  9. In the late 1700s, rural France was beset with rapidly spreading rumours of aristocratic plots to suppress revolutionary ideas. But how, and why, these rumors were able to spread so quickly has puzzled historians. Now, using modern epidemiological modelling, a team suggests that a combination of high wheat prices, income and literacy level drove this period of French known as the Great Fear.

  11. CW: Racism, homophobia and food

We need a pejorative term for people who are ignorant about vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives. I saw a video of 3D printed "meat" with nearly a hundred negative reactions, most of them saying it was either gross or "not food". This is the typical reaction and it's exactly what the meat industry has trained people to do. But like, can we get over ourselves already? Most meat alternatives are made of soy or seitan with beet juice to make them look pink. It is 100% real food.

Tofu and vital wheat gluten have been used in Asian cooking for thousands of years. The hatred towards these foods is rooted in racism. "Tofu-eaters" is a term used by conservatives to illustrate the difference between Asian and "meat and potatoes" diets. Calling people who don't eat meat "effeminate" is homophobic and culturally insensitive.

I guess the term we can already use is "bigot" but I feel like it's not specific enough. Eat meat if that's your thing, but please stop spreading hate and misinformation about the people who choose alternatives.

Also, if meat alternatives are "so gross" to you, tell me, which part of the chicken is the nugget?

  14. Ottawa's Agricultural Oasis

In the middle of Ottawa lies the Central Experimental Farm, a National Historic Site. Established in 1886, it's a functioning government-owned agricultural research centre. It was pivotal to Canadian history for developing Marquis wheat, a hardy strain that made farming the Prairies viable. The farm remains an active research hub and a massive green space in the city.

H/T @Srishti Vishwakarma | extreme weather stress| crop | agriculture | machine learning, network science, and statistics
    “[The authors:]
    • Developed a multi-stressor framework with 32 agriculture-relevant weather indices and integrated them into two composite metrics: Weather Stress Divergence and Weather Stress Similarity, capturing deviations from and spatial correspondence with historical weather stress patterns.
    • Using an agroecological-zone-specific weighted averaging framework, the framework minimized index redundancy while accounting for the regional importance of individual stressors.
    • Adapted the concept of climate velocity to an agricultural context to assess how current weather stress patterns differ from historical conditions and how their spatial correspondence is changing over time.
    KEY FINDINGS:
🌾 More than 50% of CONUS cropland experienced increasing weather stress divergence.
🌡️ Drought and extreme heat were the primary contributors to high divergence.
📉 Current weather regimes are becoming increasingly dissimilar to historical patterns…”
