- PhD position advertised with 65% pay of TV-L FU (i.e. 100% are probably 4.188,38 €/month)
- PostDoc advertised with 50% of the same bracket. Yes, lower than the PhD position
- Postdoc advertised with 100% of the same bracketTo be fair, the PhD position and the 100% #PostDoc are in the same institute, and the 65% PostDoc is in a different one, but all three are in the same faculty.
And technically 50% and 65% would mean that it's also fewer working hours....but let's be real, that does not actually apply here in reality.

On a more positive note, had a good meeting with my Masters student this morning as well as emails with my previous one about our ongoing project, both of which are progressing nicely 🙂 2 more meetings tomorrow, incl @[email protected], so there's plenty of cool work to do! #PostdocLife

another day, another rejection. That's two this week. At least this one, I am top of the reserve list (separated by a tie-breaker!) so there is still a chance... #PostdocLife #academia

Come to work
- try to login to #HPC
- down for maintenance
- try to login to second #HPC
- down due to power outage
- first HPC comes back online
- script that worked yesterday and has not been changed throws an errorI guess it's time to drink tea and browse memes then. The IT gods have decided that today is a bad day to get anything done.

I think my Fedi-supporters here will be delighted to read that following my online interview on Tuesday, I was invited to a final on-site round of interviews as one of three candidates!
Not sure which emoji is suitable to describe how I feel about that?!

I have a nice presentation and prepared notes for the discussion.. Any last advice for a first (assistant) professorship interview?

I recently met somebody actually working for #MDPI and before figuring that out, I was tricked by their partner into insult #MDPIgarbage.
Long story short, I consoled them that at least they weren't working for #Elsevier. But they seemed really nice and extremely unhappy to be stuck with a terrible employer due to economic circumstances.

Spent my day ranting on Mastodon and helping teach applied statistics with #rstats to first year students.
I consider that a day well spent.

It's only shortly past 8 in the morning, but I need to #vent.
I just overheard a new #tenure track assistant #professor talk about how they got there.
In a nutshell, they haven't left the department since their master studies and stumbled into the tenure process by accident.I am (kinda) happy for them, but I am also so incredibly fucking jealous!
I have switched not only university but country after every degree/job, so by now I live in country number 5 since starting by studies.
The longest I've been in the same country was during my #PhD plus pandemic and unemployment for over a year.Especially older #academics don't seem to understand this, because whenever I mention any of this I encounter completely blank stares. Note, I'm in a department where most senior staff is local and celebrating 15-35+ years at the same employer.
I'm in my mid-30, I don't want to move every few years when my temporary contract ends.
I want to be able to plan more than 1-2 years at a time.I absolutely love doing #research, but I hate so many aspects of #academic culture or what has been normalized over the years for #AcademicLife.
I plan on staying in #academia despite of it.#Rant over, time to calm down and sip my tea.

I feel a bit out of the loop with hashtags at the moment.
Could someone enlighten me what the current general purpose and biology/animal science specific academic hashtags are?Since guppee shut down, my feed feels quite empty.
And it took me far too long to even notice that 😅 -

You need to finish a proposal? How about we just accidentally switch off all power for the entire institute for half an hour, and watch how you try to save your lab?

People should keep their eye on the recent US federal executive orders on H1B visas. It's not clear exactly what is happening, who it will apply to, or whether it is even legal for them to do it, but there is a new executive order to start charging $100,000 annually for someone to be on an H1B visa. Presumably paid for by the employer. This is a developing story and will likely change as you read this, but... FYI.

I worked on two proposals today:
1. For a networking program, I described that I want to keep doing science, but I'd like to learn more about how to find the path for my career.
2. For a funding grant, I described exactly which path I want to take because of course I have concrete plans and know what I'm doing.

As fellow players of wooden wind instruments will know, we have to regularly oil our instruments to avoid cracks. The problem is that they need to be completely dry before you oil them and then they need to dry out for another few days, which means that you can’t play them for about a week in total. As a result, I don’t do it anywhere near as often as I should… But now I have found a solution to this problem: academic conference season! #PostDocLife #EarlyMusic

In the last few months, I have felt #overwhelmed, #overworked, #anxious, behind and planless. But, couple of days ago I stopped drinking big mugs of #blacktea daily. I think I am doing better. More sleepy during the day, sure. Bursty work efficiency, deep work and flow, but that's as usual. Quick googling suggests there isn't a link between #caffeine and #anxiety though, so may be #confirmationbias. #astrodon #postdoclife #publishandperish

Spent hours trying to figure out how to split one LateX document into two, including the literature list, line numbers and references between the two files, to satisfy the conditions of the journal.
The journal, in the submission process: "Now that you have uploaded all your files, select an order to merge all of them into a single file to send to referees".

I recently got my first paper review request (from a proper publisher, but a rather low relevance / very specialized journal). I saw that the paper was not great, but I accepted anyways to gain some experience.
The paper is really horrible, I am sure that LLMs were involved in writing it, and it's 25 pages long :'D Why did I agree to this again?

Still need to get used to the money-spending mentality in the new lab. I dared to propose that I can make the slightly less comfortable existing solution work instead of just buying a new device for only 10k€!

Hi folks,
so that came out in the wrong order. 😜
I wanted to introduce myself first before posting our preprint!
I am a female scientist currently working as a postdoc at Kiel university.
I am fascinated by ion channels, and my work focuses on potassium channels of the K2P channel family. I'm especially interested in pharmacology, regulation, and heteromerization, and mostly doing Patch Clamp!#introduction
