In search of an #OperatingSystem and #WindowManager or #DesktopEnvironment that uses less #hardware resources than #AlpineLinux and #LXQt. There's only one option I'm aware of that's not #performance #benchmarked on https://EveryByteCounts.org. Curious if anyone might be aware of any options.

The route servers at @dd_ix are using the BIRD routing daemon on @alpinelinux.
Therefore I've packaged birdwatcher (a JSON API for BIRD) and it is now available in the community repository of Alpine Linux Edge.
This allows you to easily add your BIRD instances to your friendly looking glass Alice-LG. It is shipped with two initd scripts for ipv4 and ipv6 and the default config is already tuned for bird2.

(Me proposez pas #raspbian). Je reste attaché à debian, apt et apt-get...

@chuso Probably worth mentioning the related bug on #Gentoo Bugzilla.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=CVE-2026-31431
Looks like @thesamesam is well and truly onto it.
Also for #Debian users, at the moment they're working on fixes: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2026-31431
Edit: Nothing seen on the #AlpineLinux front, I guess we'll hear from @alpinelinux in due course.

Being #blind, and in any case working mostly from an #ALpineLinux terminal screen, I mostly use #vim . I might have chosen neovim but I kept hitting the strange small incompatibilities. One of them is if neovim detects a 256 color term, it uses it by default,. The problem is there is no option to disable and force #ansi color use.
I had spent years tuning an ansi color them that actually works for my eyes so I can vaguely see differences and have some idea what I am typing. The Alpine vim packages are a bit borked, though, because they don't support a proper #sql syntax module, but some shim for oracle that is incomplete. So I cannot use it to highlight sql in C++ strings like I can with Debian.
Tooling for blind use can at times be as frustrating as being blind.

Gave up on Apple Containers for the time being. Just too unpredictable and unmanageable networking.
Was mainly using it to run a local Pihole container to filter out ads. Was recommended to use Podman as a drop-in replacement because I can't use Docker Desktop. But Podman uses a VM to host the containers and that VM does already bind on Port 53 for its container DNS resolution. So ended up using a small VM with UTM virtualisation app that runs the Pihole container in an Alpine Linux ....
These are the hoops I jump through to avoid ads ....

interesting: #qnx have adopted apk as their system package manager: https://www.qnx.com/developers/docs/qnxeverywhere/com.qnx.doc.qdd/topic/using_apk.html
and they use #abuild now too: https://github.com/qnx-ports/qsc-apk/tree/main
and they even comply with the GPL license, but their patch is not mergable in the current state: https://github.com/qnx-ports/aports/blob/803/core/apk-tools/0001-qnx-compat.patch

Current status: trying #bun (#javascript runtime) because it has HTMLRewriter 😂
https://bun.sh/docs/api/html-rewriterUnfortunately they don't have *musl* build so it's quite a hassle to get it work on #alpinelinux and #distroless 🙁

Curious if others are experiencing #instability with #AMD processors or #GPU on #Linux or if this is #AlpineLinux specific. Opened an additional ticket that is focused on the AMD specific issue, since the last one appears it may have been generalized to the linux kernel overall. I do not see the same behavior on an #Intel #N100. https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports/-/issues/16920 #bsod

#dwm and #emptty now benchmarked on https://everybytecounts.org There are so many options for a #WindowManagers with #DisplayManager on #AlpineLinux with better performance than on bare #NixOS #Linux without a #WindowManager, at a fraction of the disk usage. Also, the next release of Alpine, in November, will have more #DesktopEnvironment / window manager options. Some of which are currently on the edge branch, or had become out of date and will have new versions.
