Thoughts on bikes

Not much to say about the racing, which saw another sprint finish and another win for Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick Step (I get no pictures when I think of this brand). For a long time the race was led by a Lotto Intermarché rider on an Orbea, which I love to see.

This reminded me of something I read on one of the cycling news sites, concerning the lack of “high street” versions of the top teams’ bikes. For an aspirational 14-year-old getting a bike for Christmas, say, what is there? There should be an Orbea that looks like the Tour de France model, but with an alloy frame and lesser components. Orbea’s cheapest road bike appears to be around £2300 and their cheapest “all road” bike, which would be fine to have, starts at £1400. So it doesn’t appear to me that there’s a sub-£1000 option, and there should be. You need to be able to put a kid on a £500 bike, don’t you? Not spend £1500 and hope they don’t get bored of it.

Trek, incidentally, offer their Domane with an aluminium frame, starting at £950, but their Checkpoint gravel bike starts at £1200. My first Trek road bike was about £750, I think, so I suppose that compares to the £950. I’ve checked Halfords, too, and they have a Boardman adventure bike that starts at £850, plus a road bike in the clearance for £650. The £850 model is a Shimano Sora build. Meanwhile, the likes of Cannondale won’t get out of bed for less than £2500.

The best option I could find out there was Giant’s Contend, which starts at £750, with Shimano Claris. Claris is the absolute bottom of the range, 8-speed groupset, three levels below the ‘enthusiast choice’ of Shimano 105. It has rim brakes, too, which is a blast from the past.

Seriously, if bikes are going to be so expensive, it only encourages the “second hand” market, which (I’m sorry to all genuine sellers) equates in my mind to “probably stolen”. So by not offering a consumer-level “first bike” option, these high-end manufacturers are basically encouraging theft.

Listen, I get it. The one market you want to avoid, if you can help it, is the consumer market. Because you make hardly any profit to start with, and then you lose it all through customer support and complaints. When I worked for an Apple computer dealer, the last customers we wanted to deal with were members of the public.

But it’s a bit like guitars, isn’t it? You can buy a cheap guitar, but it might be hard to play or tune, or lack output, or have a shoddy fit and finish, and this is hardly going to encourage someone to persist in learning how to play. Shimano Claris is basically the high-action, hard-to-tune guitar of bike components. Pedals not supplied.

Anyway, Stage 8. Looked gorgeous, of course. Such a fabulous part of France. Which is why half the population is British.

• Using rotary motors means the upper PPE needs to be long sleeved
• the ears need earmuffs with NNR from -12dB to -24dB (or more)
• sparking environments need fire proof ppe
• eyes need ANSI Z87 glasses as protection (no exeptions!)
• faces need ANZI Z87 face shields

Cycling needs heavy PPE

• all types of cycling require PPE
• helmets designed for cyling (jet style motorcyle helmets are of course much better)
• UV protective PPE glasses, if needed with dioptre correction
• ears need to be unobstructed at ALL times!
• no earbuds
• definately NO HEADPHONES
• ear obstructions drop your hearing sensitivity with more than 48 dB, meaning you hear -48dB of surrounding ENV, which can be deadly. Every day people get into traffic mishaps due to this stupidity
• chest needs sweat wicking PPE, designed for cyling MTB, race, timetrial can use the gear interchangeably
• torso needs long sleeved cycling PPE
• legs need bibs which go all the way up to the chest as first layer of heat regulation
• at least three layers of torso PPE are required, using less means getting scrapes to serious wounds when a fall is broken properly.
• imporperly broken falls mean contusions ligaments and or bone damage, which are prevented with basic Judo lessons, up to the yellow band
• in Judo you learn not to fear the fall, even at high speeds
• I've had a Sensei who threw me more than 4 meters in the air, with me running towards him at full speed, to break falls as they would occur in high speed situations
• feet need cycling shoes
• pedals should be designed for cycling style and used with shoes matching.
• if pedal straps systems are used those need inspection for wear and tear
• SPD pedals & shoes work great for me on all cycling platforms I ride in

* the ears need earmuffs with NNR from -12dB to -24dB (or more)
* sparking environments need fire proof ppe
* eyes need ANSI Z87 glasses as protection (no exeptions!)
* faces need ANZI Z87 face shields

## Cycling needs heavy PPE
* all types of cycling require PPE
* helmets designed for cyling (jet style motorcyle helmets are of course much better)
* UV protective PPE glasses, if needed with dioptre correction
* _**ears need to be unobstructed at ALL times!**_
* no earbuds
* definately NO HEADPHONES
* ear obstructions drop your hearing sensitivity with more than 48 dB, meaning you hear -48dB of surrounding ENV, which can be deadly. Every day people get into traffic mishaps due to this stupidity
* chest needs sweat wicking PPE, designed for cyling MTB, race, timetrial can use the gear interchangeably
* torso needs long sleeved cycling PPE
* legs need bibs which go all the way up to the chest as first layer of heat regulation
* at least three layers of torso PPE are required, using less means getting scrapes to serious wounds when a fall is broken properly.
* imporperly broken falls mean contusions ligaments and or bone damage, which are prevented with basic Judo lessons, up to the yellow band
* in Judo you learn not to fear the fall, even at high speeds
* I've had a Sensei who threw me more than 4 meters in the air, with me running towards him at full speed, to break falls as they would occur in high speed situations
* feet need cycling shoes
* pedals should be designed for cycling style and used with shoes matching.
* if pedal straps systems are used those need inspection for wear and tear
* _SPD pedals & shoes_ work great for me on all cycling platforms I ride in
* cleats need to be maintained, cleatnuts need greasing and proper torque
* cleatnuts need to be regularly de torqued then retorqued to detect oxidation lockups, otherwise the breaking torque will be so high the nut will need forceful removal with a power drill and heavy mechanical skills

### inspect the race machine before riding and give tires proper ammounts of bar in air pressure
* grease the chain after wiping it of dirt from the last ride
* dirt has silica and other contaminants which work like grinding paste on chain lins
* take time before riding
