An unexplained oak woodland in Pembrokeshire.
It’s like the whole oak wooded hill is stemming from one underground rooting system.
This one is a bit of a #piecemeal. I painted a couple of wooden boards a couple of years ago but wasn’t all that happy with them at the time. I took some photos and then painted over the boards.
Some time later I came across the photo again and started fiddling with it on #Procreate. So this is #AcrylicPaint / #DigitalArt and I do very much identify with her #FacialExpression.
Top-heavy Brussels sprouts act like sails in autumn gales. Wind-rock tears fine root hairs, halting sprout development or snapping stems at ground level. Drive a stout wooden stake or bamboo cane deep beside the main stem on the windward side & tie with soft twine.
Well our dry season is over, rain is setting for good tomorrow. Time to cover these wooden sculptures in my garden. They're sealed with an oil based finish that has UV protection and anti-fungal ingredients but our climate in the #pnw is hard on wood. So I cover them with garbage bags for the winter. Needs to be done after a spate of dry days like we had this week, so it doesn't trap moisture under the plastic. #sculpture #Gardening #fall
I'm watching The Wicker Tree and I'm trying to decide if the Wicker Man remake is actually better than this dreary, wooden-acted, full-of-exposition-dialogue endeavour.
It's not all bad ... but it's far from good.
30 minutes in and so far there's been nothing interesting.

Charmy’s Army in “DEE SEAST – The Hell of the Ball” – Part 4: The Ethics of the Undead
<<< Previous COMIC strip NEXT COMIC STRIP >>>Our fourth comic strip delves into the bizarre social politics of our newly integrated society. The girls are standing alone, processing the fact that zombies are very much still part of the local ecosystem. The ponytail girl mentions she was planning on dressing up as a zombie for next week’s highly anticipated Halloween Ball—only to be swiftly reprimanded by the blonde! “How offensive! Zombies are people too!” To which her cynical friend delivers the ultimate grammatical reality check: “You mean WERE people too.” The existential weight of politically correct terminology for the reanimated dead leaves them with only one proper exclamation: “Holy macca noodle…”
The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the town square. Charmy and Dee had vanished down a side alley toward the municipal park, leaving the two girls leaning against the painted wooden railing of the municipal gazebo. The quiet of the town was almost surreal. Pigeons pecked at breadcrumbs near the park benches; children rode bicycles along the paved trails; a street sweeper hummed lazily along the curb. It looked like an idyllic postcard of small-town America, completely masking the fact that just five minutes ago, an actual walking corpse had been drooling near their espresso cups.
“I still can’t wrap my head around it,” the ponytail girl confessed, kicking a loose pebble into the grass. “I spent forty-five dollars at the pop-up spirit store last Saturday. I bought liquid latex, fake blood made from corn syrup and red dye number forty, prosthetic bone fragments, and a torn flannel shirt. I was going to do the whole nine yards for the annual Halloween Ball. The classic Romero stagger, the dragged left leg, the vacant stare, the works.”
The blonde turned on her instantly, eyes flashing with righteous indignation, her hands planted firmly on her hips. “Are you out of your mind? Have you completely lost your moral compass? You can’t wear that!”
The ponytail girl froze, her shoe suspended an inch above the grass. “Why not? It’s Halloween! It’s the one night of the year when everyone dresses up as ghouls, vampires, werewolves, and the undead! It’s tradition!”
“That was tradition before the invasion,” the blonde lectured, shaking her index finger with schoolmarm authority. “Context matters! Before the outbreak, zombies were fictional archetypes created by cinema and folklore. Now? Now they are our neighbors! They work in our commercial supply chains! They pay municipal parking meters! Dressing up as an undead shambler today is cultural insensitivity at its absolute worst! Zombies are people too!”
The ponytail girl stared at her companion, her jaw dropping open in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. She let out a laugh that sounded like a tea kettle hitting maximum boil. “Zombies are people too?! Have you suffered a traumatic brain injury while we were standing here? Did the airborne rot fumes finally seep into your prefrontal cortex?”
“I am simply advocating for basic social decorum,” the blonde insisted, lifting her chin with an air of profound superiority. “Dee is out here trying to assimilate into civil society, overcoming massive systemic prejudice and rampant biological decay, and you want to reduce her painful medical condition to a cheap costume for a Saturday night mixer? It’s callous!”
