More On AI Advancing Math And Mathematicians As Colic Babies
True lovers of science and mathematics are grateful to AI. Science is knowledge, not something restricted to an elite: the ancient Greeks had secret cults, sometimes mixed with math, what they called mysteries. It did not end up well for Greece.
There is more math to do than ever. There is more thinking to do than ever. We are rising from mechanical thinking to transcendental thinking thanks to AI
Elites are the bane of civilization. Children of the elites are always years ahead of all their peers. By age nine Mr Tao was attending a university. By age ten he had met with at least three of the world’s greatest mathematicians. His parents travelled him around the world to meet the elite. This speaks first of greed. Now, true, if one gets all the higher teachings denied to the masses, one will be a genius. No pre-teen child can satisfy the requirements to attend a university except if somehow they got special derogations from privilege, not merit (Mr. Tao is not the only case; each time remarkably greedy parents provided the propellant.).
Some will say Tao’s merit was tremendous. Well, elites are always tremendously meritorious, or so we are told. Marcus Aurelius elevated his son to the rank of Caesar, at age 5, in 166 CE. Tremendous merit, no doubt..
Mr. Tao got his Fields Medal from King Juan Carlos on 22 August 2006. In 2008, King Carlos got around 200 million dollars in corruption from Saudi Arabia alone (the number of 100 million is often quoted; but people in the know have advanced 188 million). Some will say it has nothing to do with math. But apparently it does: Tao shook the King’s hands, augmenting the latter’s glory. An AI, consulted on the subject, opined that it was just a function of state. Not so: Mr. Tao gave the young top mathematician accolade to the old plutocratic crook, and thus got into the world elite. The elite is a network. Juan Carlos was never indicted. But a homeless guy stealing a sandwich would be. And Tao, whether he understands it or not, approves of that, is defined by that entire elitist hierarchy of privileges and to see it disappear in a puff of AI, goes from being to nothingness.
And therein the drama: suddenly machines do better than Tao and his ilk. It is the very notion that Tao and his colleagues deserve to belong to the elite because they are masters of the non-understandable, which is threatened. Surely, if a machine does it, it’s not witchcraft anymore.
Apparently, the sort of mathematics that Professor Tao and his friends and disciples are now beaten by machines. Imagine you train all your life to open doors, and you are the world’s best doorman and all young and coming doormans look up to you. You are paid 700,000 dollars, about ten times the average family income, to open doors. And, now a machine opens doors better than you. You are horrified. What happened to the human touch, to the careers of doormans in training? A profession has been devastated. Just as so many professions were devastated when we went from horse pulled vehicles to automobiles. ..
Tao according to the New York Times::
Terence Tao is typically described as one of the world’s greatest living mathematicians, but right now he is doing very little math.
“I’m on a war footing,” he said while grabbing coffee during a two-day math workshop at the University of California, Los Angeles, that was rife with talk about the existential crisis that artificial intelligence has created in his field.
Days earlier OpenAI had announced that it had solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of seven “Millennium Prize problems” that had stymied the greatest minds in math for nearly a century.
“There are no rules any more,” Dr. Tao, 51, said in an interview before the workshop in his modest office on the U.C.L.A. campus, his home since 1996, when he arrived after completing his doctorate at Princeton at the age of 20. “I’m just numb to what would have been jaw-dropping events for me a year ago. At some point, maybe I’ll get hit by a whole wave of PTSD.”
“I am horrified by the many person-years” of research, particularly by young mathematicians, “being casually disrupted or destroyed,”

This is all infantile.
Mr. Tao’s father, a paediatrician, persuaded school authorities to let him skip five primary-school grades. It shows. Now Mr. Tao has apparently to revisit what he missed. There are no short cuts or royal road to get a fully balanced brain. The case of Mr. Tao is actually very frequent in mathematicians, who often turned to be slightly autistic or autistically trained, to better reserve brain resources to do exactly what AI does now much better.
A whole sub-tribe of the world’s greatest mathematicians are revealed to be little babies crying because the candy has been taken away from them.
Time to grow up.
Elite no more. Science first. AI will help.
AI lowers the cost of access: a motivated person can now ask for explanations, generate examples, check computations, translate between fields, and experiment with formal proof assistants without first gaining admission to an elite department to engage with worthy interlocutors. In that very important sense, AI can make knowledge less gatekept.
And so it is all over science. I have realized, for example, that one can exhibit alarming characteristics of the man-made greenhouse effect’s acceleration, by considering a space of exponentials… Yes, a gradient of in a space of exponentials: the huge resources needed in gathering data and computing were readily available to me… from AI… .
