I mean, Windows is just such a weird proprietary distro.
It doesn't use the latest Linux kernel, or even a mainstream POSIX-compliant alternative like BSD. Instead, you have a strange CP/M-like monolithic kernel — I think they used to call it DOS — that's been extended to behave more like VAX and MP/M.
It also doesn't use either X11 or Wayland as a display manager. Instead, you have an incredibly unintuitive overblown WINE-like subsystem handling the display.
Because it doesn't natively use Wayland or X11, you are limited in the desktop environments that you can use. There's really limited support for KDE, despite the best efforts of volunteers.
Instead, there's a buggy and error-prone proprietary window manager that ships with it by default. A bit like how Canonical tried to make Unity the default desktop for Ubuntu.
And confusingly, they've named that window manager Windows as well!
That window manager lacks many of the features an everyday Gnome or KDE user would expect out of the box.
It also doesn't ship with a standard package manager, and most of the packages ship as x86 binaries, so installing software works differently to how an everyday Linux user would expect.
There's also only one company maintaining all of these projects. It insists on closed source, and it has a long history of abandoning its projects.
And sure, if you're a nerd who's into alternative operating systems, toying with Windows can be fun.
But if your grandpa is used to Linux, frankly he'll be utterly bamboozled by the Windows experience.
I'm sorry to be glib, because Windows does have some nice ideas.
But.
Windows on the desktop just isn't ready for your average, everyday Linux user.

Methinks that no single of the mentioned -isms is to blame, they all go hand in hand, and IMO we need to add #carnism to the list also – there must have been a time when most of us could have quit exploiting and murdering the other animals. Or is that time now? At least for most of us?
(Not talking about indigenous people who might not have – subjectively or objectively – other ways to feed themselved and their kin.)

Very helpful. I’m still puzzled that this design feature seems to result in far fewer uses of the ⭐️ compared to the boost. Being #AlgorithmFree here has me using the star way MORE for posts I agree with, find funny or insightful—precisely because it doesn’t feel performative. Got the Raspberry Pi 4 streaming using the hardware encoder at last. Fixed by dist-upgrading to Bookworm. CPU encoding pegs out a core at 100%, now down to 3% with all the hard work being done in hardware. #ffmpeg #raspberry_pi_4 #h264_v4l2m2

This is nuts. I can buy 5 double sided PTH PCBs with solder mask and silk screen, for £1.60. With postage and custom fees, it comes to a total of £3.18. Economies of scale and automation gone mad. It almost makes me feel guilty to get them this cheap.

This is Steve. She is a herring gull who we have given little bits of food now and then whenever she turns up at our window. We didn't see her for about 6 months but she came back today and had some raisins. She flew off and came back with a present for us! Some lovely twigs and a bit of brush. I've heard of crows bringing gifts, but not gulls. Thanks, Steve. You are the best.

How is everyone's new year going so far? I've been trying to fix them 3d printer, after it keeps getting clogged. Had to set up a miniature forge on the coffee table to heat the parts up and melt the plastic to take it apart. I've got some ethyl acetate on order to give it a good clean.