“Medical condition?!” the ponytail girl practically shrieked, throwing her head back toward the sky. “She isn’t dealing with chronic seasonal allergies or a mild case of eczema! She’s legally, biologically, and technically deceased! The heart has ceased to beat! The brainwaves are flatlining on every known medical monitor! You don’t say zombies are people too—you say zombies WERE people too! Past tense! Completed action! Finished chapter!”
The blonde opened her mouth to mount a blistering rebuttal, but the words withered on her tongue. She closed her mouth, looked down at her shoes, glanced sideways at the empty alleyway where Dee had shuffled away, and then looked back up. Her moral superiority melted away into a hollow, glazed stare as the cold, inescapable logic of the English language collided with modern etiquette.
“Holy macca noodle…” the blonde whispered under her breath, the sheer absurdity of the philosophical rabbit hole collapsing on top of her.
“Thank you,” the ponytail girl said smugly, crossing her arms over her chest. “Finally, a shred of cognitive sanity returns to the premises. There is no political correctness for a creature that literally had to be reminded not to eat the cashier’s pen. If someone’s skin is peeling off like dry wallpaper and their primary nutritional intake consists of outdated T-bone steaks from the deep discount bin, I am fully within my rights to use past-tense pronouns.”
“Okay, fine,” the blonde admitted, running both hands through her hair with a defeated groan. “Grammatically speaking, you have a point. But socially speaking, you’re still stepping on a massive landmine. If you show up to that dance dressed as a reanimated corpse, and Dee walks in as Charmy’s date, what do you think is going to happen? Do you think she’s going to appreciate the artistic nuance of your fake prosthetic ribcage?”
The ponytail girl paused. Her smirk faded, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization. Her eyes darted toward the community center at the end of the block, where a large vinyl banner advertised the upcoming Halloween Ball in bold, festive lettering.
“Wait…” the ponytail girl said, her voice dropping down an octave. “You don’t actually think Charmy would bring her to the dance, do you? To an indoor event with mood lighting, punch bowls, and a crowded dance floor? That’s an absolute recipe for a public safety incident.”
“Charmy is completely devoted to her,” the blonde warned, stepping closer. “He takes her to the diner. He walks her down the boulevard. If there is a major social gathering in this town, you can bet your entire savings account that he’s already bought two tickets. And if you think a minor detail like an absence of vital signs is going to keep him from showing her off under the strobe lights, you haven’t been paying attention.”
The two friends stood in the fading light, the absurdity of the afternoon giving way to a new and far more terrifying prospect: the imminent social collision awaiting them on the dance floor.

@siracusa Just listened to the show! Some clarifications:
@marcoarment is right - NEC 210.52(C) did make outlets on the side of kitchen islands illegal. He’s also right that putting a grommet in the middle of the island is a spill hazard.
In my case, the entire wooden part is just a top, so if anything did spill, it would just land on the floor and not leak into a cabinet. Also, the outlet in the island is actually IN the island, not on the side. Cords all run through a small notch in the back of the island to an internal outlet.
"Seen And Heard At France Protests Today, As Police Arrest 135 People
Protests by high school students over learning conditions sparked a movement that has since spread nationwide, fuelled by broader anger over the rising cost of living.
AFP has deployed reporters, photographers and video journalists in cities across France to document nationwide cost-of-living protests on Saturday.
Here is a round-up of what they are witnessing as security forces seek to prevent a repeat of violence and looting that erupted on the sidelines of similar demonstrations last weekend.
(. . .)
A 21-year-old student protester in Lyon, where demonstrators were tear-gassed on Saturday, said police were 'highly mobile'.
'As a result, I haven’t been able to find a march all morning. We keep moving around, but since the police have vehicles, they’re faster; they manage to break up the groups before they can even really form,' he said.
'Last week, the police weren’t nearly as mobile. We didn’t run into any issues; the atmosphere was very friendly and good-natured. Today, things are much more complicated … We end up exchanging information like criminals. We’re in small groups — sometimes just pairs — trying to share updates and find other people, but it’s extremely difficult.'
