  16. Crow to the Rescue (Part 2)

    FanFic #TheWindInTheWillows Starring #Airisu
    #Wss366 stifle

“Miss Airisu, I would like to introduce you to my client, Mr. Toad of Toad Hall,” the Badger said, addressing the crow perched atop a bookcase filled with pristine leather-bound books.

He gestured toward Toad, who sat comfortably in a well-worn armchair. All the while the Badger shuffled from one side of Toad’s study to the other, his hands behind his back.

The bird cocked her head, continuing to pay attention to the Badger. “I believe I have explained the case to you: violations of the Cinematograph Act. Namely, the fire that resulted from his film showing at the Mayor’s House.”

“Awk, crikity, crack. No need, no need,” Airisu cut off the Badger. She spread a wing, preening, and continued, “You’ve briefed me on the particulars. My memory is as excellent as my legal skills.”

The Badger looked askance at her. The Crow was not his favorite animal. Still, she was certainly better than the weasels or stoats, and she made up for her lack of manners with her intelligence and knowledge.

Meanwhile, Toad glanced between them, trying to appear wise. He was impressed by the Crow’s business card, which not only presented her name, Airisu, in baroque gold letters and listed no fewer than three academic degrees. Not that Toad could determine what they had to do with being a barrister.

“Well then, I’ll be off,” Badger said. He threw a piercing glance at the Crow and said, “You take good care of my friend, or I shall know why.” With that, he turned and shuffled from the room.

“A fine fellow, I suppose,” Airisu said. “Stuffy, but solid. Some taxidermist would love to stuff him, I’m sure. Awk, awk, awk.”

Toad joined the chuckle uncertainly. He agreed with the general sentiment, but Badger was his friend, and he didn’t enjoy hearing someone badmouth him. Besides, he, Toad, could have made a much funnier joke.

“Now, tell me in your own croaks about what happened. And don’t croak on the words! Awk, awk, awk.”

Toad blinked, wondering, “How did I get saddled with this jokester?”

“I say, Miss Airisu, you shouldn’t make fun of me and my friends. I am ‘Toad, Artiste Extraordinaire, Prince of the Screen.’”

“Yes, yes, I’m sure. Now, Toad, tell me what defense you may have for your crime.”

“There was a little accident; the film—The Magnificent Adventures of Toad: His Wrongful Imprisonment and Daring Escape—somehow burst into flames. It could happen to anyone. But the mayor, a most unforgiving fellow, has it in for artists. It was a stupendous drama all about...”

“#Stifle it! Such pomposity will get you sentenced twice before you can say jackrabbit. You are to do what I tell you. In court, keep your trap shut—it’s open—and no matter what I do, just go along with it.”

    “I.. I.. You can’t…” Toad sputtered.

“Mr. Toad, close your mouth unless you want me to feed you a worm. Awk, awk, awk.”

  21. A plaque has been unveiled at Central Metro station in #Newcastle in memory of Professor Tony Ridley, who helped bring the Tyne and Wear #Metro to life.

Ridley, who died in March aged 92, led the Tyne and Wear Passenger #Transport Executive, now Nexus, from 1968 to 1975. He oversaw the Metro’s planning, secured funding and supervised the first year of construction, which began in 1974.

The ceremony on Friday, 16 October, was attended by members of his family.

Nexus managing director Cathy Massarella said Ridley had turned the Metro from an idea into reality, transforming public transport across the North East.

After leaving the PTE in 1975, Ridley became the first managing director of Hong Kong’s Metro system before going on to manage #London Underground. He later served as president of the Institution of Civil Engineers and became an emeritus professor at Imperial College London.
