  1. My daughter is shy in the same way that I am: we're pretty good when we're actually in a conversation, but we find it immovably impossible to actually start a conversation with someone new.

I'm OK with it now for me, but I find it really painful taking her somewhere new and watching other kids pair off while she stands miserably in a corner.

  2. Just finished reading Flesh by David Szalay. It won all the awards in the world, so me saying that I really liked it doesn't really add anything to the conversation. But when have I ever let that stop me?

  3. Me and a female colleague were messaging over Teams.

ME: Not a problem. Let's find a room and moan together.

Then I reread what I'd typed and deleted it.

Don't wanna end up in front of HR.

  4. Everyone associates the phrase "one more thing..." with Steve Jobs introducing an amazing product that's about to change the world. It's cool. It's edgy.

But let's be honest: the person most like to say those words is the office bore. It's that guy - and it's always a man - who ignores the fact that the meeting is overrunning by an hour and that everyone wants to get some lunch, and starts droning on about some boring, fucking shit.