Near Paris’s Bastille square, a clothing store removed all its merchandise ahead of the demonstrations, while a nearby restaurant was boarded up despite signs insisting it was 'still open'. Many retailers in the capital had wooden boards covering windows.
A heavy police presence could be seen in Place de la Bastille, along with many journalists, but few protesters. Police used a megaphone to tell the crowd that the demonstration had been banned from the area, telling protesters to go to the alternate route near Porte d’Italie 'immediately'.
'I don’t think the French people have just one grievance,' said Aliyah, 22, sitting with her mother Ludovine on a cafe terrace near the Old Port in Marseille as they waited for demonstrations. She said people’s primary concern was rising costs.
'The people are growing poorer, the people are unhappy, so they take to the streets to protest,' she said, adding that bans on the demonstrations in some cities 'only makes us more determined to show up'."
Halloween Horror Movie Review: Carrie (1976)
Title: Carrie
Release Date: November 3, 1976
Director: Brian De Palma
Production Company: Red Bank Films
Main Cast:
Synopsis (via Letterboxd):
Withdrawn and sensitive teenager Carrie White faces bullying from classmates and abuse from her fanatically pious mother. When she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers, things take a dark and violent turn.
My Thoughts:
I had made it this far in life without ever reading Carrie or seeing any of its adaptations in movies, TV, or even the musical! And yet, Carrie is so steeped in the cultural milieu that the story is nonetheless familiar. There were some surprises. For example, I had no idea that the cast is stacked with familiar actors such as Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt, P. J. Soles, and John Travolta.
The less pleasant surprise is that the opening scene is set in a locker room where purportedly high school girls cavort around fully nude. It’s really creepy and gross and sets a bad tone for a movie that’s all over the place. Sometimes it’s a teen sex comedy, sometimes it’s an after school special, and sometimes it’s stealing the Psycho sting for unearned jump scares. At its heart, this is a movie about abuse – Carrie’s mother justifying physical and psychological torture with Christianity, the bullying by the popular girls, Billy hitting Chris, and even the “nice” teacher Miss Collins drilling and slapping students.
There are two things I liked about this movie. First, there’s Sissy Spacek’s performance, expertly capturing the shyness, ignorance, and off-putting nature of the lead character. I like how she researches her telekinetic power at the library, and gains confidence to assert herself against her mother. And no matter how evil her mother gets, she still craves her physical affection and approval.
The other good thing is the prom scene which is familiar to those who haven’t even watched the movie. The movement of the camera around Carrie and Tommy as they seem to be actually connecting is wonderful, as is the ominous lead to the bucket of blood. And of course Carrie’s revenge filmed in split screen as she walks through the flames is iconic. I guess I just wish the rest of the movie had been filmed so artfully and given support to the underlying themes instead of wooden dialogue, clumsy tonal changes, and vulgar titillation.

Start Your Backyard Flock Right —
Without the Costly Beginner Mistakes
The Autonomous Kitchen: Why Vegetarian Gardening Is Your Best Defense Against Rising Food Prices
Walk down the produce aisle of any local supermarket today, and you are met with a quiet, persistent shock. Price tags for organic greens, imported tomatoes, and even humble root vegetables have climbed to levels that make a weekly grocery run feel like an exercise in budgeting gymnastics. Inflation, supply chain vulnerabilities, and transportation overheads have turned fresh produce into a luxury commodity.
Yet, right outside our back doors—or on a sunny apartment balcony, a postage-stamp patio, or even a well-lit windowsill—lies an alternative.
Vegetarian gardening is no longer just a pleasant weekend hobby or an aesthetic lifestyle choice. For the modern household trying to wrestle back control over monthly expenses, growing your own food has become a practical act of economic self-defense. And contrary to popular belief, you do not need acres of pristine farmland, expensive motorized tillers, or a degree in horticulture to make a serious dent in your grocery bill.
If you have ever considered growing your own food, there is no better time to start than right now. Even as the seasons transition and the weather cools, a strategic approach to beginner gardening can yield fresh, nutrient-dense crops, slash your food overheads, and transform the way you interact with what you eat.
