While doing what photographers do when fog was around this morning, I noticed a couple of birds that kept flying over head. And then I heard the calls! Kingfishers! 🤓 I tried grabbing some shots of them before they disappeared into the fog down river, but my bird photography skills need some work. 😂🤷🏼♂️

While I have not lived/biked in every U.S. city, it is still hands-down the best one for biking that I have lived in:

"While global tech stocks teeter, in China they have already crashed as lofty valuations collapse under worries about AI demand & curbs on Chinese exports."
https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-ai-bubble-has-already-burst-2026-10-26/
"The meltdown, tanking the mainland #STAR50 index of AI and semiconductor leaders by 40% in less than four months and vaporising some $480 billion in market value, is an ill omen for wobbly world markets and a dampener on #China's efforts at encouraging its savers into stocks to fund the #AI boom." -
While the original is obviously fantastic, Orgy's Blue Monday is also a great version. Possibly better. 🤘

While walking the dog I passed a neighbor's house with three very loud and energetic dogs. I almost never see any of these dogs, because they are in a fenced backyard, and I usually don't hear all three at once, but the full orchestra was out that morning, two barking loudly in different keys and tempos and one heartily going BAROO BAROO BAROO. It was like a modern jazz concert.
I stopped to record it and an older man came out of the house across the street from the Three Dog House. He was behind me. "I'm enjoying the music," I said, and then I thought about hearing that every day. "Probably you don't enjoy it."
Because I was interrupted, I did not record the concert.
The man looked at Minnie and exclaimed, "The cone of shame!" Yes, Minnie is still wearing the cone. It's been a month. We have an appointment at an eye specialist and are planning to switch vets.
A few minutes later I passed a parked car with a license plate frame that read something like, "CALIFORNIA — WHERE AMERICA'S DAY STARTS." At least I *think* that's what it said. But that does not make sense. As a longtime tech trade journalist, I am aware in my bones that the rest of America wakes up well before California does; when I hit my desk on a workday morning my Teams messages and emails are already full.
That sent me a down an Internet rabbit hole to find out where America's day REALLY starts — in other words, what's the furthest point east in either the continental US or territories. There are two possible answers, one of them a technicality.
The common-sense answer is a point in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I always forget the U.S. Virgin Islands exists.
The other answer, which will be great to know for a pub trivia quiz: A point on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, which goes so far west that it crosses the 180th Meridian and becomes east.
I did not research this point, but I expect that this means the point in the US that is furthest west and the point that is furthest east are a single footstep apart from each other.

While I love having a cell phone, I do miss one thing about landline phones. It was the number you’d give for general house things. The grocery delivery driver calling me about a schedule change while I’m in Barcelona isn’t helpful when my partner is waiting at home in the UK for the groceries. 🙄

While I am not without a few bones to pick with Quarantine Collective, I will give him credit for helping make it more clear that you actually need to read the works of writers and at least try to work on understanding the political and social contexts they come from, instead of depending on any YouTube personalities to educate you.
In his recent videos about Jacob Geller.

While setting up my floodlights and automations last night I revived some old tech I'd not used in years. In the process I put together Cat TV with an old POS Samsung smart (very dumb) TV. We weren't using it but the cats sure enjoy it. I'm only leaving it on for half an hour here and there but it's a hit.

While organizing stuff, I found a pre-packaged mystery pack, it's a size 'big', but I'll charge it as a 'regular' PLUS discount it 50% AND free US shipping. A very nuts deal for someone who likes surprises. 😱

While the cops were messing with them, one of the protestors managed to grab away a riot shield. A line of cops (mixed between state police, special forces, etc...I'm not good at spotting the uniform differences yet) in riot gear is backed by 3 water cannons and all their arms, marching forward trying to drive protestors away from the governmental offices on streets where there are places to hide and drive them to Skanderbeg Square, which is large, open (without hiding places), and made of polished stone that will become a tripping hazard if water cannons spray it.

While at the #Apple store I took the opportunity to check out the #iPhone 18 Pro’s, people are still buying it like crazy. But it’s such a non-exciting update I couldn’t find much reason to engage with it. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the iPhone and feel like Apple is gonna need to have something special because iPhones over the last 4 to 5 years feel like they are peak at this point. I’m still doing the same things I did on my iPhone X.

while we're on the topic of "god i hate this shit how is this the future": every time i try to borrow my dad's PC (he's a stubborn KUbuntu user) something else breaks. Today's "Wayland fucks everything up" moment: XWayland windows can't capture the mouse, which means VBox mouse usage is almost impossible.

While it crashed the browser after a few seconds the first time I fired it up, I've now got the #f1 Magny Cours 2000 race streaming on the service on Firefox/Linux after setting "general.useragent.override" to "general.useragent.override Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/156.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/156.0.4314.42".
Sure there are plugins for this but I try to keep this machine fairly clean.

While updating the ArchLinux AUR package for the Taiwanese Health Insurance IC card reader app (nhiicc), a very fun occurence:
Seems source package can't be downloaded from servers abroad, the host just cuts connection. (tried in CircleCI, and on a Dutch VPS)
Does they think that people don't need to use their software from abroad? 🤔 I wonder if this can be escalated somewhere in government IT.

While I agree with Laurence Freedman's argument that "kompromat" isn't that effective with Trump in this excellent essay, I'm not sure that Trump is simply motivated by admiration of Putin. I suspect it's more about lust for Russian money than a dictator love-in.

While I was away, a neighbor reported to my wife that Figaro has figured out how to climb the tree in their yard to get on the roof of our building. Fortunately, he also figured out how to make his way back down. We’re now wondering when he started this and how often.

A while back I was talking to someone about whether it was possible to set up your own GSM cell tower for 2G connectivity to try to revive old feature phones now that 2G is dead in many parts of the world. The idea would be to have something that would broadcast on the GSM wavelengths and communicate with the phone, then have it act as a proxy to allow for browsing the internet and sending SMS or making phone calls, which would be proxied to some kind of Internet service.
Of course, just broadcasting a tower on the GSM spectrum is highly illegal because of how it can cause surrounding phones that still listen in on old 2G networks to connect to that and mess up emergency services and whatever else.
However this would still be really interesting to do in a controlled environment where it won't leak signals into the background. Supposedly there are SDRs that can broadcast on GSM frequencies, and apparently you can target it such that you basically wire it up to the RF receiver on the phone, though I'm not sure where that is on my phone and I assume I'd need to disassemble it to get to it.

CW: BBC queer censorship
And while we're on BBC bias...
What!!
I'm taking that personally.
(as a bi person, who indeed owns a bi flag pin badge just like the censored one)
I bet if someone had a little pin of the Christian cross, they wouldn't have dared to edit _that_ out. "Oh but religion isn't political" - It's at least as political as queer love.