The Economics of Home Cultivation: Why Every Dollar Invested Counts
When people first think about starting a vegetable garden, they often make the mistake of comparing homegrown food to the cheapest, highly subsidized, mass-produced items at the discount grocery store. If you measure success solely against a head of iceberg lettuce priced at rock-bottom wholesale rates, a garden might seem like an expensive way to buy dirt.
However, the real financial power of a vegetable garden lies in targeting high-value, high-yield, and perishable crops—the exact items that cost the most at checkout.
By focusing your efforts intelligently, a small backyard setup or a collection of containers can easily trim a meaningful amount off your monthly food budget, paying for its initial setup costs many times over.
Timing Is Everything: Embracing the Cool-Season Shift
A common misconception among beginner gardeners is that growing season ends abruptly with the summer heat. In reality, nature operates on multiple gears. While heat-loving crops like standard tomatoes and peppers wind down as autumn deepens, a whole suite of cool-season champions actually prefer crisp air and mild temperatures.
NC State Extension Publications – NC State University
In fact, growing vegetables in cooler weather offers distinct advantages:
If you are starting your garden journey now, your primary focus should shift toward hardy greens, root vegetables, and brassicas that thrive when the thermometer dips.
The Essential Beginner’s Playbook: What to Grow for Maximum ROI
To maximize your financial return and keep frustration low, start small and focus on foolproof, high-value crops. Here are the best performers for beginners looking to save money at the dinner table:
1. Leafy Greens (Kale, Swiss Chard, and Leaf Lettuce)
2. Root Vegetables (Radishes, Carrots, and Beets)
3. Culinary Herbs (Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, and Thyme)
4. Alliums (Green Onions and Garlic)
Setting Up On a Shoestring Budget
The gardening industry is filled with high-priced gadgets, chemical fertilizers, and designer raised-bed kits that can easily trick a beginner into spending more money than they save. To keep your project truly economical, adopt a resourceful, bootstrap mindset:
Protecting Your Investment: Simple Season Extension
As autumn weather transitions into chillier winter conditions, you can easily protect your crops and stretch your harvest window for months using low-cost materials:
Cultivating Resilience
Starting a vegetable garden is about much more than trimming a few dollars off your grocery receipt. It is about decoupling your household from fragile supply chains, understanding the biological cycles of food production, and experiencing the profound satisfaction of sitting down to a meal that you nurtured from a tiny, unassuming seed with your own hands.
You do not need perfection, and you do not need perfectionist acreage. Pick two or three of your favorite vegetables, find a sunny patch of earth or a spare bucket, plant your first seeds, and take your first step toward food autonomy.
Footnotes & References
It sounds like a wonderful vision! Gardening in small spaces—whether on a balcony, patio, porch, or sunny windowsill—is extremely rewarding and completely achievable with the right approach.

Unlike windowsills or balconies with strict weight limits, a patio can comfortably support heavy soil, deep containers, and large fruit-bearing plants.
Here is a targeted setup guide to build a high-yielding patio harvest:
1. Top Crops & Container Pairings
Heavy-Yield Vegetables
Dwarf Patio Fruits
2. Container Types Best Suited for Patios
3. Patio Placement Strategy
To maximize growth, organize plants on the patio based on sunlight exposure:
[ BACK WALL / HIGH SUN ] -> Dwarf Lemon Tree, Bush Tomatoes (Tastiest with full sun, 6-8+ hours) [ MID-PATIO AREA ] -> Peppers, Bush Zucchini, Eggplant (Full sun) [ PARTIAL SHADE SHADOWS ] -> Leafy Greens, Radishes, Pot Herbs (3-5 hours sunlight) Here is the fundamental rule of container gardening: When growing in containers, you are creating a completely self-contained ecosystem. Plants in pots rely entirely on you for their water, nutrients, and root environment.
Focus on these five foundational principles to guarantee success on your patio:
1. Soil & Drainage Rule (The #1 Mistake)
2. Container Size Matters
3. Master the “Finger Test” for Watering
4. Feed Your Plants Regularly
5. Match Plants to Your Sunlight
Quick Patio Checklist to Start
[ ] Potting Mix (Not topsoil or garden soil) [ ] Pots with bottom drainage holes (5 to 15-gallon sizes) [ ] High-sun location on the patio (6+ hours for vegetables/fruits) [ ] Liquid organic fertilizer [ ] Watering can or hose attachment
